Paper Heart Video Clips

Paper Heart is one of the most talked about films going into Sundance 2009. Charlyne Yi and her real-life boyfriend Michael Cera were able to make the film completely under the radar. I have been able to secure five video clips from the strange meta-love story, in which both of the stars play themselves. Here is the details from the Sundance plot synopsis: “Even though Yi doesn’t believe in love, she bravely embarks on a quest to discover its true nature — a journey that takes on surprising urgency when she meets unlikely fellow traveler, actor Michael Cera.” You can read the extended plot synopsis and watch the clips after the jump. As always, please leave your thoughts in the comments below.

Official Plot Synopsis: PAPER HEART follows Charlyne as she embarks on a quest across America to make a documentary about the one subject she doesn’t understand: Love. As she and her friend and director Nicholas Jasenovec, together search for answers and advice, you get the idea that this new generation’s cynicism isn’t the whole story. On their journey, Charlyne talks with an eclectic array of friends and acquaintances, including scientists, bikers, romance novelists, and children. They offer diverse views on modern romance, as well as various answers to the age-old question: does love really exist?

Shortly after filming begins, Charlyne meets a man after own heart, Michael Cera. As their relationship develops on camera, the pursuit to discover the nature of love takes on a new urgency when she risks losing the person closest to her heart. Combining elements of storytelling, reality and fantasy, PAPER HEART brings a fresh perspective to the modern romance and redefines the classic love story.

PAPER HEART was directed by Nicholas Jasenovec and co-written by Nicholas Jasenovec and Charlyne Yi. The film stars Charlyne Yi, Michael Cera, and Jake Johnson as Nicholas Jasenovec.

I really am not quite sure what to make of this film. Documentary / Fiction / Romance / Comedy...
Whatever you want to classify it as, I have a feeling that I'm gonna like it. :)
  • i agree, i can't really decide what's going on here, but i know i like it.
  • Agreed. I have a feeling these clips don't really give us a good idea what this movie is all about. Or at least they don't give an overall picture of what its going to be like. But it looks promising.
  • Oi Vey
it's great to know that michael cera is dating a totally normal girl (as it seems). Asian to boot.
  • Yeah, I like the fact that the girl doesn't have to be super hot or white. So-called real people meet and fall in love all the time, not just sexy blondes.
  • M
Don't act so shocked. Lots of hipster boys date girls that look like her. and being asian is a bonus. she's a hipster pin-up.
  • The Official Plot Synopsis makes the movie sound interesting...but the clips didn't really do anything for me...I dunno, I'll probably end up watching it when it comes out...
  • Nick
    Totally brought the laughs.

    Clearly I'm joking.
  • These clips are not impressive. Is anyone excited for this? I'm a little bummed that Cera is so negative about the Arrested Development film.
  • Deeds
This movie looks awesome! funny in a awkward way and its a new idea unlike turning a great TV show into a shitty movie...
  • Hmm certainly seems to be going down that partly scripted/staged, real interviewing/reporting road. Not sure how I feel about that from these clips as some of the staged moments feel painfully obvious. Maybe in context it'll flow better.
  • Paul O.
Well, maybe if this turns out as underwhelming as it looks he will jump onto the Arrested Development movie to re-up his cred.
  • Sounds awesome. I love Charlyne. Only talked to a bit through YouTube but she's very cool.
  • The clips aren't as impressive as what I was hoping for though. Descriptions and the hype are what get me wanting to see it.
  • WHAT
    wtf

    good god...

Michael Cera is goofy looking and all, but he should be able to score at least an 8 with all that money& fame he has. I mean, go to any college in America and I can guarantee that you fill find at least 100 girls without facial hair that will have sex with him based on his role in Superbad alone.
  • This is true. You should see all the tail I get as a result of "Batman & Robin."
  • Palmer
Wow...this kind of gives off an Arrested Development vibe, especially with Michael Cera.
  • exzakly
im sick of this indie bullshit
  • I like your style.
  • Chelsea
....You are probably a perfect example of why I hate everyone.
Unless you meant to say "I'm sick of the trends that independent films are taking now adays."
But I kinda doubt that that's what you meant.
  • Joe Kickass
Michael Cera isnt negative about the AD movie. He was merely expressing his thoughts on how he would feel if he were a regular fan of AD and not one of the cast. And he made a solid point. Though, I do want to see an AD movie, the fact that we have three seasons of pure gold should satisfy the fans. That's all he was saying.

As for the clips: they are funny, put whoever cut these clips did a horrible job. Blame the marketing department.
  • Hahaha that chick was sooo wierd in Knocked Up! And his dating her?
Well good on him for not dating someone for their looks and fame!

This movie looks hilarious..."But i dont have no money"
  • Anything with Michael Cera in it i will be going to see, i love how he plays his roles, such a different humour than usual.
  • Burt
Fuck Michael Cera. I'm not spending my money on any of his movies if he's going to piss in my face over the Arrested Development movie.
  • stb247
    Her?
  • Chelsea
Why don't you take Egg and go wait in the car.
  • This looks great, i am really excited to see this.
  • I wonder if he notices that she's fucking ugly and needs to shave her upper lip? Unless he's into that kind of thing... he is from Brampton...
  • Your mom
When your mom shaves her balls, then you can have an opinion.
  • That's what she said.
  • Lemem guess thats what batman and robin said...
  • sunny
you're nothing but a pathetic shallow ass, it's your own insecurity reflecting.
you're caught up on looks that you're missing out on better things.
  • jackie
show us how you look "Pentarix" I beg you're the ugly mother fucker.
  • raptormaster
you are a fucking shallow moron.
  • :-P
you are a jack ass who should never procreate.
  • Hmmm... so Michael Cera wants HER for her money...

    I'm sure.
  • This movie doesn't look to bad at all. I think I'll most likely catch this somewhere.
  • Arthur
She looks really funny in this, the humor seems to be very dry and subtle. Definitely want to see this and Charlyne Yi inexplicably cute
  • Freeze!!!
  • She must have one Awesome Personality....But If I can be serious for a moment, this movie looks like it could be interesting.
  • sunny
Charlyne and Michael are both awesome and hilarious. I'm definitely going to see this film.
  • Would it be wierd for these two if the broke up?
  • LoL, I was just thinking that....
  • I'm interested in the movie, but I think its now pretty apparent that Cera plays himself in every role we've seen. Not to say he's not enjoyable on screen, but there has been no real acting stretch.
  • Pete (original)
snooze.....cera's girlfriend looks like an asian version of clark duke
  • RDT
Is Charlyne Yi missing a chromosome?
  • Kierstin
That's assuming he'd want a girl who would have sex with him because he's famous and ok looking.

Charlyne is an incredibly creative, funny, talented, independent, and beautiful person (and yes I have interracted with her) and Michael's choice of girl makes me respect him more.

I saw a screening of this film last night. I loved it. I had a smile on my face throughout the entire film and my hand over my mouth from laughing so much. The film is able to put a fresh perspective on love. This is a "feel good" movie.
  • Kathy
I just previewed this film in Palm Springs and met the director. I loved the quirky feel and the documentary-style filming. Kudos to Charlene Yi for her style and creativity, and congratulations to Charlene and Nick for their script award!
