Sundance Review: Moon

In the near future, Astronaut Sam Bell (Sam Rockwell) is sent on a three year mission to live on the far side of the moon and mine Helium-3, a chemical that has now become Earth’s primary source of energy. His moon base has lost live communication with Earth and is rather lonely. But luckily his contract is almost up and he will soon return home to his loving wife Tess and their three year old daughter Eve. But as the final days clock down, Sam suffers a freak accident and discovers a secret which puts into question everything. This is only the beginning. What is Lunar Industries up to?

I’m a huge sci-fi geek, so I guess I’m predisposed to like a film like Moon. The film is a throw back to the old space sci-fi films of the 1970’s, and even borrows heavily from Kubrick’s 2001. But at it’s core, the story is WALL-E meets The Island with Twilight Zone undertones. It’’s a film filled with interesting ideas — big ideas, like any great sci-fi film. Charlie Kaufman was unable to construct a better horror film about death with last year’s Synecdoche, New York.

Sam Rockwell gives a multi-layered dual performance. Kevin Spacey provides the dry voice of the robot Gerty, which is an advanced version of Hal 9000. Able to move around the space station on a track mounted to the ceiling, Gerty also is equipped with a robotic arm and a hilarious smiley face display screen. Clint Mansell turns in possibly his best non-Aronofsky score, and I can’t wait to download it.

Produced on a low budget by first time filmmaker
Duncan Jones, Moon makes great use of realitic sets, a remote control robot, old school miniature work, and even some CG. Like last year’s Sleep Dealer, I’m convinced that Moon is at the beginning of a new renaissance of indie sci-fi feature films which will challenge Hollywood’s big budget computer generated spectacles.

  • nice! i was really hoping this would be awesome! definitely proves that you can have good sci-fi without the big budgets

also, is it just me or can sam rockwell do no wrong?
  • Assassination of Jesse James? Although he was one of the best parts of that movie.
  • Interesting premise. Onto the queue it goes!
  • peter,
is the film as gritty and stylized as the pictures released (and the one above)?
they look great but hard to imagine an entire film being shot like this. did the cinematography really stand out?
  • It's not as gritty as the pre release photos, but it's pretty dark.
  • mamer
    It's HAL 9000, dude!
  • scott
    seriously... get it right.
  • Typo, fixed :P
  • Dr_Gonzo
Been waiting for this one for a while now. Most of the reviews I've seen have been very positive. Should be good.
  • I love gritty, realistic sci-fi. Really looking forward to seeing this.
  • Look what you did Peter, you have made me anticipate this film even more... WALL-E meets the Island with Twilight zone plus miniatures and remote controlled robots? I. AM. SOLD.
  • I'm really looking forward to seeing this.
  • Pat
SO jealous. Rockwell's one of my all-time faves.
  • Lee
I really hope we see more indie scifi movies, I'm sick and tired of empty action movies that are supposedly scifi. Give us some movies with substance! Can't wait to see this one...
  • happy to hear good ol' sam still invigorating his audience. have yet to see him churn out a bad performance.
  • This sounds pretty good.

Is it just me or does Sam Rockwell not age?
  • i hate the 'blank' meets 'blank' with 'blank' comparisons.

just describe the plot man, we can glean from that a good idea of what films are comparable.

    and besides, the island? haha

This does sound interesting, especially as the last new "sci fi" film I had recommended, by a well-meaning friend, was Sunshine, which I thought was atrocious. This, however, sounds very promising.. hopefully it will put Sunshine to the back of my mind.
  • Dexter
    Sunshine? Atrocious?! Why this criticism?
  • No love for Sunshine, huh? That's too bad. Danny Boyle can do no wrong in my book and Sunshine is no exception. Granted it had a few flaws, but I'd still rank it up there with Alien, Children of Men, Gattaca, and other great sci-fi.
  • I have to agree, Sunshine was truly a great Sci-fi film that doesn't get enough love. And from what I have seen of Moon I think i am going to like it a lot too.
  • Jamie
Sunshine is a film made for the big screen, I can see how some people may not have enjoyed it at home as the visual style and music are 101% key to the enjoyment of the film..
  • evanz
    Is it better than Primer?
  • I loved Primer a bit more but I dont think most people would
  • I loved Primer, it took me a couple of goes at watching it, but it was well worth it. Such an interesting way in talking abouttime travel, it blew me away.
  • Can anyone recommend any more indie scifi movies? I think Timecrimes is one of them, and I heard it's fantastic.
  • The Signal
  • Primer. Although be prepared to be confused when the credits roll and mull it over for a few days before deciding that you like it.
  • AAAAH!!! Let me see this right now! I saw a few clips on Collider...it looks funny (thanks to the robot smilies) and heartbreaking and amazing all in one.
  • I've been interested in this film since first reading about it here on SlashFilm. I sure hope you're right Peter, it sounds exciting and I'd love for it to usher in a new age of independent sci-fi, void of all the big-budget-popcorn Hollywood expectation and bringing the grit back. Thanks for sharing.
  • I second these sentiments.
  • Id like to see how the pull off the low budget sci fi
  • Or the low budget CGI.
  • This film looks pretty good.
Will definitely check it out though.
  • Wow this movie sounds really good. I hope that I get a chance to see it one day. I am a big fan of Sam Rockwell after I watched The Green Mile and Choke. Also, the premise of this sounds really good, I will watch this one day.
  • Lenny
Yeah but now I really wish I hadn't seen those clips.
Way to spoilerish to be putting out there.
I totally know what happens now...
  • I completely agree. I stopped after the second one cause they seemed like they were giving too much away.
  • Dr. Doc
lots of good reviews so far, cant wait to check this out
  • Dr_Gonzo
My favourite Sam Rockwell roles were Wild Bill in Green Mile and Frank in Matchstick Men. Those movies were awesome and really show how he can adapt to play any part.
  • Anant
C'mon now! No need to take a stab at Kaufman just because you didn't appreciate Synecdoche.
  • Mr. Pendragon

    Lot's of 8's out of 10's.
  • Oh god. Peter you've only upped my excitement for this film now.

I hate you! (in a good way)
  • Shad Miles
There are no words to describe how exited I am for this movie.
  • Count me in. I loves me some sci fi
  • jrice73
SWEET!!! Can't wait to see MOON. A couple of months ago, a UK website (which unfortunately is down now) showed a bunch of behind the scenes production photos of this film. What was shown made the film seem a lot like we saw in ALIEN or OUTLAND in terms of interior and spaceship design and that ain't a bad thing either. They were going for practical effects and shooting miniatures just like the good, old days. And it looks realistic as hell.
  • Bull
I really hope this leads to more indie sci-fi's without the studio influence.
  • edc
I haven't hard of this before.
can an aussie get a dvd release at least?
  • I'm not too familiar with the movie, but there's a game that just came out called Moon. I know they're not related-- even though it sounds kind of similar. I mean I guess there's only so much you can do with a plot on the moon. Here's the synopsis for the game:

Moon places gamers on the cold lunar surface in the year 2058. Researchers of the newly established Lunar Base Alpha are shocked when they discover a sealed, alien hatch during construction of a new lunar base, but it's a shock that soon pales in comparison to what they find beyond the hatch.
  • Ha yeah, better with no CGI than with bad CGI...I actually like movies with as little CGI as possible now, or they have to use it in the right way...I hate it when they use it JUST make a scene flashy than to make it better...

    You'll shit your pants.
