Hideo Kojima is perhaps a better filmmaker than he is a game designer. Since the Playstation’s Metal Gear Solid, Kojima has always attempted to push the envelope in terms of making video games cinematic. While it was merely an interesting artistic experiment on the PS1, Metal Gear Solid 2 & 3 on the Playstation 2 both managed to bring many new cinematic elements into the video game arena. With Metal Gear Solid 4, some would argue it’s more of a film than an actual game.

When playing these games, it’s clear that Kojima was very much inspired by some great films. Now you can check them out for yourself: Japanese media store Tsutaya is promoting 15 films that inspired the series. Some of the choices are fairly obvious (Heat, Die Hard), whereas some of the films left out are pretty damned surprising (no Escape from New York!). The full list is as follows:

  • The Guns of Navarone
  • The Great Escape
  • Goldfinger
  • 2001: A Space Odyssey
  • Planet of the Apes (original)
  • The Deer Hunter
  • Dawn of the Dead
  • Full Metal Jacket
  • Predator
  • Die Hard
  • Heat
  • Black Hawk Down
  • Children of Men
  • Bourne Series
  • Casino Royale (with Daniel Craig)

Discuss: What do you think of this list? Are there any major cinematic influences you can name for the Metal Gear Solid series?

  • No Escape from New York/La = automatic failure
  • asianrage
Did the list fails? or did the games failed because Kojima didn't list what you wanted.

Anyway, I'm sure it had an influence, but not something he had cared enough about to put down.
  • Please, make sense. No comprende
  • asianrage
Je ne te comprends pas, aussi.

    Dude_Diggler = Automatic Failure?

How about I shorten my retort so you could understand it easier..

Did the list fails because the list didn't note the movie that you had wanted and/or expected to see?
  • Oh please "shorten my retort".. I can't understand you because you obviously do not dominate the english language... not that there is anything wrong with that but do not make as if you are simplifying things for my slow simple mind.

The list obviously fails because it left out the MAIN influence that kojima has repeatedly said to have inspired the MAIN CHARACTER. Therefore , automatic failure
  • asianrage
I never claimed that I was the master of the English language. No one can, but I'm not gonna be douchey enough to point out your own shortcomings in this area.

Regardless, my point remains, and I'll fill in the blanks for you, that "I'm sure it (the Escape series) had an influence, but (the Escape movies were) not something he had cared enough about to put down (for this list). I think this fact is being pointed out by other posters.
  • Srhodes
It influenced the main character, but I think we're talking about the game as a whole here... not just the characters within the game. Are you going to say the list also fails because he didn't put his own creation... Policenauts on there? That influenced several of the characters. They are his personal choices, but I think he was looking at a much bigger scope than simply Solid Snake. Aside from Solid Snake, Escape from New York didn't really influence a whole lot within the games themselves
  • MozThaGreat
hell yes, thats a direct homage to kurts character!!!
  • I thought Rambo was a big inspiration to the Metal Gear Solid franchise but I guess not. It's nice to see a Romero film make the list.
  • Solid
Not rambo, check out Terminator's Kyle Reese to see who snake was based on at least visually... Yep, I'm so in need of a girlfriend.
  • Liquid
Not terminator, check out Escape from New York's Snake Plisskin to see who Snake was based on at least visually... Yep. I'm so in need of a girlfriend.
  • the box art for the original metal gear is essentially a screenshot from terminator.
  • So no Rambo?
  • I do get the vibe of the movies in the games, I'm kinda suprised to see 'Dawn of the Dead'...and I always thought that 'Escape from New York' was an inspiration also because of the whole 'Iroquois Pliskin' pseudonym Snake(MSG) once took...I REALLY hope they make good live-action films off of the games one day...
  • NIZARbabul
I could definitely see more handheld in MGS4 than the others which I'm sure was inspired by CHILDREN OF MEN and the BOURNE series. But I agree, I'm really hoping that if an MGS film must be made, it be the right way and that Kojima produce it entirely. I would love Cuaron to direct.
Throwing out Boll and Ratner, who else would be a great match to direct an MGS film?
  • Solid
    Produced by Hideo Kojima
    Directed by Bryan Singer
    Written by David Hayter
    Starring Eric Bana

    =

    Bliss

    *Agreed with Diggler.*
  • no no no no definetly not bryan singer someone more along the lines of cuaron and no way for eric bana someone like josh brolin or viggo mortensen.
  • Alfonso Cuarón would be very nice...but I always got a Guillermo del Toro vibe...and Mortensen or Brolin would make great Snakes...
  • Its not clear if the list was composed by Kojima or just random picks for the article by some fanboy. I doubt that Kojima would have left Escape from NY out as he has stated many times that Snake is the main inspiration for Snake. That is why I think this list has 0 credibility.

