Francis Lawrence Reveals Details For I Am Legend Prequel

A month ago we posted details of what an I Am Legend prequel might look like. Now, SciFi Wire has an interview with Lawrence in which he discusses what he is hoping to achieve with the prequel. Lawrence explained:

That was the real reason I wanted to do the movie in the first place, really, was the idea of ‘What does that world look like, what does it do to you when you’re by yourself? … What does it do without people, without companionship and sound and the loss of your family, without anybody to talk to? I think that’s really what people connected to, and so the tough thing is, how do we do that again and in a different way?

He continued, “I think that to go back, there has to be a truly viable reason to go back into that world that I think interested everybody, so that’s the real struggle…The struggle is to find a story that brings us back in a way that’s hopefully just as interesting as the first time around.”

Lawrence is an extremely talented guy but is it just me, or do his comments at this interview reek, ever-so-slightly, of desperation? We’ve said before that the Legend prequel project has always been a film borne out of the box office promise of Will Smith’s involvement. We weren’t exactly hot on the original either, which essentially desecrated the ideas that made Richard Matheson’s original 1954 novel great. When he says “the struggle is to find a story…as interesting as the first time around,” and that it’s just about “trying to come up with something really good,” my first thought is: If you didn’t come up with something really good already, why are you doing this movie? (P.S. I already know the answer, so don’t bother telling me in the comments). Maybe “desperation” isn’t the right word, but like Indy 4, it continues to sound like this film didn’t come about because of some earth-shakingly good plot idea that just had to be put to film.

Discuss: Am I being overly pessimistic? Are you guys looking forward to an I Am Legend prequel?

(via Get The Big Picture)

  • I wouldn't mind seeing a prequel to it, only reason why is because I would want to see how New York became the way it is in I Am Legend.
  • The Only Man Who Can
nope, you are not being overly pessimistic. you are bang on the money!
  • A prequel to a film that already contained flashbacks about what went down? No thanks. Obviously, everything about this I AM LEGEND sequel/prequel idea smacks of the studio cashing in on a good thing. Which is understandable, but I think audiences will start to see through something as thin as this.
  • Bingo.
  • No matter what this will happen and I'm sure somehow you will see it. I just want the film to be something that we want to see and not something that makes the first film look oscar worthy compared to a crappy sequel.
  • The thing is though it just seems so unnecessary. We don't need a prequel, there really wasn't any sort of mystery as to what happens before I Am Legend, almost all of the gaps are filled in with exposition or flashbacks.

Where's the tension or suspense either? We know who is going to survive, who is going to die, and exactly where the plot is going to go. Thats not a good thing for a suspense/horror/action movie. There's nothing for an audience to emotionally invest in.

The first one did well and now the studio is trying for a quick cash-in. If they hadn't killed Smith's character off in the first one, they would have made it a sequel, which would have at least had a chance of being interesting.

Will Smith said that they were very much going to do a prequel to see how it happened, he said they were alot further on in the process than Hancock 2. THis was from his interview on the chris moyles radio show over here in the uk, whilst he is promoting his new movie, 7 pounds.
  • I'd rather see a Hancock prequel, show him in different time periods and make it a comedy.
  • Yes this sounds more interesting.
  • Tonight, hell freezes over!
  • rcesm
I'd rather see a prequel/sequel, like Bourne Ultimatum: Only this time, at the end, he realizes (because of the recalled experiences that we see) what the Darkseekers really are, and goes the direction of the "alt" ending and lives; leaving it open for a real sequel.

It would've been nice to see the novel realized in the film, but unfortunately it didn't.
  • I like how Franci Lawerance accomplished almost none of those things he said in his comment of I Am Legend. I really hope 20 years around somebody takes another crack at I Am Legend.
  • Yeah, and you know, maybe even base it on the book its named after.
  • first movie started of so good but the ending was abrupt and sucked
  • Screw a prequel. You know what they should do? They should actually make a movie based on Richard Matheson's novel.
  • i totaly agree. you want the audience to connect? why ask what the world looks after and not what a regular joe shmo's world IE town looks like. LIKE THE NOVEL. to an extant the title of the film doesn't even come close to fitting as well as it did in the final paragraphs of the book. at least they could have changed the title.
  • If they had changed the name, the studio then wouldn't have been able to get their cake and have it too. They get to cash in on the popularity of the novel by using its name, as well as the brainless population that will herd themselves into a theatre to watch Will Smith. The best of both worlds!
  • yay for them then huh
  • Oh I agree with you on the fact that there really is no reason for it and that they are just trying to make more money. But like I said, this is going to happen no matter what, at least we can hope for something we would like to see in the prequel.

What would you want to see in the prequel?
  • Of course its going to happen one way or the other, people can bitch about a film at a blog until they are blue in the face and its still going to happen. I'm not advocating to stop the film, I just don't think the premise is going to work at all.

What would I like to see? Less Will Smith. The only way I could see it being interesting is to follow a different character during the event, but since these movies are Will Smith vehicles, that isn't going to happen.

Also, would it kill them to use actual people to play the vampires? I think that would have made the original infinitely better. Though in a prequel, they do get an opportunity to show the stages of transformation I suppose, which could mean actual actors.
  • Actual actors would be a nice change to the whole franchise. I wouldn't mind seeing the fall of New York, why it got the way it looked in the first film. Or maybe Will Smith's character goes over to his families house and stays there after his wife and kid are gone. They slowly change and show signs of the virus and Will's character tries very desperately to find a cure even if that means finding guinea pigs off the street. Maybe show the darker side of the character?

