It seems like a bunch of Los Angeles-based film fans snuck into a super secret advanced screening of Drag Me to Hell. So is Sam Raimi’s return to horror the real deal? It appears so. Here is a round up of quotes from around the web. We’ll add more when they become available, so check back.

Collider: “If you’ve seen the Evil Dead movies and love them, then you’ll loooooove this movie. It’s the best movie I’ve seen in theaters in such a long time.” … “There are some moments where I just jumped out of my chair. It’s really great.” … “I wish Raimi wasn’t doing Spider-Man 4 and he just did a ton of movies like this. It’s so great to see he still has it.”

elguapo1 on Twitter: “Awesome. Old school Raimi horror at its best.”

AICN (scooper named MiscalledHobos): “This movie…oh man. I didn’t realize how much I missed having this living piss scared out of me.” … “his movie was sincerely fantastic. I love Sam Raimi and, after being turned off by Spiderman 3, I was immensely stoked to see a horror film from him. I can’t recommend it enough.”

FirstShowing: “Raimi has returned to true form — resurrected like an Army of Darkness, you could say.” … “Drag Me to Hell played like a vintage classic in the vein of Raimi’s own Evil Dead series and the inimitable Bruce Campbell vs Army of Darkness. Bucket loads of blood and gore, edge-of-your-seat, clenched-cheek suspense, and laughs, laughs, laughs. Sure, Raimi recycles gags from his previous camp classics and doesn’t stray from the tone of those films either, but that’s why it succeeds! It’s uproarious and over-the-top. And it’s absolutely terrifying and really funny — all within the same second.”

AndrewDignan on Twitter: “Sam recycles every great gag from the Evil Dead films in service of a throwaway story. So, kind of awesome.”

Brandon Lee Tenney on Twitter: “It was A LOT of fun and most definitely vintage Raimi at his best.”

Quint on AICN: it was 70% Army of Darkness and 30% EVIL DEAD.” … the movie isn’t flawless… the story’s been told before, etc… but goddamn it’s done in a really fun way by one of the genre’s best filmmakers. The seance scene, without a doubt, will be held up with some of the best scenes of Raimi’s previous movies.”

GeekTyrant: “It has been a long time since we have seen a horror movie directed by Sam Raimi, and I gotta tell you I loved it! He brought it and he brought it hard! Raimi has still got the skills and he made one of the best freakin horror films I have seen in years! It was everything I hoped it would be and more.” … “For a PG-13 movie it was pretty hardcore and in your face disgusting. There are images in this film that made me gag, and groan out load, at the same time it had me gleefully laughing with Raimi’s classic sense of humor.”

FirstShowing on Twitter: “It was great - now I just want to watch Army of Darkness! ”

ShockTillYouDrop: “When it comes to horror, this film proves Raimi has not lost his touch. Not by a fraction. Drag Me to Hell is an achievement in the fact that it’s PG-13 and scary (the film made me jump several times) and, better still, an original story.”

The Daring Adventures of Bingo TC: “A good suspenseful movie, Sam Raimi still knows how to get get you to be shocked, scared and laugh at the same time.” … “the setup for the twist ending (of course there had to be one) was a little obvious.”

  • I knew it. There was a lot of discontent with the script, but I just knew people were going to fall over themselves for the finished film.

    I can't wait!
  • Good to hear, I've been waiting a while to find a good horror movie to be excited about. Last one I can remember was Rob Zombies Halloween. Sad but true. But I gotta say, that Haunting in Cincinnati movie looks wicked cool. But till then, can't wait to see more details on this. woo!
  • Haunting in Connecticut. FYI :)
  • wow, im dumb. Thanks for that, I was wondering why it wasnt showing up on IMDB =P
  • /ambient
So when is it coming out?
  • Best news I've heard all day. Of course, it is just 2 in the morning.
  • nathan name
GAG... DRIVE HEAVE... GAG... Who cares!?!?1?
  • Drive heave?
  • i would say a vast majority of the "Evil Dead" fanatics out there.
  • jason B
great news, i don't even mind sm3, cuz sam's the fuckin man.
  • Thank god, i thought he might have forgot how to get it done in the horror genre after countless blockbusters... Get back to your roots, Sammy!!!!
  • Palmer
So is there any Bruce Campbell cameo in the movie?
  • He better be!
  • He's probably off pushing the My Name is Bruce DVD. I'm not sure if you guys have caught that one yet... It kinda sucked.
I admit that the combination of Bruce and Raimi is masterful, but Bruce on his lonesome is kind of lost. I still laugh my ass off every time I see his cameo in Spider Man 3, the French restaurant guy. That was classic. Another reason why Spider Man 3 is the best Spiderman movie. That's right, I said it. If you consider yourself a fan of camp and old school Raimi style humor, you would agree too!
  • there will be something. He has a cameo in every single one of his movies along with the Raimi family car.
  • It comes out it late May. I CANT WAIT FOR THIS! I have been following the really closely since how fun the comic con panel was. I am speechless in my happiness of how great they are saying it is. Also Peter, how the hell do people find out about these screenings?!?
  • Seriously, no Bruce no care.
  • By the way I can't wait til' this comes out also, despite the obvious reason, but I can't wait to see how this movie bitch slaps all those hack horror remaking Directors and it shows you how to make an original horror. Nothing totally against horror remakes, I am kind of looking forward to Friday the 13th a little, but jesus there are not enough original horror movies. LOL also this news just made the movies wait feel a lot longer.
  • Is anyone worried though how it will perform at the box office though? I know Raimi's name now means more then it did 10 years ago with general audiences but still, it comes out a week after Terminator and comes out the same weekend as UP. Why doesn't I think Universal should shift the movie to April.
  • Phew! Something to get rid of spiderman 3 nightmares

