Sundance Movie Review: Adventureland

Not quite as clever as I had hoped it might be, and not quite the comedy that the early trailers make it out to be, Adventureland is instead it’s a very traditional coming of age film with few or no surprises — It’s comfortable. But that’s not to say that Greg Motolla’s follow-up to Superbad doesn’t have it’s own unique charm. Mottola is able to bring you back to the Summer that you believed could be life changing. In many ways it feels like a film that was made 20 years ago, and because of that has this new-modern classic glow.

I screened this film right before seeing The Informers, and I feel that Adventureland is a much better representation of the 1980’s. At least for me. It’s extremely relatable, even if you’ve never worked in a crappy amusement park. Kristen Stewart brings her trademark tics including her overused bit where she nervously can’t stop playing with her hair. The soundtrack is killer, featuring the best and worst of the 1980’s.

Bill Hader and Kristen Wiig (how much do we love her?) brought some much appreciated comedy, but the addition felt uneven in relation to the rest of the film. But at the end of the day I’m a sucker for these type of films. And even if this film doesn’t achieve the greatness that I had hoped it could, it is still a very solid film for the genre.

/Film Rating: 7.5 out of 10

  • That's about what I expected for this one. I figure it's kind of like if Superbad wasn't written by Seth and Evan, what would it be? It would be a typical one day spanning teen coming of age and trying to get laid culminating at the party at the end of the day. The thing that made Superbad special was that Seth and Evan's raunchy sense of humor infused every line of dirty dialogue. It would still have been a good movie, a solid entry, but it wouldn't be what it is today. This is like that without Evan and Seth and set in the 1980's. Different characters but same feeling.
  • everytime i see this picture i think its christopher poole.
    lol u no
  • i'm interested in checking this out, if only because it was shot at Kennywood park in Pittsburgh, a place i went to at least 5 times every summer when i was younger.
  • Nick
That Kristen Stewart broad needs to hang it up. Fucking sucks as an actress.
  • I don't agree with you. She was quite good in "In the land of woman"... and she is, let's say, very good looking!!
  • So is the Mona Lisa. But it can't act either.
  • But, as far as I'm concerned, the Mona Lisa wasn't playing on "In the land of woman"...! But nice try, anyway! :)
  • No, but if it had it would have been less 2 dimensional than her. Oooh, see what I did there? :P
  • haha! nice one!
  • cekma
The real adventureland this is based on is right by home. Great childhood memories there.
  • "In many ways it feels like a film that was made 20 years ago, and because of that has this new-modern classic glow."

Setting the film in 1987 does help.
  • Im glad he went and did a movie like this! If he did another superbad type comedy he would be instantly typecasted!
I wasnt interested in this movie from the trailers or the clips
  • OK, I wasn't expecting greatness from this. Nothing in the trailers or clips piqued my interest more than the supporting players, Hader, Wiig and of course, the one and only Bill Haverchuck; Martin Starr. How was he?

Mottola's next project with Simon Pegg and Nick Frost and an alien has me more intrigued.
  • Yeah, I wanna hear more about Bill Heverchuck. He was awesome on Freaks and Geeks. Might he have a future in film?
  • But, as far as I'm concerned, the Mona Lisa wasn't playing on "In the land of woman"...!
  • Burt
The Daytrippers is still Mottola's best.
  • kristen wiig is fucking AMAZING. go see ghost town, everyone, if you haven't already.
  • I'll probably end up seeing this one... it looks cute
  • I really want to see this film.