    Just some thoughts.
  • So you pretty much want a rehash of the first film, except with more shots of New York becoming over run with vampires?

Thank god you aren't on the creative development team for this film.

If you want to see "the fall of New York", just watch any zombie/post-apocalyptic/disaster movie from the last two decades.
  • Do you really think it could go any other way? Why don't you give me some of your ideas and see what you got, see if it's better?

Oh and the reason why I would like to see the Fall of New York is because it hasn't been done in any film in the last two decades or at lest I've never heard of them. Another reason to see the fall of NY is because I liked the whole massive scale I Am Legend had to offer and enjoyed the scenes of him driving around in a deserted city.
  • Oh man, you would probably eat up "I am Legend 2: Rise of the Machines".

Now I finally know whose has been buying tickets to movies like "Disaster Movie", "Meet the Spartans", and "Superhero Movie".
  • Ok that's fine, I figured you didn't have any good ideas for a sequel.

Oh and by the way, I've never watched any of those movies.
  • Of course you haven't. Here's a sequel I'm sure you'd be on board with:

Heath Ledger's corpse is resurrected to play "The Joker", high overlord of the Vampires and instigator of your precious "FALL OF NEW YORK". Will Smith dons the cowl and cape of the Dark Knight to stop him, and uses a retardedly contrived voice when in costume. Throughout the film, Will Smith makes a series of dramatic facial expressions to make sure we realize the torment and inner struggle he is grappling with.

Gary Oldman will play the sexy vampire mistress, who defects from her coven to help Will Smith, falling in love with him along the way.

So you want to see "the fall of New York" eh? Thats your big original thought? Of course thats going to be featured in the film, its a fucking prequel! What else is going to happen? Must have taken a few hours of deep crystal-ball staring to come up with that.

Thats like saying "I want to see robots in the new Terminator movie".
  • And Pill can't have a sensible conversation. Welcome back to the troll train pal.

I mean come on guy we're suppose to be talking about actual ideas for a sequel to I am Legend, not bashing The Dark Knight. This is the third and final time i will ask you if you have any good ideas for a sequel. If you don't, that's cool, I was just asking.
  • I'm afraid I can't call this a sensible conversation if you can't even be bothered to read my comments.

Sorry Troll, go back to under your bridge.
  • I'm afraid I can't call this a sensible conversation if you can't even be bothered to read the comments that you've been replying too.

Sorry Troll, go back under your bridge.
  • Once again nothing useful from you. I read your comment and all you're doing is bashing the Dark Knight and disrespecting a dead guy.
  • Better keep commenting Landfill, got to maintain your first place position in "Top Commentors"!

You add so much to the community with your insightful commentary.
  • sure thing, and thank you
  • No problem. ;)
  • How about a sequel that shows that when Will Smith's character threw the grenade he didnt die he just fused with the zombie human thing and now is schizophrenic and likes eating humans and praising Chuck Norris.

    ...Or not... or not...
  • The first half of I am Legend was excellent, too bad they messed it up at the end. This makes me wanna see a Prequel to see if they can fix what they stuffed up.
  • Maybe they should just remake I Am Legend. Why wait 20 years to remake movies, we all know Hollywood's run out of ideas anyway. Remake it now and this time try not to suck it up.
  • When i ran into Andrew Lesnie on a location scouting for Bran Nue Dae he said he hadn't been told anything about the prequel...

So maybe he isn't back for part 2?
  • Hahaha!!! Awesome Idea! THAT would be pretty funny...
  • The comic strip thing on the 'I am Legend' DVD was actually pretty cool...If they did something like that I would def see it...
  • i actually quite like i am legend. the prequel would actually have to show the transformation from city to desolation, that would be interesting. but it would be less dramatic and more like an action film and might end up looking like another blade film with no good ending. not sure they would go that direction.
  • Pill-is-a-douche
How bout this: a reboot of the I Am Legend series. This time make it great...
  • I very much enjoyed I am Legend...even if people keep complaining about the ending! Il be there to watch the prequel/sequel
  • adE
i bet the studio are kickin themselves that they didnt use the ending where will smith survives. hell if they had kept that as the official ending this would be ready for release by the end of the year. set 2 minutes after the ending of the first movie and alice braga drops the blood with the cure.........therefore forcing big willy to drive back to NY alone to recreate his cure. but once there he remembers he kind of sort of made peace with the head honcho vampire dude and so instead decides it best not to recreate his cure, and instead returns back to alice braga to enjoy shrek 3-d (it was still out on hire at his usual store)

leave it the fuck alone hollywood!

    no point................did u get that.....................NO POINT!
  • not excited at all.
  • Dec
Basically the first film had the wrong director and this shit prequel has the same one which is no help...the man cant direct !..guillermo del toro expressed an interest in the first film but dropped out to direct hellboy 2...if he directed the first one would have been much better and the idea of a prequel is just so stupid...at the very least they couldve used the other ending and made it a sequel!..Hollywood just cant get enough money so they are gona make another ugly cash-in film! And they dont even have a finite storyline despite being given the greenlight for this prequel?...its gona be awful... Will Smith walk away now before you ruin your career!.....
  • wheatbread
I wouldn't mind seeing another movie built within the 2007's I Am Legend framework. There is so much potential for a lot of interesting stories, perhaps depicting other characters as protagonists and Will Smith's character as part of the overall framework.
