Just yesterday, the fact that Gavin Hood was going to be filming reshoots of Wolverine: X-Men Origins lit up the internet and created rampant speculation on dozens of movie blogs (including our own) about what his meant for the film. Apparently Hugh Jackman himself has been reading some of these comments (at least the ones over at Ain’t It Cool News) and has written Harry Knowles an e-mail responding to some of the poisonous sentiment:

Hey everyone -

It’s Hugh Jackman, sending this note from freezing Vancouver. I have read a lot of your online comments regarding the footage that we are currently shooting and I share your passion for the Wolverine character and the movie - I owe it all to you guys!

I wanted to reach out and let you know that due to scheduling conflicts with certain cast members and location/weather considerations, we had to wait until now to shoot a couple of scenes. Please rest assured that WOLVERINE will be badass and hopefully meet all of your expectations. I am stoked by the positive response to the teaser, which clearly reflects the tone and scope of the film. If you like that, we’ve got much more in store!

In the meantime, here’s an exclusive shot of some characters you may recognize…

Cheers,

Hugh

[Head on over to AICN to see the publicity still Hugh is talking about. Apparently everyone except Wolverine has something stuck on their shoe]

Knowles himself doesn’t buy the story wholeheartedly, saying, “[Y]ou should know that officially this is what is happening. You won’t hear from any official source the problems that have occurred on this film” (emphasis mine). Nonetheless, Knowles was optimstic, adding, “DARK KNIGHT’s rather phenomenal success is helping the creatives behind WOLVERINE to unleash the sort of Wolverine that we’re hoping for.”

I would wager that having Jackman personally respond to comments about the reshoots is either a genuine move by Jackman to assuage fan fears about the film, or a desperate play on Fox’s part to tamp down the existing negative buzz (or maybe a combination of both). In any case, feel free to continue the speculation in the comments below.

I can't believe he called Vancouver freezing.
  • well he is an Aussie you can't blame him
  • True that and also its winter over there..
  • Madt Kinderkampf
Also we're going through a cold snap at the moment. I'm not sure about Vancouver, but here in toronto, it's been -26 degrees celcius. out with the windchill. As of this posting (2:30am on sunday morning) it's -1 in Vancouver. they may have been waiting until there isn't any snow for some scenes. They may need to be shooting Springtime scenes.
  • You don't know da meaning of COOOLD!
  • You're not sending ME to dah COOLAH!
  • yes here in australia we dont get snow like over in the states. I mean we have snow, but no where near the same amount as in america. I can totally understand how he is freezing over there.
  • True, but Vancouver isn't in the States. ;)
  • You whant cold? I'll give you a deep freeze!
  • Dave
Actually we get a lot of snow just not in the cities.

Australia has the 4th longest mountain range in the world.

    Your fact for the day
  • Killjoy
Yea, like Jackman would say anything to detract people from watching his flick. Has any movie that needed reshoots been all that great?
  • It's true that the reshoots could be both positive and negative...considering the studio was messing around with production and set designs during the original filming...you never know Gavin Hood might have been allowed to shoot the extra scenes he needed...they also had reshoots earlier in the year with the WW2 scenes that made the trailer...so you never know the Wolverine sequel might have been greenlit and they wanted Hood to shoot Japan scenes for the ending...which could be doubled in Vancouver depending on the set..many possibilities! also this isn't some overwhelmed director handling an awful story ala Hancock...
  • Reshoots, or pickups, are most common in all film productions. This one is getting a lot of attention purely because it was announced by the studio (for some reason...) and fanboys are all over it. I wouldn't be concerned.
  • I dunno. We didn't reshoot for "Batman & Robin" and it turned out perfect.
  • It was never common when we shot "Batman & Robin" and that film turned out perfect.
  • We NEVER reshot on "Batman & Robin" and it shows.
  • xxgracfalllenxx
LOTR? every single one of them had a reshoot
  • fannymae
Lauren Shuler Donner said in an interview that was posted on Oct. 8 that there were going to be reshoots in January. These were planned.

    http://www.superherohype.com/news/x-mennews.php?i...

CS/SHH!: And is the Stan Lee cameo obligatory at this point, even though he didn't personally create Wolverine?
Schuler Donner: Well, we shot in Australia, and so we don't have a Stan.

CS/SHH!: Oh no... Maybe he can get placed in the background digitally?
Schuler Donner: Yeah, I know. Oh, you know what, we're doing some additional shooting in January and that's a good idea. I love Stan!

