Curious Open Casting Call for The Last Airbender

/Film reader McGruff sends in this update on the casting of M Night Shyamalan’s big screen live action adaptation of Avatar, The Last Airbender.

Hey Peter,

I heard you guys discussing Shyamalan’s recent casting decision for Avatar: The Last Airbender on the SlashFilmCast the other week and I thought I could shed some extra light on the situation. I go to school in Philly and our newspaper recently ran an Open Casting Call for extras in the film. Here’s the Link: dailypennsylvanian.com.

So, there are a couple of things about this casting notice:

1) They seem to be compensating for the fact that they cast white kids in the lead roles by asking for numerous multi-ethnic actors to try out for the film. Won’t it be a little weird when Aang, Katara, and Sakka are white, but their tribes-people are all different elasticities? A little odd, M. Night, a little odd.

2) Also, note the casting director’s comments about what actors should wear to the auditions. She says that if you’re Korean, wear a Kimono, and if you’re Belgian, wear Lederhosen. Hmm… Kimonos are JAPANESE, not Korean, and Lederhosen are definitely NOT Belgian. If anything, they are German or Dutch. Seriously, if you are that clueless about other cultures, how can you possibly make a film whose content is inspired by Chinese and Indian history/mythology.

The casting call just shows how much the film crew is trying to compensate for screwing up the primary casting.

If you post this, my name is McGruff

  • M. Knight should have his director's guild membership revoked.
  • I agree. Can this be the Last M Night Shyamalan film. Ever? PLEASE? He's turning into the next Uwe Boll.
  • Water
"...but their tribes-people are all different elasticities?" HAHAHA! And I thought all tribes-people stretched the same.

(While I appreciate the up-to-date info from Slashfilm, would it kill you to just read through your posts at least ONCE before posting? This isn't a typo. This is just lazy. I look forward to much mockery here in the comments here.)
  • This is a letter someone sent in, it was not written by Peter. Congratulations on the beginning of the mockery.
  • Yeah, I had to read "elasticities" a couple times to convince myself that it actaully said "elasticities." LOL!
  • Mcgruff
haha woops. my bad. i guess the casting call doesnt mention the required stretchiness of the extras
  • Ah, don't worry about it. Thanks for the heads up, at least it made page 1 of /Film.
  • i feel compelled to moan everytime i hear news about this movie, which annoys even me. but MAN it sucks that they whitewashed it, it really does. shyamalan will probably address this at some point himself (i know a ton of bloggers will raise the issue in interviews) and it will be extremely interesting to hear his justification...
  • Is Shamalamadingdong news worthy?
  • Yep.
  • any movie news is worth blogging about..
  • FilmFreak
Talking about clueless?. Lederhosen are from Austria and Austria only. LOL.
  • castingsux
i think the bigger picture is the casters not mcgruff. "
She says that if you’re Korean, wear a Kimono, and if you’re Belgian, wear Lederhosen."
that is a bit worrying. what were brian and mike thinking letting m night shyamalan directing a movie with lots of emphasis on culture
  • The first mistake they made was getting M. Shyamalan (I refuse to use his made-up middle name) to direct. This movie just seems to be getting worse and worse and looks like it's going to mar a fantastic series.
  • fuck man. don't ruin this. avatar is one great piece of art. one of the greatest tv show i have ever seen. everyone should watch it. please dont fuck it up
  • i agree, but it's too late, they alreay started!
  • i agree, but it's too late, they already started!
  • vilnolin
i happened to love the cartoon, and have been searching like crazy for the auditions (then i found out the director...oh well...maybe one more actor can...ok, i just would still wanna be part of the film!)

then they go and call up the agents for people they were intrested in for the extras casting ON THE SAME DAY AS THE CASTING. my agent got the call at noon for a 10 am audition in Philidelphia (where apparently all the castings are taking place).

