For awhile, it seemed like plans for an Arrested Development film might finally be a go. As far as us AD fans knew, Hurwitz was charging full speed ahead, with Michael Cera as the lone holdout from the cast who just couldn’t get with the picture (at least according to Mitch). But what does Cera have to say about all the recent movement on the film?

MTV spoke with Cera at Sundance while he was promoting his new film, Paper Heart. Cera seems actually open to doing an AD film, but thinks that plans aren’t nearly as solid as we’ve been led to believe. “There’s no script or anything, so the movie I think is more hypothetical than people think,” said Cera. He also joked, “I’d possibly play the part. I’d possibly put the script in my shredder…I’m enjoying being the villain.” But ultimately, Cera is “very interested to see what the story is with [the film].”

[Head on over to MTV for the full video from the interview.] Despite Cera’s villification on the /Film boards in the past, it seems to me like he’s being perfectly reasonable here: He doesn’t want to commit to a project until there’s a story/script, and something that concrete simply doesn’t exist yet (that we know of). Simultaneously though, Hurwitz has said that he doesn’t want to write the script until he’s confirmed the cast for the film. I guess we’ll just have to wait and see who blinks first, but in the meantime, Cera’s involvement still strikes me as a bit of a longshot at this point.

I am a recent fan of AD. My husband and I watched an episode by accident a couple of weeks ago. Since then we have purchased all three seasons and we are watching our AD marathon right now. My sister mentioned something about an AD movie and we were so excited!! We would LOVE an AD movie!!

Then I did a yahoo search and found this very recent article. I see there is not even a script! And the AD folks are wasting very valuable PR by vilifying an actor, rather than getting on the stick and writing a script. The creators/writers/studio are like chicken-little... shooting themselves in the foot by choosing to go after a principled actor in a very public way. It has turned me from someone who couldn't wait to see an AD movie into someone with too much information about the behind-the-scenes wrangling/bs. Someone in development at the studio needs to get with it and do whatever is needed to get this on track and put out stories getting us fans excited about the movie -- and generating the word-of-mouth that has given AD a strong following despite the critics. It is complete idiocy and pettiness to perpetuate this story.

What is going on here is pretty transparent. It seems to me that "someone" is trying very hard to put pressure on Cera -- could it be the writer/creator is masquerading as an "anonymous" person posting on here - even using various screen names to give the impression they are a bunch of AD fans who think so little of Cera? Anything to apply pressure to him. Cera has chosen to take the high road and be very honest about the status of the script -- the creator/writer/studio has put him on the defensive and is certainly the source of the crap written about Cera. Like he is some kind of prima dona.

The whole thing about "remembering where you came from" and "owes his career success to AD" is BS as far as I'm concerned. AD was lucky to have someone as talented as Cera in the role. AD owes him, not the other way around.

It seems that he is being vilified here and elsewhere, but the agenda of most of the comments is clear. Put pressure on Cera... make him feel like AD can make it without him (e.g., just show some light saber clips, he got lost in Mexico on the way to LegoLand)... that he is constantly being type-cast and that if he doesn't return to the AD role he will be missing some great opportunity and will forever be plagued with regret. As if that isn't enough, they are sending the clear message to him that any day now they can decide to shut him out and he will regret it for the rest of his life. He better sign ASAP because the offer will disappear at any moment. Very pathetic.

Cera shows a lot of character and is looking out for his career. Unfortunately that is what we all have to do -- look out for #1 because Hollywood has a well earned reputation for chewing actors up and spitting them out. There is NO loyalty.

Cera, keep to your principles and keep standing your ground. You are an excellent talented actor and you should not settle for signing on the dotted line UNTIL you see a script. I admire you. You are not at all as egotistical as the posts on here would lead someone to believe. The GM character is so essential to AD and they know it -- GM was the much needed rational reasonable intelligent and well-intentioned character. All the other characters are so self-serving -- GM is needed (much like MB) to contrast the other characters. And your (Cera's) intuition and skill in portraying GM is not easily replaced by just any actor.

I am an empathetic person and I can clearly see Cera's side in all of this. I would hate to be put in his position. No one should stand for such unscrupulous attempts to be publicly pressured and manipulated by "the powers that be". Stand by your principles -- when it comes down to it, it's all we have!!
  • Wow I didn't know Mike's mom posted on here...

Seriously, Mike's GM was an awesome character, I hope they work it out. Just hearing Bateman say "George Michael" again would be priceless. Bateman has pulled off some great stuff since AD too (Hancock, The Promotion, geesh, everything he touches is gold). AD had talent stacked to the sky - cmon guys DO IT, just because it would be a beautiful thing. Ca CAW ca CAW!
  • Really? What about 'Superbad'? Huge mistake there.
  • Trevor
They could have Michael accidentally kill George Michael on the way to Cabo. Tobias could make fun of Michael for it later on.

"Of course. Michael is the big parent expert. Oh wait. That's right. Your son is dead....I'm sorry. That was 100% inappropriate."
  • Cera thinks he's big, but he needs to remember where he got his start
  • This kid needs to be more appreciative of what AD did for his career. He is nothing without AD. "I’m enjoying being the villain." C'mon, give me a break.
  • zach
Mike Cera is just a bad-ass who doesn't play by anybody's rules.
  • JUST MAKE THE FUCKIN MOVIE NOW
  • Before it was even reported, I had a feeling, because he is a big star now, that he would be a hold out.
Do it kid. Don't forget where you got your start!
  • Steve
    He's made a huge mistake.
  • Max
All I know is the movie will be brilliant even if Michael Cera doesn't want to do it. And I bet he's just afraid of being type cast. Unfortunately, I think, that's unavoidable.
But in the mean time . . . . LET THE GREAT EXPERIMENT BEGIN!!!!!

