The other day, we posted about how Roland Emmerich was attached to direct Isaac Asimov’s classic Foundation trilogy. That article provoked a wave of ill will against Emmerich from many who were dubious of his ability to handle anything approaching subtlety. But despite my feelings towards Emmerich, I was still willing to give his upcoming film, 2012, a chance. I have a soft spot for disaster films. And who knows? Maybe Emmerich still has it in him to deliver a summer blockbuster with a heart and/or a brain.

Unfortunately, it’s now looking like Sony doesn’t think the film has summer blockbuster potential. While 2012 was originally supposed to be released on July 10th, it has now been moved to November 13th. According to Sony distribution president Rory Bruer, “We’ve had such success with the James Bond films in November that we wanted a big tentpole film in that slot this year…We’ve got so many films in the summer that this is the perfect answer to that.” 2012 will now go up against Sherlock Holmes with Robert Downey Jr., and Tooth Fairy. The new release date will also give the production some extra time to take care of the copious special effects required for the film.

While July 10th is a great date for studio tentpole releases, the weeks in November leading up to Thanksgiving are also a fairly lucrative time for movie studios. The question for you guys is: Would you be more likely to see the latest Emmerich disaster film in summer or fall? Or are you planning on skipping it regardless of when it’s released?

  • 2012 doesn't look that great IMO
  • We will not vanish without a fight! We're going to live on! We're going to survive! Today we celebrate our Independence Day!
  • Still a great speech.

  • I would watch it no matter what... I've heard really good stuff about it effect wise (as you pointed David, it's not gonna have heart not brain.. like nobody in the effect houses even know who has the lead role in the movie - that would be John Cusack) But effect wise, it's going to be a really good...

But if it was released in the summer, it would have been 2 weeks after Transfomers 2 for the ultimate Lords of Destruction/Mayhem/Deusch showdown which would have been funny (I think)

Eventhough the Summer release was better I'll still check it out in November. It looks like studios are thinking that Nov and Dec are now the new blockbuster months since some of their biggest flicks are starting to come out at those times. The only thing I would be worried about if I was them now is going up against that fricking Twilight sequel New Moon, but the demograph is a bit different so it shouldn't hurt it too much at the B.O.

While I disagree that the world will "end" in 2012, and that at MOST, a new Age will begin that will lead the world to great achievement or death; I'm down with a good disaster movie. I'll probably go see it.
  • the Mayans NEVER even said that the world was gonna end in 2012. they said that a MAJOR CHANGE would come in 12... people need to stop making up lies.

A tv exec once told me we aim for one demographic-LCD... And this is what this film is aiming for too.
  • Lets hope 2012 will be a good end of the world movie, when they release it.
  • Interesting decision, especially to place it up against a Dwayne Johnson family film (?) in 'Tooth Fairy' and Guy Ritchie's 'Sherlock Holmes', a decision I think personally they will rue. A summer release would have been more appropriate in my opinion as it is simply, yet another mindless Emmerich CGI-laden film which is something that you expect to watch in those long, drawn-out warm summer days.
  • Either way, the movie will blow.

Based on nothing but the teaser, I might have considered it. Having Emmerich's name attached to it has soured it in my opinion. I won't be seeing it.
  • nobody will!!!!
  • Still a great speak.
  • This will not be good.
  • 2012 is another typical disaster movie, of course it's going to be a flop. Disaster movies always age fast and they're never that interesting.
  • Does anybody know what films it was originally going against when it was supposed to be released July 10th? Either way I don'y think I'll be catching this one unless I get a better look at it. The first teaser trailer wasn't that good and this film doesn't deserve my money just yet.
  • Movie '2012' = boring, I'll only watch it if I see it for free...
  • Luckily for me, I get paid to watch movies. I will usually endure even the razziest of films for money. Besides, as horrible as I've considered Emmerich's prior films to be, I always enjoy well produced special effects (eye-candy). I'll of course eventually watch this, but I am keeping my expectations very low.
  • 2012 will be the worst disaster movie ever, and that's a tough crown to claim.

I think it is perfectly fitting that the film should be released on/around Emmerich's birthday! What a date for the ultimate disaster!
  • Jamie Jones
Summer would have been better. Since the trailer has been running for a long time. It has taken so long to be released that I don't even want to see it anymore.
I feel as if my time has been wasted just watching the trailer each time I go to the movies.
  • Name
yes.. your time is going to be wasted and yet your ass is sitting in a theatre for over an hour and a half... im sure the two minute trailer makes suuuuch a big difference haha, its pathetic how much people complain these days, grow up, stop complaining about little shit, and get over it! haha... i win! :)

i loved the day after tomorrow, and i think this movie will be just as good if not better. i cant see why everyone thinks this movie will suck. the effects look AMAZING and i watched a 6 min clip (only on comcast) of a scene, and it blew my mind. am i the only one who thinks this movie will kick ass?
