Ghost Rider Sequel in Development

Bloody Disgusting has confirmed that Columbia Pictures is officially out to screenwriters for Ghost Rider 2, and star Nicolas Cage is already signed on to reprise the role as Johnny Blaze.

This is shocking because nobody I know enjoyed the 2007 film when it was released. In fact, the Internet Movie Database user rating is a 5.3 (which is somewhere between bad and very bad) and a 28% on the Rotten Tomatoes critics-rated Tomatometer. The film didn’t even make big bucks at the box office. Made for $110 million, the film grossed $228 million worldwide (again, about half of which went to exhibitor costs) which means the film barely made a theatrical profit. But for a superhero movie like Ghost Rider, the real money is made in merchandising and DVD sales, which explains the interest in a sequel.

I use to read Ghost Rider comic books when I was younger, and I really believe that the comic property could be turned into a pretty cool movie. Lets just hope that Mark Steven Johnson isn’t sitting in the director’s chair this time around. Sony needs to learn from Marvel’s recent wins and hire a director who is a few levels higher than the material.

I certainly hope they do come out with another one. I really loved the first one and am waiting ever so patiently for another one. I look forward to see Nidholas Cage once again in the role of the Ghost Rider!

Big deal! So the movie stunk. What do you expect from a comic book character, reality?
  • Pezter
One of the worst movies of 2007. Only the second film i've ever walked out on.
  • Huh? They're making a sequel? Didn't they see the first one!?!
  • Solid
I'm excited for the sequel. I think outside of nitpicky fanboys the movie was well received by kids and those who can enjoy a movie for what it is rather than what they wish it was. It's kind of like the first blade to me. I loved that movie even though I'd only heard of blade from the spiderman tv series from the 90s. It actually got me interested in reading blade comics. Then the sequel really pushed things further quality-wise. Why can't people just have an open mind sometimes?
  • Exactly, I'm with Solid...for what it is, it's hilarious and fun.

I mean damn, the imagery is more suited to a tattoo than a serious movie... come on.
  • Holy Crap...my friends and I loved the first Ghost Rider movie. It was so shameless stupid and goofy that is was instantly a crap movie classic and I think they knew it going into it, and I can appreciate that.

I find it hard to believe that anyone looked through a comic book that looked like the cover to an Iron Maiden album and thought the next great masterpiece was going to be made from it. So they had fun with it.

If you give up any thoughts of X-Men 2, or Spiderman 1 or 2, you can enjoy the hell out of this wacky movie. Ok... A FLAMING SKULL WHISTLES FOR A MOTORCYCLE TO COME RUNNING LIKE A DOG! That right there is worth it...there are several things that are awesome about that.

Hold on...is this a jab at the movie or Iron Maiden? Because Iron Maiden is, by both pure hard facts and the opinions of literally millions across the world, one of the best selling and greatest metal bands of all time.
That being said, Ghost Rider, as a character, is highly iconic in comics and in pop culture. Scorpion, from Mortal Kombat, is highly based off Ghost Rider. He's also been the basis of songs, other comic book characters and characters in video games.
Was this movie the best? Not by far. But, I don't feel that it deserves the kind of abuse that it's receiving from critics and so-called fans.
The movie was an origin story. It had to set everything up. The next movie, hopefully, will blow everyone's expectations away.
Perhaps they could use the Marvel MAX label Ghost Rider 6-part series "The Road to Damnation" as the basis of the story because it didn't get much grittier or dark than that series.
  • Doesn't really make sense financially, with the current economic climate as it is and as Peter mentioned in his article that it the first 'Ghost Rider' barely even made a profit, I can't see why this project would get green lit. (You could also maybe add that Cage is losing his marketability as the years go on).

The reason why they are talking sequel is because it made *some* money at the b.o. but made *lots* of money on dvd. Not sure why Cage would come back and why it would be released theatrically. It would make sense to make straight to dvd, where it will make $ and nobody cares about, you know, quality...
  • That is a really good idea.

Can Nic Cage and do a direct to dvd film that is super dark with crazy action. They wouldn't have to worry about making the movie more accessible to a general audience. They can make the Ghost Rider film for Ghost Rider fans. Or at least try to.

I wouldn't expect a Direct to DVD ghost rider to be great, but I would expect it to be better than the theatrical release. And it would make more money if they did it that way.
  • I think Ghost Rider could be good. I don't think Nicolas Cage should be involved though. I don't know what's happened to him, but he's really awful in everything now.
  • My god I hated the first Ghost Rider so much....and its not even so bad it's good....its just baaad.

I think Ghost Rider is awesome, and the movie killed it for me. No way am I going to see the sequel.

Unless Christopher Nolan ends up doing it. I'll any movie he does on day 1 :D
  • My god I hated the first Ghost Rider so much....every time you see a bad guy there's a stupid ass guitar riff.....just rediculous. And its not even so bad it's good....its just baaad.

  • uh, ghost rider was horrible. i think this character can be very dark and we can have awesome results on the screen. i have my finger crosses. lets hope they hire a good director for this sequel

Can someone explain Nicolas Cage's career please? How can someone go from staring in Coen Bros. and David Lynch movies, from winning an Oscar for Leaving Las Vegas to become no surer indicator that whatever movie he is in blows? Every performance I see him in now he seems to be playing a character and parodying his own performance of that character simultaneously. It's weirdly meta and I do not know whether to be impressed or horrified (probably both).
  • I enjoyed the movie when it came out. I didn't love it, but I liked it. I thought Nic Cage didn't deliver a great performance, and that coupled with it being an origin story really drug this movie down.

