A Veronica Mars Film Might Happen?!

Fans of Veronica Mars have been through a lot: A less-than-great third season that introduced the show’s worst character (looking at you Piz) and completely obliterated its season-long narrative, cancellation right after said crappy season, and, perhaps the most painful of all, the ever-present specter of resurrection. Like many beloved shows (see Arrested Development and Firefly), Veronica Mars’s premature cancellation was not the last fans would hear from it.

Today’s bit of possible-revival news comes from creator Rob Thomas, who’s currently prepping a reboot of another one of his former TV series, Cupid. According to Buzzsugar, Thomas admitted to ABC cutting Cupid’s episode count from 13 to 8, leaving him with quite a bit of free time to work on a Veronica Mars film. He elaborates:

“Somebody else had to pay for it. [Exec producer] Joel Silver does have a certain pile of money that he can decide on and he called me asking if we — you know, can we do this now? So I know that Kristin wants to do it. I want to do it. Joel wants to do it, and now I suddenly find myself with enough time to write that script.”

Plot-wise, Thomas clarified that he won’t be attempting the FBI plot line that they were developing for a possible fourth season of the show. (You can see a 20 minute pilot for that concept on the Veronica Mars season 3 DVD set, or online if you look hard enough) He mentions that the movie will start close to Veronica’s college graduation, which is a jump ahead several years from the show’s end.

As a huge fan of the show, I’ll admit that I’m excited for the possibility of a Veronica Mars film. At the same time, I can’t help but wonder if Thomas can really craft a film that’s as appealing to general moviegoers as it is to fans of the series. The show depended heavily on complex character backstories, and just like Serenity, I think it may be nearly impossible to make a film that both pays tribute to that rich history, while also appealing to average audiences.

Discuss: What say you Veronica Mars fans, is the film a good idea or not?

  • VM is one of my favorite shows ever so I honestly can't wait to see this movie. And I think you can pay homage to the fans with small in-jokes,etc while still giving the broader audience something worth paying to see.
Also I still believe TV ratings are all BS anyways and that more people were watching this movie than they counted in the Nielsens. (Seriously basing ratings on a small group of people with a certain box? I've never even met someone with one of these mysterious "Boxes" so I'm not even convinced they exist. But I could go on about this for days.)

I thought he was busy writing X-men: Laguna Beach or whatever that crappy spinoff was gonna be titled.

Nevermind that was the gossip girl dude. All CW shows look the same. Rich good looking white kids with "problems".
  • Rena
    ain't that the truth
  • hear, hear. I am sooo f---king sick of dumb rich whiney white kids and crappy TV shows!!!!

gah, Veronica Mars was way too good for the CW and shouldn't be classified along with them. This was basically a modern day "noir" and the writing and acting was always top notch. (and with a very diverse cast) Hopefully they can do it justice if the movie ever comes to be.

I don't know why you hated season 3 as much as you claim to. It's easy to see all the reasons they ditched the older format in an appeal for more viewers with more entry points. Now, I will say that since they cut the season short by two episodes, it did have one of the worst series ending finales.

    I'm pumped for it.

I never understood the NEED to reintroduce characters in a movie based on a TV series. Every movie has a bunch of characters, and it's not like they all require a complete character introduction to fit into the story. Rob should avoid any unnecessary plots that bring up the past relationships between characters (well, at least for the most part), and focus on some new crime story.

The movie would rock, and I'd see it in a heartbeat. I know many people who would as well.
  • I completely agree. I don't think he should go and create the season finale that he never got to shoot or something like that. Let's just have a self-contained story about Veronica solving a crime. Bring back Mac and Weevil and Sheriff Mars, but you could probably dump the rest (especially Piz and that annoying blonde girl).

But either way, I loved the show, so I'll probably see it.
  • No not at all! lol I strongly feel that for the sake of the fans the only reason to do a film is to complete the story and give us some closure not just another self contained story. Oh and my girlfriend says if Veronica and Logan don't hook up then shes hunting down Rob Thomas and shooting him. I think she means it.

Do it! That's all I have to say about that.

who cares about Jericho and Veronica Mars. Surface deserves a shot at the whole cancelled show made into a new movie deal.Surface fans were screwed the most we had such a climactic ending NBC thought it'd be funny to watch us squirm at the biggest tease since....idk. I loved that show bring it back in a movie.
  • I was a huge fan of Surface too. Its a shame that never kept going. That and the show invasion.
  • They should totally pull a Mortal Kombat Annihilation and kill Piz in the first five minutes.
  • Piz can burn in hell. I hope Logan throws him out a window, preferably from a great height.

    I would definitely watch this.
  • Yes, Yes, Yes, Yes!
  • After Fanboys, Belle is really becoming a fanboys hottie.
  • I would watch it just for that.
  • Please, please, please, please, please...
  • wow, what bullshit. Hollywood isn't original or creative anymore these days so now add "TV shows to film" to the list: remakes, remakes, remakes, sequels, adaptations, and prequels....what a bloody joke.
  • Methinks you're missing the point on this...
  • I am a huge Bell fan, and I would watch that movie no matter how bad reviews it would get, Veronica Mars is the Nancy Drew of our times.
  • A truely great show that I think that many people thought was a show for teen girls because of the name. Great writing and Kristen Bell wins you over real quick.

I wonder why they don't go the Stargate route and just make TV or direct-to-DVD movies to continue these shows? I would say it's much cheaper to produce, and you actually reach the proper audience.
  • hayson
Took you guys long enough to report on this.... (story broke Saturday night)

Yes, Piz is sort of a boring character.... though at times, so was Duncan.... but what would a college season be without the indie-rock "I have a guitar" radio-host emo nice guy? :)

Furthermore, I don't see the need to "appeal to the general audience" and reintroduce characters... (think "Sex and the City" movie's two-minute series recap with the credits– throw in a great Veronica narrative with flashbacks and credits, and of course a re-mix of "We Used to Be Friends" and you're set!)

Since VM's cancellation, sales of the DVD's have gone pretty nuts, what with word of mouth and people actually being able to watch the series in succession without dealing with a week in between episodes and what not. I imagine a Mars movie would be perfectly capable of finding an audience, especially with Kristen Bell's star power.

I need to get into this show before I get excited about a possible movie.
  • Wow I am so excited........ okay I'm lying.

  • hdecko
i think a veronica mars film will be good, but the first season was the best and i dont think it will have such a good storyline as that. but i am looking forward for the film.
  • lianneH
I really hope the movie happens if not could a comic be made as the 3 series left us all hanging 'would logan and V get back together' 'would duncan ever reappear' 'what would happen to Keith Mars career' etc it would be brilliant to know these things and i for one would buy the comic and or go to the movies!
  • Kate