hold on guys did GeekTyrant said “For a PG-13 movie it was pretty hardcore and in your face disgusting. " wait aint this movie a horror movie how can you do a horror movie that is a P-13. i had enough of this P-13 rating movie are the film studios are that scared to do a R rated film
  • authentic.imitation
fuck PG-13 horror films. what a joke.
  • Evil Dead 4... i'm there.
  • Sadly, I think that ship has long sailed.
  • Sitrom
Don't understand this PG13 malarky. I'm English. Is it that they try to get the younger audience involved so make it less adult thus taking everything away that could possibly make it a good adult horror film resulting in a product that not many people go and see opening weekend and then sinks without a trace leaving true horror fans feeling...neglected. Why can't hollywood do 2 cuts of the film. Make one R and one pg13. The kids go and see it earlier in the day and the adults have the night. Even if the cut version makes little sense. Hollywood doesn't care, I don't care. Give me a grown up horror film for grown ups.

The first version of Saturday Night Fever I saw was a PG VHS version because I was too young to purchase the 18 rated version. It didn't make a lot of sense but there is a precedent.

Kinda looking forward to Friday 13th tho.
  • I have a feeling that GeekTyrant hasn't seen a lot of "hardcore" horror movies. If this movie is PG-13, I have a feeling that it's more humorous than hardcore, more campy than scary.
  • filmkid
i guess GeekTyrant has not seen many hardcore horror movies. i just cant get my head around PG-13 horror movies i know the The Unborn is P-13 but its was going to be rubbish before it was made because David S. Goyer directed it. David S. Goyer is a better writer then a director i dont know how he cant do both tho LOL. anyway Sam Raimi should give us EVIL DEAD 4 we been waiting too long.
  • DeadByDawn
    YES!!! Thanks god!
  • Ben
Really? Viewers "snuck into a super secret" screening? Well, I guess that's sexier sounding than "got tickets from the guy who stands outside the theater every day handing out passes to test screenings," or "got spammed by movietickets.com for matching a target demographic." Sheesh.
  • Weyland_Yutani
A Sam Raimi film shouldn't really be the target of the PG-13 vs. R discussion. I think most people agree that a proper horror film should probably have an "R" rating, but I'm not sure this film would fit into the sort of film that would lose much in PG-13 translation. It's Sam Raimi.

Now, if something like The Unborn came out as PG-13, it would deserve every bit of criticism it deserves.
  • Way to create buzz, I'm sure the producers are just *kicking* themselves that these damn brats got in and spread some early word! Regardless, it sounds positive, and it IS a new horror flick from the guy who brought us the first successful Video Nasty, the first since The GIft which was decent enough. I'm going to see it on principle, pretty much a thank-you for the first Evil Dead. Lord knows I wasn't thinking of him during those damn Spiderman films.
  • Super stoked! I don't know how many times I've watched the Evil Dead films. I was at this panel for Comic-Con and I was totally sold right then and there. I know I'm probably the minority here, but I'm happy it's PG-13 because that means I can see it whenever I want without having to take my mom. Can't wait for this.
  • Alright sounds sweet. I love Evil Deads and Army of Darkness. I feel that this movie would be rated R if the Spiderman movies didn't exist. The studio probably thinks this has a chance to make money now so they forced the PG-13 rating.
  • im stoked to see this movie now.
  • I bet Ellen Page is kicking herself in the ass right about now....

I like Alison Lohman better anyways.
  • WillV
Let's not get too crazy over the PG-13/R rating situation. Although, I agree that a true adult horror film should always be rated R (Friday the 13th here I come), there is some precedent where a horror film or thriller or whatever was rated PG-13 or PG and delivered the good: Jaws. Enough said.
  • Mary
I was supposed to go to that showing but I took a nap and didnt wake u in time. Darn.
  • Weyland_Yutani
Great, great news. One of the few films that I will make the time to see on opening day.
  • I would like to see Evil Dead 4 one day, but ever since the Spider-Man 4 news, I doubt it will happen.
  • Exciting news!!! I can't wait to see this flick.
  • And Can we all take a moment to thank Ellen Page for being to "BIG" ( Pun kinda intended but is it really there... Oh ya she's short!) in her own mind, and dropping out of this soon to be great piece of awesome
  • this is going to be a new classic for Raimi
  • Andrew
    i miss xena :(
  • The clips at the Comic Con were GREAT! This is totally vintage Evil Dead. Not Evil Dead 3. I'm talkin' Evil Dead TWO! OH YEAH! :)
  • Sounds like this one is going to be pretty cool(and chock-full of vintage horrific sights that only Sam Raimi can deliver),for I guess that this is the closest that Raimi will ever get to making another "Evil Dead" film(even if it's a PG-13 rated female slant version of those films).