I'd love to see a good Arrested Development movie, but I'm on Cera's side here. I mean, what's he supposed to do, commit to this unwritten movie and plan the next two years of his career around it maybe happening? At some point, the guy has to make decisions about stuff that actually is written and financed. Plus, what if the movie turned out to be more like seasons 2 and 3 than season 1? All guest stars and recycled jokes. Then he might feel silly for passing something else up.
  • You're right about how pay-or-play works. But I don't think Cera is at that level yet. And even if they did offer him that deal, they'd likely have to offer it to everyone else, which isn't going to happen.
  • Yeah I guess you're right but he is supposedly the only hold out on the project. I guess if I were his agent I would seek that deal because if he really wanted to do the film, he would sign on only if it actually starts moving forward with a script from him signing on.
  • I think it says a lot about Cera when everyone else has said "Yes" to the movie without having seen a script. If you ask me, he probably hated being on the show.
  • He should sign a pay or play contract if there isn't even a script yet. If they decide not to make the film, he still gets paid to for it. I'm pretty sure that's how it goes, if someone knows for sure, please correct me.
  • Ben
Just get Justin Lee in and don't mention it at again
  • I never got in AD but I do like Cera. He tends to play the same guy in every film though.
  • yeah, but he's still lovable and normal... very down to earth.. he's one of those guys everyone knows in real life (sort of, anyway).
  • AndrewH
Michael Cera is such a little douche. He thinks he has staying power but once people get over his shitty awkward roles, he'll have nothing to do and then he'll be begging to be part of this movie. Asshat.
  • Please for the love of God, cook up a script, get the contracts set in stone and finally announce an 'Arrested Development' film, or they could always do a final season for the fans...I'd take that as well... :D
  • Andrew
if anything hurwitz should just go ahead and write the script... they know cera's answer: if the script is good then yes, if not then no. so why don't they just write a script? we all know it's going to be good if its arrested development, and scripts go through all sorts of revisions. if for some reason cera doesn't like it, either change it or write him out of it.
  • Oi Vey
I don't see how he has an ego, from that article. He's doing what would of done: spinning the story on the internet.

I find it funny that most comedic actors now are always in this weird storm of backlash on the internet. It doesn't matter who it is. The weird thing is that, with actors like Cera or even Seth Rogan, their films are well liked for the most part. I pray that Bill Hader and zach galifanakis don't get this treatment when they brake through.
  • Bill Hader isn't really that popular, not even after Napoloean Dynamite...
  • Captain Molotov
You'd think he'd be smarter than that. No one else is holding out for a script - they trust that it'll be just as brilliant as the show was. Nothing has changed. The show went out on a good note in terms of quality - that was just overshadowed by the fact that it was cancelled.

    He's an idiot.
  • Seth
I am liking Michael Cera less and less the more I read about his equivocation on this movie. Dude, just say "I don't want to be in the movie." Stop trying to frame the movie's progress in a different light so you don't have to be the villain, as you say.

SUCK IT UP CERA and say "I don't plan to be in the film." Guess what? We'll live.
  • So will this movie end up in the can or do we have some sort of hope that this is still going to happen. Without the full cast this movie will bomb.
  • jfive
Or they could just say they lost GM in mexico on the way to Lego Land .....or would it be lost in Lego Land on the way to Mexico? lol
  • George-Michael a little chicken?? CAAW CA CAW CA CAW CA CAAA..OWWW!
  • Here's the new plan: forget Michael Cera and replace him with two instances of the light saber clip.
  • LMAO perfect
  • His absence could be funnier, true. The explanation for Annyong's absence was great and that branched off in all sorts of ways.
It is quite possible the lad just wants to escape the GM stigma he has been cast in time and again. I mean sure it is his choice to take these parts and how to play them, but perhaps he is starting to realize a pattern and he feels that going back to AD as GM would hurt him. Who knows...

Boy this kids ego is through the frackin roof.

I say make a subplot of the film his death and let's move on without him.

Go make some more shit Rogen films.
  • I think he is trying to make it look less bad for him. There is no way a group as talented as the people who star in and produce Arrested Development could produce anything bad.

Frankly a movie where they come up with an elaborate reason for his absence could be funnier.
  • Apparently family isn't the most important thing to him anymore.
Unless he just confused it with the things you eat.
  • I thought breakfast was?
  • BROOKLYHN
    nice
  • Maybe he's afraid that blogs and critics will give the movie a bad name if it just seems like an extra long episode catering to AD fans instead of a standalone movie. We all saw what happened with Sex and the City. It's smart for him to want to see a script first.
  • critics love AD.. and im not blaming him for wanting to see a script but seriously everyone else has said they want to go.. even Arnett
  • And critics loved Sex and the City. The television show was amazing. But we're talking about a movie, and the critics can't love an Arrested Development movie that's never been made...
  • Yeah, like the kid that had a 30 million dollar domestic grossing movie (Nick and Norah) is gonna go back to what made him a star. C'mon!!!
  • Randy Tortilla
I think the "big ego" is just his sense of humor.
  • Shad
This kid seems more like a snotty nosed douchetard every day.
  • Yeah, they need to communicate better. It has accidentally turned into a game of chicken. Or...someone is lying......
