Last night at the SAG Awards, Mickey Rourke was on the red carpet when he revealed to Access Hollywood that he may be wrestling for WWE’s Wrestlemania 25, which will be held in Houston, TX on April 5:

The boys from the WWE called me and asked me to do it…I said, ‘I want to.’ I’m talking with [Wrestler] Rowdy Roddy Piper about it.

[For video of a similar exchange in which Rourke basically confirms it, click here]

Darren Aronofsky’s The Wrestler, for which Rourke received a Golden Globe and an Oscar nomination, has won acclaim both for Rourke’s performance and for its candid depiction of the wrestling profession. I outgrew my enjoyment of professional wrestling long ago, but Rourke’s participation would definitely get me to tune in. It’s not clear to me whether or not Rourke will actually be doing a proper wrestling match,or if it will be more of a cameo-style appearance, but based on what I’ve seen/read, it’s sounding like he’s actually going to be stepping into the ring for real. Still, I can’t decide if this news is the most awesome thing I’ve ever heard, or the most baffling.

At least Rourke is excited about it. “Chris Jericho, you better get in shape,” Rourke said. “Because I’m coming after your ass.”

This is the best news ever.
  • i agree. wrestling is so fucking dumb nowadays, but i will watch wrestlemania if that rourke rumor is true.
  • Based on the interviews with former professional wrestlers you guys posted a few weeks ago, there seems to be a lot of admiration between the wrestlers and Mickey. He'll be able to go in the ring, no problem.
  • That would be funny if he actually wrestled as "The Ram"...
  • Rom
Even though I haven't watched wrestling in ages, and the current state of mainstream wrestling is complete crap, I'd totally watch Wrestlemania again if Rourke was participating.
  • The main problem with this was that Vince at first hated the movie, he trashed it and when it was getting released the WWE began to trashed Mickey about his face being like a leather couch but now since he won the golden globe they started kissing his ass and highlighting the movie on the page. I feel that the WWE is taking advantage of this movie and trying to ride the wave of interest and the Oscar buzz..I thought that the writing in professional wrestling was its low point nowadays but now I know its attitude towards this amazing film and its actor.
  • Of course they're taking advantage of this. Why else would anyone that's famous go on there show?
  • I can't remember where I read it, probably some article or vid here, but some prominent wrestler (or maybe the Wrestler's stunt coordinator) said that Mickey's technique/skill was better than like 80% of the professional wrestlers out there right now.

I would watch the shit out of this. "Randy The Rammmmmmmm Robinson!!!!!"
  • that's something i hadn't considered, will he be fighting as Randy or as Mickey rourke?
  • I have never watched more than 5 minitues of wrestling in my life but I would pay big bucks to see some him pull a Ram Jam on national television.
  • The Wrestler is a great, great movie.
  • That film would be nothing without Mickey, he played that role so amazing.. A very good film to watch if anyone hasnt seen it yet.
  • I don't watch wrestling but if rourk is fighting Nada from they live then you can count me in.
  • blackmanjew
with the chance of a wardrobe malfunction i would pay for a ppv event... keep the jerkins handy
  • I too have lost my way with wrestling but if Rourke actually gets a match, I will definitely watch it.
  • Hey David,

Nothing personal man, but everytime I'm reading something you wrote I can inmediately tell it was you who wrote it without having to see your name in the blog.

I think this happens because, in MY opinion (note the stress on the my), I find your articles very opinion based, compared to your workmates. I mean, it is good for you to give your opinion, every one does, but not through the whole article, leave that for the end, like every one else does.

Again, nothing personal, as a matter of fact you seem to be a very nice guy, but it kind of bothers me to read your articles sometimes because of this. I think the information is valuable, but I do not want to know your opinion as I'm reading it. It makes what I'm reading too subjective. And as a journalist, I think you should detach (objectivity) yourself a little more from the articles.

    Have a great day.
  • see more glass
hey david, don't change a thing.
  • I actually agree with this. I love the hell out of you Dave, but sometimes, I don't want to know what you think.
  • Or...and forgive me if I am out of line here. He could not do that, and you could read something else.
  • A well put together post. Hypocritical, though. You seem to sprinkle your opinion over your own comments.

Wait...your opinion is SUPPOSED to be made apparent in comments, my bad.

And...dear Jesus...that's the entire point of a blog!

I'm sorry man, I'm having a total revelation here. While I'm busy being blown away, why don't you read a newspaper?
  • Pretty good reply if I don't say so myself. Or am I giving too much of my opinion for some of you?
  • Wow, I just got home and saw all the e-mails. I guess my comment was kind of popular.

Anyway, just to clarify a few things. I don't quite understand why is my comment hypocritical, after all, I'm commenting, not informing, which are very different from one another.

