Fox’s upcoming Wolverine film has not had the smoothest production process. Rumors of the studio meddling with Tsotsi director Gavin Hood have been rampant, and the general vibe from the production has been dour. Given that history, reports of extensive reshoots may be the final blow to fans of the franchise still reeling from X3.

I, however, am a bit more hopeful. I think these reshoots may allow Hood to craft the film he wanted originally, as well as to add that extra polish that X3 was sorely lacking. The initial Comic-con footage for the film looked like a cheesy 80s action film, but the full trailer showed a more epic scope and better realized action. (The Wolvie/Sabretooth throwdown already looks better than his duel with Deathstrike in X2.) The new trailer was certainly helped by John Murphy’s excellent Sunshine score, but it also does a good job at selling the film to both fans and general movie-goers alike.

I’m a big Wolverine fan, and I think Gavin Hood has the potential to make the film the character deserves. If you haven’t yet seen his breakout South African film Tsotsi, do so and you’ll learn why. The X-Men films have always revolved around Wolverine (probably due to Cyclops being a general black-hole of entertainment), so devoting an entire film to him seems like a no-brainer as well.

Given their crappy 2008, Fox may be using these reshoots as a learning experience. Since the loss of Brian Singer (and then Matthew Vaughn), I think they’ve forgotten what it’s like to have a genuinely talented person in charge of an X-Men film. Perhaps they’ll finally realize that studio micro-management isn’t very conducive to the creative process.

Discuss: Do you think these reshoots are a good sign? How do you feel about the project thus far?

Singer made two pedestrian X-Men films with mediocre stories.
  • I thought X2 was pretty solid, tbh. It had a cohesive plot, clear character arcs, a minimal cast (for an X-Men film), and a fully realized antagonist. Compared to the other films, X2 felt far more realized.

My only fear about Wolverine Origins is that it will feature too many other characters. Gambit is cool and all, but the film is called Wolverine Origins. I'd prefer a more centralized focus on Wolverine (one of the - if not THE - most successful live action super hero incarnation we've seen yet) rather than trying to lure more sales by utilizing "fan favorite" characters as supporting roles.

But I guess the movie business, especially with franchises, is about making money though, so I can't really blame them for trying everything they can to maximize interest in the film. I only dislike it when all the extraneous additions detracts from the overall scope of the film.

  • proof that tom rothman just got a huge container full of Ben Franklins from Warners, to go ahead with the reshoot

A proper Wolverine movie would have to be rated R. Just look at footage from Hulk vs Wolverine, Now that's gonna be the movie that will show to the world what Wolverine is all about. It's animated, but by God it has more blood and violence than all 3 X-Men movies combined.
  • Given what they could do with the Dark Knight at PG-13, I'm not too worried about the rating. I do hope we'll eventually get to see a Japan storyline with Wolverine, and perhaps something along the lines of a Western. A samurai/western combo of films would kick ass IMO ;)
  • Yeah but studios dont make "proper" movies they make "marketable" movies...
    is this new to you?

    ratman and bobin
  • THis film will be Huge, re shoots are not the worse thing that could hapeen to this film.
  • I'm finished giving Fox the benefit of the doubt.
  • This film will succeed I have faith!
  • I'm concerned for this film. There were NO reshoots for "Batman & Robin."
  • Troll
  • No bad feelings at all when hearing about reshoots! I think its a good thing. How long has this film been in post for?
  • FelixA9
Hope those are real muscles and not CGI shit.
  • Sadly I think your "Brian Singer ruined X-men" club would be mighty lonely ;)
  • The Wolverine teaser I saw had me intrigued enough to go along to this one, I think reshoots sounds like a smart idea as apposed to any large problem. Reshoots are nothing new, often allowed for in every motion picture schedule. My out there prediction for 2009: Wolverine to gross more than Watchmen - ESPECIALLY on DVD.
  • The reshoots can't be a bad sign. Give them more shots to put together a better product. If it still ends up sucking, just imagine how bad it would have been previously.
  • If it sucks, then that's essentially as bad as it can get.
  • oh no.
half of my is worried and the other half is thinkin maybe they are makin it a little tougher.
I hope they don't make it too child freindly cos Wolverine is not a childs hero he is a tough balls-to-the-wall animal.
Maybe this is the film Fox finally do right ... i can hope right?!

you are right. friendly shit doesn't work with Wolverine. I thought the trailer was great and bad-ass and so far, it does not look like the movie will be friendly. They just need to stay true to the character and everything should be fine.
  • I don't know if this is considered a spoiler...but I saw images from the Wolverine Origins game and he is apparently in Africa and I remember seeing a little girl with white hair in the trailer...could this be a setup for a Storm origin movie?
  • From Merriam_webster online:

    wack
slang : not up to the mark : lousy , lame <while there are skilled moments, there are wack ones as well — Danyel Smith>

Near perfect? As compared to what? Iron Man, Dark Knight, or the I. Hulk?