I don't know what you think guys but I TRUST Hugh. I believe his is one of the last honest people in business.
  • Ben
Lots of movies have reshoots while they seem more serious for Wolverine, I don't think we can just assume the movie won't turn out good because of reshooting.
  • Precisely my thoughts. Reshoots are common and happen on almost every Hollywood film.
  • I can almost eat up anything Hugh Jackman says because he is Hugh Jackman, but I just have a hard time buying this. Didn't Dominic Monaghan say that they were even re-shooting a little but also doing a new scene? Plus Hugh Jackman was saying X3 will be bad ass and I still feel the scars from that experience, not a bad movie but (ARGH!) not a good one. I really want to see Jackman respond to the Hood and FOX fights, those have obviously happened since they have never really denied it. I was mixed on the trailer. It had some pretty bad ass scenes like seeing Gambit, Wolverine fighting wars, and Danny Huston as Stryker looks GREAT. But I found my self cringing for weeks after the trailer from the helicopter scene. I still have my doubts about Ryan Reynolds as Deadpool and Will I.AM is in the movie. Also it showed Wolverine fighting the BLOB in a boxing match in the trailer. Maybe these things will work in the movie and maybe Reynolds will be good since he has gotten better with Nines and Definitely Maybe but I still cant shake him yet about Van Wilder. I really hope this turns out good. I want a dark scarred Wolverine fully fleshed out, I dont want another shitty FOX superhero cheesy tongue and cheek 90 minute superhero movie. I'm glad Hood is still on this but it still worries me there are re-shoots, and it is a FOX movie...
  • FreedomPopular
I really don't know what to think about this movie... I'm really not expecting much to come of it, but I'm crossing my fingers that it wont be a huge dissapointment.
  • I think Hugh is telling the truth and this isn't a thing Fox is doing. He really likes the character of Wolverine and wants his fans to know that its not going to be kid friendly like the reports originally thought. I'm sure they have had to do some reshoots for alot of movies.
  • Once again, the /Film comments board overreacts ...

Personally, I think this is why Hugh Jackman is awesome. Who else would respond to this news like that?

Let's not judge the film until we see it, though.
  • Bupkis
Too bad Jackman sucks as Wolverine. His acting along with the writers have turned a gruff, shit talking badass character into a toned down fairy.
  • Syms
Hugh is also producing. So he's got more balls on the line than you'd think
  • igroveman
As a filmmaker, I am very familiar with people's schedules and weather being two of the biggest, least controllable challenges in making any film. Sometimes reshoots make movies better. Period.

if you watch the trailer there is a scene where he is a kid and his claws come out and he stabs a man. That doesnt make sense to me because the claws are installed by the government, right? They're not a product of his mutation. His mutation allows for him to heal very quickly. Can someone explain this to me or correct me?
  • originally he had bone claws that he was born with...the government bonded the metal to his bones i think either bonded the claws or rebuilt them
  • I'm not really too into his origin but I'm pretty sure he has bone claws and he had them as a child. I think somewhere in the trailer they talk about giving the claws back to him through the Government funded program.
  • jason B
these guys are mostly right: he was born with claws (which combined with his berzerker rage bore the name wolverine) and a healing factor.

in fact, professor X summed logan up best, by saying: " when Logan is in action, his body is like an olympic gymnast performing a gold medal performance, while his mind reacts with the intelligence of 4 super-computers playing chess..."

yes i screwed the quote up a little, but the heart of it was the gymnast & the chess genius aspects. i forget which issue prof X says this, but it's out there.
  • originally he had bone claws that he was born with...the government bonded the metal to his bones i think either bonded the claws or rebuilt them...there is a point in the comics where Magneto takes away the animantium and he's left with the bone claws
  • "Please rest assured that WOLVERINE will be badass and hopefully meet all of your expectations. "

    HELL YEAH
  • My thoughts exactly...
  • jason B
i love & fully believe that jackman cares about logan. he knows the character broke the door down for him, and has embraced rather than run away from it. this guy is the real deal, i dont think there is any deception behind this letter. i dig that he is following the online chatter - both good and bad. i hope this cools some jets out there.

and david chen is right about TDK opening the door to 'TRUE' character adaptations.
  • David
I think there's only so much that Jackman can do when there's so many people messing with his character. Fox studios needs to stop humping my comic book movies and get some damn culture.
  • Dr_Gonzo
Walter Bruce Willis. That's who. :D
  • Did anyone else see the promo picture Jackman attached to the email? It had Wolverine, Sabertooth, Gambit, Deadpool, and I guess Wolverine's girlfriend on it. It looks like an emo band's Album cover aka everyone look depressed and mysterious. Also where are Deapool's scars?!?
  • the power of blogging...
  • The over the top feel for Wolverine doesn't bother. Jumping to helicopters is pure comic book because that's the character.

I think Reynolds is an excellent pick for Deadpool and remember, this is the beginning of a lot of these heroes. Deadpool's scars could come later in his life or the movie. So in the film, logistically, it would make sense to happen either later in the film or off screen. Plus he has the capacity to talk noise so his "Van Weilderish" ways fit.

Either way, a dude pops claws, a chick turns to diamond, a extremely fat guy fist fights, a monster fights another monster, a dude can turn playing cards into grenades and a pseudo samurai white boy does his thing. That's purely for fun.

Dark Knight had appeal because the character was closer to possible human potential.

So I would suggest not taking it too seriously.
  • i don't think it's fox sending the email. hug is pretty fan friendly, and supportive of the fan voice. i think we saw that at comic con... i think he really wants this movie to do well, and just wants people to chill out... i'm giving him the benefit of the doubt, cause i think it will still be a pretty cool movie. he did use the words badass.
  • This film will be good everyone needs to just chillout and wait and see.
  • Hugh seems like he really does care about Wolverine as a character and playing him.
So hopefully the re-shoots are to make it more darker and rooted in the Wolverine I (and many other fans) know and love.
I'd hope they cut out the little cameos of young Storm and Cyclops these are really not needed at all and jus seem like an easter egg for no reason other than to tie into the X-Men films of past.
  • This sounds like th Studio creating buzz.
  • Donkey Punch
His email has PR department written all over it.

Actors can't just release images like that. The email is written by a PR guy.
  • paljj
He's also one of the producers on the movie.
