How long have I been here at /Film, remind me?  About 25 hours I think, and already I’m onto my second Diablo Cody story.  Dangerous stuff for a man once told by his wife that he “isn’t allowed” to get a crush on the Juno scribe.

This one comes from a mildly confusing Variety report on Mr. Steven Spielberg digging deep in his own pockets and paying from his personal funds to keep the rights of 17 in-development films under the Dreamworks umbrella.  These films include The Trial of the Chicago 7, Atlantis Rising, The 39 Clues… but not Diablo Cody’s “new spin” on William Shakespeare’s The Taming of the Shrew.  So, what is the connection?Well, this new Shrew is one of the films Dreamworks has lost their claim to. This set of films were lost on a contractual clause that, it seems, demanded Dreamworks to co-fund two projects already in production. Also amongst the lost films was a Lincoln biopic, presumably the one Spielberg himself has been slated to direct for quite a while now and that Liam Neeson is still attached to, though he doesn’t know anything much about it.

Don’t worry, Beardfans, I don’t think Spielberg will ditch the film just because it no longer has Dreamworks investment… or will he?  And there’s even less to worry about - Spielberg is expected to get his money back within this quarter.  Fair play to him for putting his money where his mouth is, though.

There are precisely no details of Ms. Cody’s Shrew so far (no pun intended) but Shakespeare’s Shrew is hardly a mystery.  Should you not know it, here’s a basic teaser:

Lucentio fancies Bianca but she can’t be married until her big sister Katherine is wed, and Katherine can be a bit of a pain.  Lucentio goes under cover as a Latin teacher to get time with Bianca, while some poor fellow called Petruccio turns up randomly and agrees to marry Katherine without even meeting her.  Arguably misogynist hilarity ensues and at the end, there’s a test to see who has the most loyal wife. Politically dubious but dramatically excellent stuff.

Yep, that’s right: Diablo Cody is effectively cooking up 10 Things I Hate About You: Mark Two.

  • Did she have anything to do with Cody Banks?
  • "10 Things I Hate About You: Mark Two" doesn't sound all that interesting to me...but Liam Neeson as Abe Lincoln sounds really cool, I hope that happens...
  • I agree. I never really thought about Neeson as Lincoln until now, but that sounds oddly fascinating.
  • thats one of my fave movies.
  • Jimmy
I really don't care about Diablo's new Taming of the Shrew, but how about Brendon Connelly? What is this, like eight stories in two days? What an ass kicker! Good work, sir and keep it coming man.
  • If I didn't have to teach all these pesky kids I'd be doubling that. Easy.
  • Boring.
  • You've found a similar way to make your claim.
  • SHE SHOULD BLOG ABOUT IT
  • YOU should blog about it.
  • TheMarquis
    OLD JOKES.
  • Jaysun
Brendon Connelly?!? Hey man, glad to see you back on the internets fulltime. Miss your site. I dub you the NEW Patrick Sauriol. Just did it, hope you like it.
P.S. Do you promise to post spoilers on how bad Spiderman 4 will be?
  • MattyMo
Hopefully, if there is a God, Diablo Cody will not be able to shit all over one of my favorite Shakespearean plays. I wanted to name my first daughter Bianca because of this play. If Diaoblows Cody does make this movie, I can't in good conscience do that to a child.
  • Hmm dosent look interesting...btu the lincocln biopic does
  • greycolumbus
I really hope this doesn't become a habit.
  • Hmmn...I am getting a teensy bit tired of Diablo Cody news....I just want to see more United States of Tara.
  • Diablo Cody & Hollywood Shakespeare...good idea ! NOT
  • gah
She auditioned for the job on Speilbergs lap.
  • LOL
  • I hope she doesn't become like Seth Rogen, attached to every picture in the next five years, until we get sick of her.
  • The new spin on an old Shakespearean tale worked best for Cruel Intentions. That was one awesome film. If Diablo can pull off a similar coup, it would be great. Otherwise, this seems like a rather tricky project.
  • KS1
Cruel Intentions was based on Dangerous Liaisons, which isn't Shakespeare.
  • Diablo shouldn't write this, because they already did it 10 years ago, it was called 10 Things I Hate About You, with Heath Ledger and Julia Stiles. that'll always be one of my fave teen movies of all time.
  • for now i'd watch anything she writes. i like her style of writing. it's pretty cool...
  • The greatest version of TAMING OF THE SHREW was the MOONLIGHTING episode "Atomic Shakespeare." It will never be equalled, so don't even try.
  • The Real Question:
How on earth will she sneak a Thundercats reference into this!?
  • im really hoping Cody is a one-hit-wonder and soon fade away along with they hype-pile that is Juno
  • I don't. I hope she'll be around for a long time to come.
  • Speilberg need to make Lincoln happen. Neeson is perfect casting.
  • TheMarquis
I'm going to revoke one of my own man-cards and say that i love 10 Things I Hate About You. Heath Ledger, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Larisa Oleynik, David Krumholtz, all enjoyable.
  • IK!
Hell yeah, man. I'll throw down a card too. It's a funny ass movie.
  • Who doesn't love everything Diablo Cody makes? i really only liked Juno to tell you the truth.
  • If i wake up one morning and Diablo is laying next to me in my bed, i would not kick her out. Even if she wants to have Juno on while we are having sex, im fine with that.
  • haha

Brends, you have to actually *have* a pun in there, in order to have a ("no pun intended") make any sense.

The chain-of-title for SS's Lincoln biopic always came to him and DW via Paramount, so it was no surprise and is no risk for DW to lose out on its co-producer status on the project. Apparently Grey still would do this with SS directing for the Par film, and SS would still be an EP even if he ultimately decides not to direct.

Sort of a non-story, badly reported and explained.
  • Thanks for your support, G-Dubs. I'm fully aware of the need for a pun in such circumstances and, lo, I only used it IMMEDIATELY after a pun. Funny that.
  • Without Othello there would be no Dangerous Liaisons.
