Over the past eight years, we’ve seen that there are essentially two types of George W. Bush impressions: Those that are skillfully layered (e.g. Josh Brolin’s in W.) and those that venture deep into caricature (e.g. James Adomian in Harold and Kumar Escape from Guantanamo Bay. Side note: Check out the range in Adomian’s filmography). Of the two, I’d say that Will Ferrell’s George W. Bush probably verges more towards the latter than the former, although I’d be lying if I said his Bush had never wrung a few hearty laughs out of me.

Apparently, Ferrell thinks his Bush impression has potential as well. Ferrell will soon star in “You’re Welcome America,” a 75-minute one-man show which will feature Ferrell playing George W. Bush reminiscing about and defending his administration. Ferrell described his motivation for wanting to bring back one of his best-known impressions for one last run:

There are people who are going to be, ‘Enough already, leave him alone.’ Or, ‘I don’t care if it’s funny, I don’t want to even think about that guy anymore.’ Or — and I hope this is the case — people who think, ‘This is cathartic, this is good.’” At first I thought, I don’t know about a Broadway show. I don’t want to be just known as the guy who did Bush. But then I thought, what am I talking about? This is a great way to hang that character up, not even so much as a political statement, but to send him off into the sunset.

Of course, the primary concern with such an endeavor is that it’s faced with the same challenge that many SNL films have tried (and failed) to overcome: How do you stretch a 10-minute sketch into a hour-plus-long performance? Apparently play director Adam McKay (Anchorman, Talladega Nights, Step Brothers) was cognizant of the potential issues:

“We very quickly discovered we could do a three-hour show with this character — the more you dig into who he is, where he comes from, it’s really shocking and extremely interesting at the same time…We can’t help but fail in portraying the scope of how much of a disaster the last eight years have been.”

Previews for the show will begin this Tuesday at the Cort Theater and the show’s run will last until March 15, but don’t worry if you don’t live in NYC: HBO is producing the show and will air a live performance at some point in the future. For more details, check out The New York Times article about the play, which features interviews with Ferrell and McKay. If you’re planning on going, please shoot me an e-mail and let me know what you thought of the show.

Discuss: Would you pay to see a 75-minute George W. Bush impression by Will Ferrell?

  • I curse the fact I don't live on the east coast in times like this. I'm pretty sure I would pay for a 75-minute GWB impression. Will Ferrell usually makes me laugh, anyhow.
  • Klaus Kinski
I've known about this for several months now.
  • Alex
you and the rest of the world
  • really? and so you felt you had to tell everyone that you knew? why?
  • I went to a couple Broadway shows when I was 18 and found that it wasn't my thing. But, for this, I'll make the 8 hour drive to NYC.
  • Will Ferrell as GWB is a win...too bad I'll never see it, unless it comes out on DVD or something...
  • They're gonna air a showing on HBO.
  • I can't wait to NOT see this.
  • Fred
    This is news to anyone?
  • Apparently to a film site.
  • I looked, tickets range from terrible ($150) to nearly $500! Too much money for a one man show
  • chappa
my birthday present was two tickets to this. i am going in the middle of the run so i will send an email afterwards
  • hey dave, keep us updated on that HBO special. i'm curious to see how this play turns out.
  • the HBO show will be on March 15th. this was reported by numerous sites in November. why it's taken this long to get on /Film is beyond me.

Hey Dave. Thanks for deleting my comment on the shoddiness of your writing. Sadly it had more research in it than your article did.
  • PiratedTVPro
At least Peter went back and did some research and updated the story when I pointed out inaccuracies in his 3D Superbowl Commercial story...

Oh yeah, well here in the West coast we have...uhh...George Lopez, so there XP

Wow, this news is months old.

I thought you guys were better then this. :(
  • this could be interesting. though frank caliendo does an fantastic impression of bush also. too bad ferrell is more famous.
  • Will Ferrell continues to run every half-way successful portrayal/skit/character he creates, deep into the ground.
  • He reminds me of George Lucas. I see him approaching each successful skit, and whispering it its ear: "Shhhhh... bend over... I'm going to use you."
  • I MIGHT see it when its on tv...thats a bit of a stretch...tis a really pathetic idea! What happened to broadway....
  • I always enjoyed Ferrell's W. It would be entertaining to see more and over 75 minutes they could do so much more.
  • Hurm
I'd be one to say enough already. Come on, even if you didn't like the president, respect him for taking on one of the toughest jobs of our country (and really the world). I mean, do any of you even know how tough it is? The West Wing doesn't really serve the difficulties of that job well. I'm just saying, he's just about gone now. Leave the guy in peace.
  • Probably won't be the best of shows, but it would surely be a fun experience.
  • David, i just thought that i would copy this so you can read it without the context..

"although I’d be lying if I said his Bush had never wrung a few hearty laughs out of me."

i got an image of you laughing at Will Ferrell's crotch. sorry, im bored
  • Old news, but I have my tickets for the 2/13 show, should be fun... His Funny or Die show at Radio City Music Hall last year we excellent...
  • Tom Ceddia
My family and I saw the show two nights ago. It was one of the funniest things I've ever seen. Hopefully he'll have the show released on dvd.

Will Ferril was absolutely brilliant! I loved his performance; I haven't laughed like that in years.
