These days, it feels like more and more character actors are finally getting a chance to step behind the camera. A few months ago, it was announced that William H. Macy would be directing Keep Coming Back with Milla Jovovich. Now, according to Variety, Philip Seymour Hoffman will get the chance to ply his directorial skills as well. Hoffman will direct the romantic comedy Jack Goes Boating for Overture Films, an adaptation of Bob Glaudini’s play. Although word of Hoffman’s directorial debut first appeared last summer, we now know that Amy Ryan is attached to star opposite Hoffman and that the film will begin shooting in New York City on February 9th. Hoffman will play Jack, a stoner limo driver, and the story will center around his quest for perfection, as well as the fellow pothead he falls in love with (Ryan). A New York Times review of the play called it “immensely likable.”

On our film podcast the other night, we praised Hoffman as one of the finest actors of our generation (for an excellent article about Hoffman’s career, check out Erik Lundegaard’s piece, “Philip Seymour Hoffman is us”). I’ll be interested to see if/how Hoffman’s experience in Doubt, another play adaptation featuring four main leads, will inform how he adapts Jack Goes Boating to the big screen. With Ryan now on board, I’m already immensely excited for this film.

  • I will be mega-mad if he gets cast as the Penguin and they don't bring me back!
  • Cool, I always love seeing directors go behind the camera. Hoffman seems to be having a great year EVERY YEAR, this year with Doubt and the criminally underrated Synecdoche, New York. Last year he had The Savages and Charlie Wilson's War. I am definitely looking forward to hearing more about this.
  • gah
I'll be there. He doesn't dissapoint.
  • GrammarNazi
    disappoint
  • hoffman really is one of those actors, i dont have to know what he is working on and playing in, i am there to see it. indeed one of our best.
  • he is a genius.
  • It seems more and more actors are just frustrated directors these days. PSH will do just fine as a director I think...he seems smart enough to do it.
  • Great Actor...Great director
  • That's all you need.
  • Will be interesting to see how he does behind the camera for the first time. No doubt he is a great actor, but not everyone can do what directors do. Looking forard to it though..

  • It's interesting that he is choosing a romantic comedy for his first film. Usually he is into more indepent drama type projects.
  • Victoria
I agree, though I'm assuming it won't be your regular lazy romantic comedy fare. I don't know the play it's based on, but seeing as it's PSH... I'm hoping for something more intelligent and insightful than the average film of this genre.
  • Philip Seymour Hoffman will no doubt be a great director.
    I'm excited! =)
  • he is one of the greatest character actors of the early 21st century.
  • Barring perhaps Edward Norton, he is the best actor of this era. I think it will be interesting to see how well he can make a movie and see just how much of his personality goes into the movies he's in.
  • Brilliant article on Hoffman, thanks for sharing. I'm a fan, I see anything he's in, regardless. I will now skip all news stories about this flick, less something be spoiled, and just go along when it opens and be amazed. He hasn't failed me yet.
  • This seems to be the Hollywood Niche at the moment, with those in front of camera retaining more power and control by working behind it as well. Not that I am moaning, as some decent films have come from this mould (Gone Baby Gone and Appaloosa to name just two of my personal favourites). However, I have much more faith in Seymour-Hoffman, who seems to be rising from a rare breed of intelligent actors who engage alot more deeply with their subjects/characters, and for this reason I'll keep my eyes and ears open to this project.
  • This sounds like it's going to be an alright film. if both Hoffman and Ryan can give great performances, it should be a good film. I also like the fact that they are going to be playing to potheads, that = hilarious.
  • Yes! Philip Seymour Hoffman as a pothead is def a win...
  • I agree, Mr. Hoffman will win som Oscars in his life time. If anything, one more.
  • This man can do no wrong. I'm all for him directing.