I read the comics, and I would love to see another Rider film. I think the second could be far better than the first because they could jump right into the action. IF they are going to do it, they need to come up with a great story, and they need to have lots of action. I want to see the Rider in an epic battle! As far as the stories go, I think the ghosts of highway 13 would make a great smaller villain, maybe open the story with Blaze riding down an empty highway in the middle of nowhere, and encountering them and kicking their a**es! As far as the films main villain, I'd love to see Zarathos and/or Centurious. I think it would make for a cool story, and they could do a whole mephisto pulling the strings behind the scenes to set up for a cool third entry in the franchise. That would be awesome!

I guess someone loves the film mr. Peter Sciretta. There is this member in DVDtalk who was a diehard fan to the film and collected all released dvd of it. Here is the url link of his Ghostrider addiction: http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b221/xage00/GRI...

They rebooted the Hulk, why not reboot Ghost Rider? I never read the comic books, but the concept seems to be a good one, I don't see why they should have to follow the crap that was the film.
  • I enjoyed Hulk 2, i thought it was done much better.
  • please no nicholas cage please no nicholas cage please no nicholas cage.

While you're at it, please no ghostrider sequel. seriously. how bad was that film.

    pretty bad.
  • pangloss
if nic cage is coming back then the writer and director probably won't be saving it.
  • I pirated the movie and I couldn't finish watching it. Just plain horrible. This only happened to another movie... Miami Vice.
  • Hollywood... one big fat joke!
  • The first film was really bad. Shockingly bad. I suppose with a sequel, it can't possibly be worse. Can't it? Please Sony, prove me right. Also Eva Mendes' character should get killed off and replaced wth someone more...attractive and who can act.
  • Eva Mendes should get naked in this one....then I'll watch it.
  • I hate Ghost Rider
Ghost Rider was the second worst movie I've ever seen. And if we get a Ghost Rider two before another Superman movie, the universe will implode into a superdense black hole.
  • Rob Merritt
People who say Ghost Rider should be dark never read the vast majority of Ghost Rider comics. I know current ghost rider books are dark and griddy but everything is. (One of the reasons I stopped buying Marvel comics) The Ghost Rider books from the 70s and 80s and even the 90's relaunch weren't very dark at all.
  • Anti-Septic
You see that is the difference, the newer darker Ghost Rider series is simply better and oh yea, I have read the lite hearted crap you call Ghost Rider and it doesnt work. That is why GR needs to go dark.

Why do you think that the newer Punisher Max series is so freakkin popular? Because its dark and it's how Frank Castle should actually be. Not some spandex hero wanna be, I never liked Punisher comics until the Maxx series. made me a believer.
  • Anti-Septic
You want to know what the problem with the first Ghost Rider film was? It was made for "Six Year Olds", sorry Ghost Rider is supposed to be scary and that cannot be achieved with a script that is friendly to young children.

Ok, you made the first film for the kiddies, now it is time for an adult movie! Make Ghost Rider the way it is supposed to be, dark! Quit screwing it up Hollywood!
  • I saw the first one as at least entertaining. It was much like the Thomas Jane Punisher. Let's hope this isn't like the second Punisher.
  • Rob merritt
I enjoyed Ghost Rider. The high lights of the movie were Peter Fonda and Sam Elliott. I would totally love a Sam Elliott ghost rider movie. I thought Nick Cage was just ok. I think he is a decent actor and I'm glad for once hollywood didn't cast a kid to young to play the part but he just didn't feel right. Wes Bentley was horrible.
  • Ghost Rider is one of the worst comic films, next to The Phantom and The Fantastic Four films.
  • ahhhh The Phantom what a wonderful mess that was :D
  • id much rather see a new Daredevil film than Ghost Rider
  • oh i love that idea.. much more interesting then a sequel to this..
  • I concur.

    Jason Statham for Daredevil reboot.
  • that would be fun but the Staths American accent is truly awful .. plus its odd seeing him with hair .... just doesn't look right
  • Yeah, the wig looked awful because they lowered Nic's hair line all of a sudden. I mean, for the past 15 years, Nicholas Cage has always had that receding thinning hairline, but in Ghost Rider and The Weather Man, it's all think and low. It doesn't help that he doesn't have the youthful looks to pull it off.

I like Nic overall, but he's playing a Sam Jackson as of late. I still like Adaptation though.
  • Adaptation is an awesome film.

Cages hair just looks bad because the colour is SO wrong it makes it stand out too much its a really bad wig/dye job.
  • Serios? Everything you tried to say in the original failed...what you gonna try say this time?
  • what I enjoyed the first one. It was hilarious. Nicolas Cage = epic comedian.
  • Really? I bawl like a baby whenever I watch a film of his.
  • I guess you miss the irony and sarcasm of Sari's post. :(
  • Nah, I was putting out fire with gas..
  • I was in Ghost Rider, and got payed quite a abit for just being an extra. The movie really went down hill, and i had so much expectation for it too.. I doubt they will make the sequel be any better..

  • They need to film the David Goyer script of Ghost Rider. That was some good stuff.

It's a very dark/haunting script which I really enjoyed reading.
  • Cage equals fail as far as I'm concerned. Time for a reboot of the franchise. I say make it a hard R and go full bore for the horror element. Some of the new Ghost Rider have been pretty brutal. Why not go that route instead? Hopefully it's not to protect the feelings of the four living fans of the first movie.
  • this could only work if Cage comes back and hands the torch over to someone else.
iv no idea why they are making another one the last sucked monkey balls.