Rambo is also a definite influence, not only for snake but the colonel figure

Also, I might be stretching it a bit but I always found the cut scenes Sergio Leone-ish
  • The Metal gear Saga was the greatest storyline in gaming history, in my opinion. Whatever you think about the game, it revolutionized how games are directed and written. I was sad to see it end in MGS4
  • any news on a Metal Gear film at all?!
  • I heard Kurt Wimmer is attached to it.
  • i seriously doubt the credibility of this list, seeing as the 8bit solid snake character design was a direct copy of michael biehn in terminator.
  • its odd he would leave out EFNY. kojima is my hero. to my next surprise im kinda pleased alot of these film sites are reporting this. it means for the most part they're actualy playing his games or at least down for exposure of the game/movies. and david hayter is just a badass.
  • does any get the casino royal reference?
  • not
no but can u explain it?
  • Ted
these are not the films that influenced the series, these are his favorite films overall. While some of them may have had an impact in his game design it is more a measure of his personal taste.
  • Liquid
Iroquois Pliskin, not snake, now I'm getting confused myself.
  • Liquid
No wait, confused even more, he WAS snake in the films, iroquois was when snake was using the name.
  • Brice Cartman86
Snake's picture in the original Metal Gear was inspired by Kyle Reese in Terminator. His bandana was inspired by The Deer Hunter NOT Rambo (according to Kojima), and yes Escape from New York was a huge inspiration. So much so that he probably didn't put it on this list because he has talked about it far too many times.
  • 10cent
    God is among us.
    And he enjoys action films.
  • This doesn't have to do with his movie influences but I'm pretty sure he got the name for Jack code name Raiden from the World War II Japanese Naval aircraft the Raiden code name Jack. Wikipedia Mitsubishi J2M.
  • Brian Rodden
Yeah I'm really surprised he didn't mention Escape from New York. His name is Snake and wears an eyepatch...Anyway, I hope they make a MGS full length movie even though the game is basically a 15-20 hour interactive movie.
  • I think that this list shows the films which influenced ONLY Metal Gear Solid 4, not the entire series, because if that would be the case, there wouldn't be Black Hawk Down, Children of Men, the Bourne series or even Casino Royale on the list.

And sorry for my bad english :)
  • That was very well spoken, no bad english found.
  • thankyoufor
WHAT??? no Escape from New York.....his names snake and isnt the one black dude with the mustache is named Pliskin?
  • Dr. Doc
the MGS games got really stupid, ridiculous and borderline comedic for me w/ Sons of Liberty. MGS on the ps one was great, but after that it got dumb
  • Heat, Die Hard are obvious? Why is that? No Metal Gear game shares any similarities with it.
  • Psycho Mantis
    lol whats going on here
  • 790
Here's 15 films that helped me do my high paying creative work on coming up with something original.

Gheesh man I wouldn't be talking about this, ya look like a creative retard Hideo.
  • Devindra, in another article, Kojima stated that Snake's headband is from The Deer Hunter, not Escape from New York.
  • There's more than just the headband that ties him to Escape from NY :P
  • Rambo seriously isn't on the list? I mean look at Roy Campbell and Colonel Trautman, they are also identical in look and sound alike.
  • Are they promoting some new Metal Gear products? That is what this sounds like. Why else do we need this listing?
  • gah
So basically just he's just an everyman fanboy. Not one suprising film listed there.
  • Escape from New York, great Film.. Metal Gear, not the best game i've played.
  • No in the making of Hideo said that he actually got the Name Jack and Rose from the movie Titanic. Funny isn't it? But at the end of "Sons of Liberty" GW stated that Jack/Raiden is nothing more than a killing machine since even his name/codename are that of a machine. So he knew that, i guess he included the codename later into the game.
  • MozThaGreat
MGS4 is the second best game ever made, rite after super mario bros. 3. the movie franchise could be the best ever or they could deliver something along the lines of uwe boll
  • Erik U
MGS4 is a great game if you ignore all of the story past the first act. It's really the most disappointed I've ever been in anything, and my expectation were not too high.

The first three games are three of the best games every, and could stand up with just about any movie. Playing the 4th game after the first three would be like watching "Batman and Robin" after "The Dark Knight." (Although the first three games tell better stories than TDK, and the 4th one is worse than B&R)
  • 15 films that made you wait through 15 hours of footage just to play the game.
