Has Production on Astroboy Shut Down?

Steve Hulett is the Business Rep. and Kevin Koch the president of The Animation Guild (TAG), Local 839 IATSE.  They also keep a very interesting blog about the ups, downs, ins and outs of living and working as a professional animator.

Sadly, they’re now reporting that production on Imagi’s Astroboy movie appears to have shut down.  This comes just days after I last reported on the film, on how it appears to have just scraped through it’s troubles with the recession.  They have no official word on the matter, just information from those that have been working on the film.

Koch reported, “We’ve heard from one of Imagi’s Los Angeles animators that he was called at home on Saturday, Jan. 24, and told that the studio was out of cash, and that he should not report to work on Monday. Since this is all happening over the weekend, we’ve been unable to get any confirmation from official studio sources.”

One anonymous source said “They’ve not only had cash flow problems, but production pipeline/workflow issues, stymied further by transcontinental communication issues. They’ve attempted to misguidedly import production systems that could work well if the expectations of the creative team, mostly Western, were more in sync with the Eastern culture. Not a new problem, but one very evident at Imagi.”

It’s very sad to read this, but to temper that just a little, there’s no reason to assume the shutdown is permanent. If new funds are secured and transitioned in a timely fashion, there’s every chance that production will start again soon. Unfortunately, there’s also no reason to assume that all of the animation team will be kept on the project, and I fear that there could be a large number of redundancies.

Some indication of how far along production on Astroboy has come would probably give us some idea of how likely it is that the project is shelved entirely. It isn’t beyond the realms of impossibility that the work done so far would now be padded out with inferior quality sequences and the finished product (and I mean product) rushed out, straight to DVD. If you’ve seen Arabian Knights, the botched “completion” of Richard Williams’ sublime labour of love, The Thief and the Cobbler, you’ll know exactly what I mean.

  • Does anybody even care?
  • I do, it looks to be really good.
  • Of course some people care. I used to watch AstroBoy every morning before school. I was interested in this (but more interested in the Voltron project), its a shame for the filmmakers involved that this was shut down. Hopefully it finds a green light elsewhere.
  • I wasn't even aware there was such a thing as Astro Boy before the news started popping up here on /film. So I don't have much of a connection towards it. :P
  • I really don't care about the film, I'm not an Astroboy fan and I probably would not even see it or rent it. But I do feel bad for the animators and everybody involved.

    Than why Comment?

Anyway I've never heard of The Astro Boy story. And this would have been great seeing as he's regarded as the first Anime character. =/

    ^ Then
  • Never cared
  • I care. I like Astro Boy and my son was really looking forward to this movie. *sheds a tear*
  • Jon
I care. I was looking forward to taking my son to see this. It's too bad. I'm really sick and tired of seeing the same old animated films each and every year. I want to see another animation studio start making some good movies instead of Pixar and Dreamworks.

I did really care. I love the old Astro Boy show and was excited for this. Imagi's Ninja Turtles movie was awesome and gave me a ton of hope for this. I really hope they can get this back on track before too long.
  • How does something like this happen?
  • When an Executive Producer or a Studio greenlights a project they are doing so based primarily on a budget submission. There is always fine print talking about fiscal changes in economy, etc. The budget isn't handed to the producers as a lump sum - it is trickled down 'as required'... and the execs can kill that trickle whenever they feel the need, thus killing the project.
  • Oh I see, I figured that when someone has a budget, that the money is secured and used strictly for the project that the money was to go to, in this case the Astro Boy movie. I had no idea it was trickled down and could have been stopped at any moment depending on the economy, even though we heard it made it passed the rough part of it. I knew that it was possible to hault production but no in the way you explained it.

Thanks by the way for the explanation.
  • I like Astro Boy and I /wasn't/ looking forward to this movie. H-wood need to leave things be and start working on original properties.

Such a shame that this happened. I myself care a great deal that Tezuka's works get the exposure they deserve as they are every bit as important as western classic comic book character properties..(if not moreso imho)

Then again with the hints pointing at communication issues between cultures, I'd sooner hope it gets completed sometime in Japan.
Seriously, if that ends up being the case..Will be totally worth it.

I was really excited when I heard of this happening so I'm really sad to see it go out this way. Regardless of how the studio would show Atom if it was anything like TMNT I would have been ok with it. I really hope they pick up somewhere down the line and don't sacrifice quality for sake of releasing it.
  • Astroboy is not dead! Union laws required the studio to shut down for a week due to lack of on hand funding.

  • Well that's a relief. I thought that it would be a big waste of time to spend all that money that already went into production. I'm not necessarily a fan of Astro Boy, but it is nice to see that the struggling economy didn't have a direct effect on a movie that I know alot of people want to see.
  • The First Anime of the history. I do not walk in step with the big Anime. I hope it comes out as the coolest of Dragonball. Anime and more I want in the movies.
  • I kind of figured they were going to really screw it up. So I am not to broken up about it.
  • This is a shame, i was wanting more from this film. Astro Boy has a huge fan base, this could have made alot of money..

Ninja turtles was great cgi movie ,and not overly done ( Expense Wise). And I was

looking forward to this movie , It`s always awesome when the little companies pull

off something different than the big guys . And Do it BETTER !!! , Which much smaller budget . It`s ashame , But I don`t think it`s over ...not by a longshot .
  • No astroboy=[ Does everyone agree this is bad news!!