The casting in these movies was GREAT, I'll admit that anyday. However, Singer managed to turn one of the most action packed comics teams into a bunch of tight leather wearing half-hero's. wolverine didn't even stab anyone until the 2nd movie! By then Singer had already taken jbs at fans of the X-men through dialogue, and in many other ways.

The intro sequence to the 90's cartoon had more character, substance, and actoion than all three combined. rougue can't fly or even lift a heavy object, and Gambit showed up on a computer monitor. X-Men was a tragedy and it sucks they had to use that franchise as an example on how to NOT do comicbook movies.
  • "wolverine didn't even stab anyone until the 2nd movie!"

Wolverine stabbed Mystique during the fight in the Liberty Island visitor center. It is alluded to in X-Men 2 as well during the comical "tent scene". =)

  • Sorry for the typos my on the train and my iPhone word correction is off.

I also wanted to mention that not only did he not "get" what the X-Men were about, he also ruined one of the greatest comic storyline saga's of all time.
  • Singer ruined X-Men for me from the start. It was wack as hell.
  • Do explain "wack". I think X1 was weak on the action, but Singer always got the drama right. X2 was damned near perfect, and I'm sure most would agree.

X-Men 1 and 2 were truly lame. Poorly written, dumbed down crap. Singer has absolutely no ear for a story. Apart from The Usual Suspects, he's produced mediocre movies.
  • I gotta agree with Devindra here, X2 is up there with Iron Man and Spiderman 2 in terms of superhero movies.

this story is so wonderful, i always wonder how things like this can get fucked up when the source material is right fucking there for the taking. just let hood do what he does!!
  • Reshoots happen all the time. It doesn't mean anything is really wrong with the project. I'm still there on opening night.

I'm just glad Singer and Ratner are no longer involved. Anything has to be an improvement on their particular brands of junk.
  • Singer was a blessing to this series and only hit the shitter once he left. Fox has progressively ruined every franchise they have put their hands on. AVP and so forth.
  • I agree. Singer sucked.
  • uh man, i hope it doesn't suck like the incredible hulk (it was ok but i had high expectation)
  • Brian Rodden
The Rat had to ruin the X-Men franchise so now we have to watch this. Hopefully it's good, but this news isn't...
  • It was ruined before Rat-Ner put his sleazy paws on it.
  • Dr_Gonzo
X3 was a steaming pile and I think even if the Wolverine movie fails it won't be the end of the franchise. Wolverine has the best chance of all the Marvel characters to flourish. Arguably he's the most established character in the X-Men movies and one of the most popular characters from the comic -with one of the best actors to take a superhero role. The movie would have to be pretty dire to fail badly enough to mean no more X-Men or spin-off movies.
  • Even with Gavin Hood, I've never been keen on the project. Fox has hurt this franchise in such a way that I have a very hard time seeing any redemption in this or in any future one-offs.
Yup, reshoots can happen for all sorts of reasons, but with this one I think I could care less.
  • So many movies do reshoots for a myriad of reasons.
  • I see the reshoots as a definite good sign...means they saw things that were fucked up and actually took the time to fix it...After watching the trailer and seeing Wolverine attack that helicopter in the air, I've been pretty excited for this movie...
  • But to me the idea of reshoots means that theres more than a few things wrong with the movie, and like a week of shooting isn't going to fix a lot of these flaws.
  • I see what you mean...but I def agree with Devindra on this one...
  • Maybe, maybe not. But I'd rather have them try to salvage the film than just give up on it.
  • Almost every film does reshoots and pick ups.

everytime when FOX does reshoots it seems that its bad news i.e. Dragonball and also Hitman had reshoots

"A few weeks before the release of this movie reports came in that the studio, 20th Century Fox had turned down the version of Hitman that Xavier Gens submitted to them. Nicolas de Toth was brought in to edit the movie for commercial purposes, and Fox ordered a number of reshoots. While Fox denied claims that Xavier Gens had been fired due to the extreme violence in his cut, and insisted that he was still on the project, some reports stated that Xavier Gens was not even in the country as these reshoots were being made. The films' lead actor Timothy Olyphant later confirmed Xavier Gens did not direct the reshoots."
  • Dragonball has been fucked since Jump street,
