Another bit of Scott Pilgrim vs The World casting was hidden away at the bottom of an Empire magazine article I didn’t read fully enough the first time (and let that be a lesson to me - so excited by my new /Film engagement am I, that I’m still all spiky with adrenalin).  If only I’d slowed down a bit and used the scroll bar more casually, I’d have seen their announcement that Ellen Wong has signed on to play Knives Chau.

Who is Knives Chau?  She was Scott “Michael Cera” Pilgrim’s girlfriend before he met Ramona “Mary Elizabeth Winstead” Flowers but she’s found it hard letting go of him.  Sounds worrying, really - what with the Knives bit and all - but it isn’t.  She’s quite sweet about it, though I can’t help but feel sorry for Young Neil, her new boyfriend.  She’s 17, she’s a Second Cup employee and she’s Chinese-Canadian.  So that’s the fictional character… who’s the actress?  Who is this Ellen Wong?  Well, there’s over half of a picture of her under the break. get excited now.

This is the top portion of her head, and the top portion of Edgar Wright’s head too.  This picture, from Edgar’s MySpace photoblog, is what sent me back on my mission to scour every last bit of Pilgrim press to find a clue.  Pinned on the wall, if you couldn’t guess, is an illustration of Knives.

Ms. Wong’s previous imdb credits (never to be confused with real credits, not that I’d know a fail-safe place online to find them) include single episode appearances in the TV shows Runaway and This is Wonderland.

There’s plenty more casting news to come - and some of it will possibly constitute plot spoiler material. The comics series runs to five volumes and we still don’t reall know how much of that will be featured in the movie. Do I want as much as possible, to sate me now?  Or as little as possible, to make for more sequels?

  • Knives Chau is a badass name...
  • My name is Freeze. Learn it well. For it's da chilling sound of your doom.

I can't wait for this movie. The comic series is SO awesome! Plus Edgar Wright is perhaps the greatest choice to direct this movie that I can think of.
Plus holy crap, that girl looks JUST like Knives!

But were you aware that Ellen Wong got the offer only after Charlotte Yi passed on it?
(I imagine not, since it wasn't reported anywhere by actual reporters)

    My bad - "Charlyne" Yi

    @ brendon ******minor spoilers follow!!!!!*****

this is awesome news! but the series is six books, not five. book five comes out in a month, and then i figure the last will be in 2010 - as o'malley has released 1 book each year. the author has also said that working with wright has been so much fun that the movie's influence will be seen/felt in the latter books.

-tidbit of trivia for those who don't know the pilgrim: there is a rumbling rumor that as scott has to defeat 7 of ramona's ex-bf's, that book five's evil ex will actually be twins! (since we already know the main villian/ex-bf who scott will batlle in book 6) but again, this is just fan speculation, but o'malley's comments have helped us come to this conclusion...

btw, i meant the fan specilation was the 'twin' idea, not any of the other facts i included.
  • The Scott Pilgrim books are really great books. I highly recommend reading every volume. Bryan Lee O'Malley is a fantastic artist and writer.
  • I have no idea what this is, but Edgar is directing so it's going to have 'something' worth seeing. By the way. what was the last project announced that WASN'T based on a graphic novel, comic book, novel, cartoon series, toy release or a remake??? Seriously. *begins writing original screenplay in jest*
  • I'm a little confused, Batman.
  • Never heard of these! What are they about

    @ pill

i'm an avid pilgrim reader, like you, and i'm still torn on the cera casting. i absolutely love cera, but he will have to play against type in order to become pilgrim. can he do it? so far, not in anything we've seen - but edgar wright is definately a good enough director to get the right performance.

also, scott broke up with knives & started dating flowers in book 1 or 2 - but for it to last he must do battle!

I suppose Knives is sweet...when she's not consumed by jealousy to the point where she's trying to kill Ramona. And I think the whole "twin" thing being in the next book is a bit more than speculation, since the very last thing in volume 4 is something along the lines of "Coming Up Next: Twins!" God, I'm psyched for this movie.
  • Edgar Wright's directing. I don't know anything about Scott Pilgrim vs. The World. There's an Asian character in it with the name of Knives. I guess i'm gonna watch it.
  • Its about Scott Pilgrim, a slacker musician in his early 20's who is dating Knives (an asian highschool student) but pines after Ramona Flowers, a rollerblading Amazon delivery girl.

In order to date her, he must defeat her seven ex-boyfriends, who each have their own bizarre gimmick. Its all filled with tons of pop culture, Nintendo, and indie music references. The books are pretty much the definitive graphic novel of choice for the apathetic hipster inside us all.

So far I'm liking the casting of unknowns, with the exception of Cera, who doesn't seem right for the role at all, but I guess since he's the flavor of the month they might as well use him.
  • Bryan Lee O'Malley has said that the Scott Pilgrim movie is a "done-in-one" version of the story.

  • More Scott Pilgrim... More excited.

@Andrew is this really her blog? The girl bears some resemblance and is Canadian, but seems far too annoying to be cast, even for a character like Knives. HER INTEREST ARE LIKE SO RANDOM. She also makes no mention of Scott Pilgrim, script reading, or film shooting.
