VOTD: The Curious Case of Forrest Gump

I liked The Curious Case of Benjamin Button the first time around when it was released under the title Forrest Gump. Our friends at Funny or Die have put together a great video comparing the similarities of the two films. Watch the video after the jump.

  • aha, good stuff. Nice way to end the night.
  • OH MY GOD! I totally said the same thing to a friend i saw the movie with as an example why i wans't to high on BUTTON. great vid haha
  • Mr.62
That's exactly how I've been describing the movie to my friends--a less entertaining Forrest Gump
  • Michael
It's the exact opposite. A more entertaining Forrest Gump. Forrest Gump is trash.
  • I have to completely and utterly disagree with you. Forrest Gump is far more enjoyable. But to each his own.
  • frankie robards
No it's true: Gump was Zemeckis pap of the highest order, like the Nutrasweet version of Stephen Speilburg.
  • Marilyn
Well curious case of benjamin button is older than forrest gump so that means it trumps forrest gump.
  • Jon
You're friends with the people at Funny or Die? I demand you prove this friendship or be prepared to give up your first born son!
  • Dam that is too funny.
  • Alex
i said that exact same thing, everybody was like what are you talking about

to be fair the story was written before forrest gump, in addition forrest gump ripped off a ton of other movies
  • MartinKSmith
"It's exactly like Gump, only no AIDS." - I literally laughed out loud at that.

I enjoyed Button, and possibly found it easier to watch than Gump, but I definitely get where they're coming from with this.

This is funny but kind of stupid. Sure the two films share a lot of similar plot elements, which all movies do in some ways, but ultimately the two movies are coming from very different directions in terms of what they are trying to achieve. Gump is a somewhat comical inspirational film while Button is a drama focusing on life, death and the tragedy of time.

Neither movie should be dismissed due to the other. They are both god films in different ways.
  • Haha hillarious! Funny or die always provide entertaining videos!!

I liked how they did it with the dual screens of the two movies...fading in and out of them wouldnt of been as effective
  • Great vid. I had the feeling I had seen this movie before.
  • Catalina
    F. Scott Fitzgerald wrote "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button" in 1921!!
  • Zinc
It was just a short story and wasn't very much like the movie, it was just the basic premise of a man aging backwards that was used.
  • Courtney
It is humorous that no one recognizes that this film was based on a novel that was written in the 1920's. Clearly the common characteristics are there, but perhaps it's not Benjamin Button that borrowed a story line o.O
  • Presto117
and have you seen the actual book?

i was in borders a few months ago and they had a shelf of books based on movies and i saw the book, and it was extremely slim.

it was a small hardcover, but to put it into perspective, if you've seen "the tales of beedle the bard" by j.k. rowling, it looks just as thick as that, and that was about 100 pages long, so they definitely took some freedoms with the movie lol.
  • They did with this movie what a Sound of Thunder did with P. K. Dick's short story....except did it a whole lot better. Same title, same premise, and added its own filler.
  • skaught
a sound of thunder is actually ray bradbury
  • Thank you for the correction. I will never forgive myself for forgetting one of my favorite sci-fi authors ever.
  • The only thing Benjamin Button has in common with the F. Scott Fitzgerald short story is the title and the premise of a man aging backwards.
  • That's a pretty good video. I knew there were similarities between the two but that's crazy.
  • Gump was a guy going through pop culture history. Button was a smart guy just trying to live his life. We weren't to concerned with what famous people he ran into.
  • m_B
Yeah, everyone who says that the movie is "based on the short story" and that for that reason it predates any relation to Gump has clearly NOT read the short story. It's all Roth - who also wrote Gump who retooled that earlier movie and added the title and the main gist of the short story.
  • Patrick O'Riley
Now that you point out that Eric Roth wrote both screenplays, it seems that much more incriminating.
  • Jack
i guess its funny since they have all the scenes side by side, but really you could do this with a lot of movies.

Point Break and Fast and The Furious have the exact same plot.
  • Did Peter even like Benjamin Button?
  • Spike Feresten needs to be credited in this forum for creating this video...
watch his show saterday at 11 on fox...
  • Especially disturbing is that the original story was kinda changed for benjamin button, making this seem a bit more awkward.
  • Forest Gump was a much better movie. Did the writer just cut and paste from the Forst Script to Benjamin Button???
  • Gump was WAY better! but Button didn't suck either...
  • Brian Rodden
So true. I thought the exact same thing when I watched it. It's the same writer, which explains a lot. Forrest Gump was better, but I enjoyed Button.
  • Branden
That's why I didn't see the movie. It was like Forrest Gump redux. Why go through that again?

I read the original story by F. Scott Fitzgerald. It was more of a comedic fable then a sappy epic drama.

Benjamin was born as a old man, not a baby old man in the movie.
  • There are some small similarities, but to say they're the same movie is just plain stupid.
  • Well DUH!!!
When I saw CCOBB of course I compared it to F.G. but it still doesn't change the fact that it wasn't a great movie. You can take any movie every made and there is a movie out there that came out before it that was already made.
  • Like everyone, I was thinking the same thing when I saw the movie.
It's too bad that they didn't have something in this video about how certain historical events were referenced in both movies to show the time periods. Obviously this was done a lot more heavily in Forrest Gump, but there was still references in Benjamin Button as well (i.e. the space shuttle going off while the two are sitting together at dusk). But I don't dislike either film for it. I think that the style that both were done in was amazing, and I wouldn't mind if he even did it the same way a THIRD time. It's nice to see two different beautiful stories portrayed in a similar plot device.
But this will definitely be a nice talking point for the future, no doubt about it.
  • To me, Benji Buttons is more a copy of Big Fish, The Notebook and Titanic. Old people flashing back to love stories in the past.

And BB is honestly the least successful in that batch of movies because its love story revolves around two people who lack chemistry and were annoying while Big Fish, The Notebook and Titanic all had relationships that were passionate and quite easy to become invested in.

I mean, even the relationship between Brad Pitt and Tilda Swinton in BB was better than the one between Pitt and Blanchett. truly
  • are you really saying the notebook was better than benjamin button.
  • At the very least I'm saying that Benji Buttons is no better than The Notebook.
  • bahahahaha wow uncanny similarities. Thank you I needed that laugh.
  • Hollywood Isn't original anymore. Movies are one of the fallowing: A remake, a sequel, a reboot, a retelling of classic story arch, a spoof, a adaption of a book or other from of literature, or all the above. There's nothing wrong with reinventing the wheel as long as it is a better product .
  • This is really, really funny. It just goes to show you exactly how rare a new idea is, even something like BB which seemed so new has similarities.
  • Matt
Incredibly incredibly lame attempt at the whole "omgzorz everyting is ripoff!" bullsh*t that's going around. It's by the same writers, any vague similarities would be immediately explained away for any rational, non idiotic person.
  • No wonder I didn't really like TCCoBB. It's a total rip off! :)