they're not only screwing up the story, they're not even organized for auditions.
  • So, as much as I like Shaymalan, his casting people seem racially ignorant to the point of being offensive. I was willing to go along with the "whitewashed" cast under the theory that Avatar takes place on a different planet, so technically, the characters are no ethnicity that we know of. But Koreans wearing kimonos and Belgians in lederhosen, is over the line. Telling people to be as stereotypically ethnic as possible seems racist, especially considering the fact that Shaymalan himself is Indian. WTF!
  • The news in this post fills me with great vengeance and furious anger.
  • I concur with this statement.. ten times, even!
  • I'm with you. I can't decide if I should go "Super-Saiyan" or into my "Avatar State" over this mess.
  • Take it easy there Sammy J.
  • I gave this guy another chance after 'Lady in the Water' because 'The Sixth Sense' is the shit...But after 'The Happening' and now THIS racist shit, I dunno if I can truly say I respect this guy...Fucking sell-out...
  • lazy like failing to read that peter didn't write that, "mcgruff" did?
  • Troy
Why oh Why? There are some things that should just be left alone. Shaymalan........go make another "the crappening" and walk away NOW from this.
  • Palmer
Does anyone even care about Shaymalan films anymore? I mean, it's one thing to write crappy movies. It's another to make a crappy movie of a pretty good cartoon with a large fan base...which he kind of alienated by whitewashing the cast.
  • theuglyspirit
    Haha, this amuses me greatly.

I wonder if anyone will let him make a movie after he does this....
  • I can't believe Shaymalan is even making another movie after The Happening. I think he should pay us to see his movies from now on.
  • CeeBee
No, He couldnt afford how much it would cost for us to watch. i hope he gets beaten by a retarded kid in a cape, chokes on evil plants, and gets mauled by a grass-wolf. that bastard.
  • Jfive
Is it just me or is Shaymalan's film career going in the wrong direction? This is the guy that made Sixth Sense and Unbreakable right? what the hell happened lol
  • I'm sure the muti-ethnic background extras will make up for the lilly white leads no reason for the asians to be upset now.
  • Mag
I'm disgusted and wont be taking my niece to see this movie. RECAST this movie.
  • Andrew
Why is this man still making movies
  • Cbails
like most people here i agree why is Shaymalan still making movies and worst of all he had to choose Avatar, a great show with a great story, to destroy next. this movie is going to be HORRIBLE with pretty special effects. so many great possibilities for this film but so far every step has been taken in the wrong direction.
  • Ed P.
It was either him or Uwe Bolle...and he won the gig.
  • Here's the twist ending....wait for it......wait for it.......the movie will suck. I just saved you two hours.
  • tom.
    Not a twist
  • I don't see why people hate him. He is a good director. He has a couple of shit movies, but i loved unbreakable, signs, and the six sense. Its not unheard of for a director to have some bad movies. I think people are just jumping on the bandwagon of hating Shaymalan
  • Unbreakable and signs were good movies it just his last two or three were very stupid.
  • Mpuzzo
I agree. Directors go through ruts just like any other human in any other occupation. I keep telling myself everything will be fine because if you go into it open minded maybe you will be ok with it. If everyone just completely writes it off then it won't be good no matter what the movie is actually like. Just keep that in the back of your mind.
  • I did have great hope for this film but M. Night had to direct it. I loved the show for it proved America could produce an awesome show outside of japan...take that Japanese! The Water tribe are Eskimo so there not Asian, but Aang and Zuko should have been casted as Asians but are we being raciest...i think not. The Ending will be that all of the kids really were Asian...WHAT A TWIST!
  • Oi Vey
It's funny how, all of people, the casting director gets Koreans mixed up with the Japanese. A casting director should know this to a certain degree.

It's just shocking that an Indian American like M. Night is so ignorant about the race issue in Hollywood. He's a minority himself, so he could have brought in a revolution of diversity. But I still haven't seen that yet.
  • Oi Vey
Yeah, but those movies were filmed years ago. I don't know what's going on with him, but he's off his game. However, he's still a very talented man, but just..misguided as of late.
  • I really don't know too much about this stuff but it does sound weird to have an all white cast playing Indian people. I wonder how they'll go about this?
  • M.Night sucks!
Well said McGuff. From here on out, I'm never seeing an M. Night movie again. Everybody should just boycott his movies. His 15 minutes died a long time ago Just imagine if Night directed "Slumdog Millionaire." I doubt that movie would even be in Oscar contention if Night was involved.
  • The casting director recently worked on tropic thunder maybe all the white kids are going to pull a kirk lazarus and go black face.
  • cubbybunny12
i hope nickolodeon will realalize that this movie will suck and get another person 2 make the movie!!!! lets all start hoping 4 da best!!!! (im prayin every day!!)
  • they should of totally cast Johnny tsunami in this
  • vincentvega
LOL Johnny Tsunami is the shit.