I stated previously that I do not mind David giving his opinion about what he's writing about, on the contrary, I think he should. What I mind is him doing it as he is "telling" the story.

If the entire point of this blog, in particular, was to read other people's opinion I wouldn't even bother to read it, because after all, I do have a brain and I do not need anyone telling me what to think about anything. On the other hand, I feel that everyone else, Peter, Hunter, Brendon, etc. Do an excellent job, because they tell the story and afterwards they say what they think about it, which is the way they taught me objectivity works when you're informing, not commenting, in my journalism courses.

Again, I do not have anything against David, as I said before, he seems to be a very nice person.

Thank you for reading and have great day.
  • Do they teach you about editorials in those courses?
  • Briefly, but I get your point...
  • starscream9289
    The Ram vs. Y2J?

Wrestlemania will never, EVERRRRR be the same AGAIIIIN!

You guys should start a wrestling blog.

Picture it: /Wrestle "Chockeslamming the wrestling world." xD
  • Jon
I might actually watch this now just to see Rourke. I think it's a great idea, and a great way to market the film as it is starting to play in more theaters across the country.
  • igroveman
In many ways this makes more sense than at first glance. Wrestling is much like movie making in the sense of being contrived entertainment. There is probably not a whole lot of difference between the work Mickey already did for the film and actually wrestling. He probably thinks it will be a lot of fun.
  • 790
Gheez. Just stick to acting Mickey.
  • Mel
Judging from last night's Royal Rumble, it looks set to be Chris Jericho vs The Undertaker at WrestleMania. I'm guessing Rourke will play some role in that match.
  • Nathan Name
    *SIGH*
  • Ram Jam, Ram Jam, Ram Jam, Ram Jam!!!!!!
But seriously, is there a better way to rekill a career?
  • No this is obviously in fun one time thing that works with a character he preformed. Totally different than his boxing attempt.
  • Ok, so is he going on as "The Ram" or as himself. Cause the former would be awesome!
  • Jfive
Im surprised they didnt think of this sooner I would love to see the Ram in the ring on live tv even though i cant stand wrestling anymore.
  • This is the best bit of news ever, no arguing about it.
  • portable ghost
that would be so goddamn awewsome! watching Randy "The Ram" Robinson use the Ram Jam on some schmuck "for real" would be so cool!

like many others i havent watched pro wrestling in years (when it stopped being "family entertainment" i.e. the "attitude era" i lost interest) but would definately check this out

Rourke is the man! Ram Jam!

p.s. i would LOVE to get a Randy "The Ram" t-shirt, or any merchandise for that matter, does anybody know if that exists? if not, it should. i would totally wear that
  • dark
    TRue

I don't think that shirt exist, but mayb they will make some merchandising real soon

I'm looking for that Randy the ram action figure lol.
I bet that thing would probably cost 300bucks lol
  • I will be very happy if he has some other role than Special Referee, but my money's on that. It's cheap, but he could technically still be considered "wrestling" if he plays it like every other special referee EVER.
  • Lono
Guy is wasting no time turning himself back into a joke.
  • whyyyyyy is Mickey Rourke so tan.
  • Dr. Doc
it would be completely EPIC to see Randy "The Ram" Robinson take on The Ayotollah at Wrestlemanis 25!!!

The Ayotollah was played by Earnest Miller, a former pro wrestler himself, so we know Rourke and Miller could put on a good show!

man, that would be so awesome
  • Well ironicly enough Chris Jericho was once known as the Ayotollah of RocknRolla.
  • Dr. Doc
dude, i totally forgot about that! good call my man!
  • This is pretty funny. Deep down, this is a guilty pleasure that I can't wait to see... But i do agree that stunts like this coupled with those rediculous glasses that Rourke keeps wearing to all the award shows will lead him back to C- List status rather quickly. Rourke has made an epic comeback, and I would hate to see him tank it back into the shitter. Lets just hope its a short, sweet cameo in which he doesn't make a complete jackoff out of himself.
  • Chris
    Woooooooooooooo! Y2J! Y2J!
  • Sam
Actually after what Big Show did to Taker, it might be Taker Vs. Show. If Y2J is gonna hold a grudge for getting thrown out by taker than so should JTG, but anyways im sure if Rourke wanted Y2J he'll get Y2J.
  • Taker Vs Show at a WrestleMania?? It has been years since I watched WWF, but that sounds like one boring motherfuking main event match!
  • Dooey
Actually from what it looked like last night, that short stand-off between Taker and HBK was VERY telling.
  • If 'The Wrestler' was released during the Attitude era, where the WWF actually had the propensity to be a bit unpredictable and creative at times, I would love this.

But because of what the WWE has become these days -- predictable dross that ann 8-year-old could call -- I'm not interested in this at all.
  • This sounds like a cool idea that has possibilities, so I'm sure Vince McMahon and his goons will find a way to f*ck it up.
