About six months ago, we reported on a rumor that Keanu Reeves might play Spike Spiegel in an upcoming live-action English adaptation of Cowboy Bebop. We’re now hearing confirmation from Variety and THR that Reeves will indeed play Spiegel for Fox’s upcoming film, with a script by Peter Craig.

As Peter Sciretta wrote back in July, Sinichiro Watanabe’s popular Japanese anime is set in the year 2071 A.D. when an cataclysmic astral gate accident has scattered humanity across the solar system. Bebop follows a group of bounty hunters, called “Cowboys”, on the spaceship Bebop. Spiegel is a bounty hunter and a former member of the Red Dragon Crime Syndicate, who is haunted by the memory of his time in the organization. The anime has spawned an animated movie, two manga series, and two video games.

The show’s creators will be involved in the creation of the film, with Kenji Uchida and Shinichiro Watanabe (from Bebop’s Japanese animation company Sunrise) associate producing along with series writer Keiko Nobumoto. Masahiko Minami, a producer onCowboy Bebop, has also signed on to the film as a production consultant.

I think Reeves would make for a fine star in the film adaptation, but is it just me or has Hollywood demonstrated an alarming lack of sense for what makes anime successful in the first place, and how to translate that to the big screen?

Keanu Reeves can only play characters with absolutely no personality. Spike is packed to the seams with the stuff. This is a hideous casting choice. I am disgusted and appalled.

    who's going to play vicious
  • Christopher Michael
WHAT? ARE YOU KIDDING ME!? THIS IS SURELY A DREAM, A JEST, A TEASE.
I have never written, to my knowledge on a blog as this or any other, but I could not let this atrocity go by as though nothing were wrong. I by no means want to disrespect Mr. Reeves but WHAT!? Spike Spiegal for real? Well, while we are at it let's get Mr. T to play Jet. Fox... I hate you.

What ever role you may give to Keanu Reeves, it will turn out to be the best.
He is a great and bankable actor and ridiculously damn gorgeous. :)

Owen Wilson has been offered to play Visious either him or Antony Hopkins

WILL SMITH FFS WHY NOT WILL SMITH AS SPIKE
  • spike0222
I reckon Will Smith should of been chosen to play Spike

Rather or not he can fit the character is irrelevant -_- he SOUNDS the same guys. in Constantine it was changed up -slightly- but he's still carrying the "I AM THE ONE" act. Even in Much Ado About Nothing..HOW can you sound like that doing shakespeare?? ugh...frankly im sick of it. Definately passing this one up.

    Agree with you, Andrew.

And you can quote me on that.
  • Although Reeves constant roles may have less to do with his acting ability and more to do with things like this (cast/crew/directors/other actors must love working with him!):

He has given a gift of several million dollars of his back-end deal for The Matrix and its sequels to a group of 29 technical personnel such as special-effects and costume-design workers for their work Imdb.com - Reeves Gives Part Of His Salary To Cast, Crew.
Reeves supported the Wachowski brothers signing away $38 million (his cut of the films' ticket sales) to cover the expenses for the special effects in The Matrix sequels so that the movies could be finished.
After filming The Matrix Reloaded Reeves had a dozen Harleys delivered to the set as a gift for his stunt men Reeves Reloaded: Toronto actor spent seven weeks on key fight scene Matrix sequel set to open in movie theatres May 15.
Reeves deferred his salary for The Devil's Advocate so that Pacino would be cast, and he did the same for The Replacements, guaranteeing the casting of Gene Hackman.
  • Have you keanua haters actually watched a decent range of his films? Thumbsucker? (he's hilarious in this) A Scanner Darkly? Something's Gotta Give? (terrible movie, but he plays goofy/breezy) The Gift (again, not a great movie but his thug/red neck character is pretty far awy from the wooden monotone people accuse him of) Street Kings? The Devil's Advocate? Even Cowgirls Get the Blues? My Own Private Idaho? I Love You to Death? The Prince of Pennsylvania? River's Edge?

He's much more versitile an actor than his big budget holliwood `hits' would sugest. Give him a chance. And yes, I am a real bebop fan. Own it all. Maybe they could've cast better, but they sure as hell couldve cast worse.
  • a dewd
haha keanu in a film?! well its already failed
  • Spike
    PLEASE GAWD NO!
  • goodeeye
Keanu is an awful choice. I would choose someone with a little more charisma and less suckiness. Someone more like a Jake Gylenhall. No actually, I could see that guy from enterouge in the role, adrien grenier. He has the perfect demeanor, not too expressive, confident, smart-alicky. Ya, why don't they do adrien grenier? And for Julia, I could see Gwyneth Paltrow. I like Mila Kunis for Faye.

this cant happen. one of the only legit anime to have ever been made will be sullied and destroyed by this. i WILL not see this film and i urge every single person to boycott this monstrosity. dont see the film and ruin FOX unless they can reeves and replace him.

    Money.
  • athfbirdwatcher
keanu reaves is the worst actor on the face of the planet, why didn't they choose a real actor like james franco or johnny depp, honestly k. reaves cannot act. i can't stand him he has ruined so many movies for me, the matrix, constantine -- he just sux, how does this guy get jobs he has absolutely no acting skills whatsoever, he is literally bill n ted in every movie he plays.
  • Is this a JOKE ?!?
Im sure they took Keanu because the storyline was a little sci-fi set in a "not so far" future !!!
But man...a Hollywood version of Cowboy Bebop...with real people(with Keanu reeves :S) it will SUCKS !!! (if you dont trust me...check what they done to Battle Royale when they did the "hollywood" version of this masterpiece...total crap of Condemned!!!)

    JOSH HARTNET SHOULD PLAY SPIKE
  • Pinzasso
I literally yelled out NOOOOOOO when i saw this headline.

Vincent Ventresca would be a better choice for a suave tall and lanky character like Spike. And a bit better acting range than looking blank and saying things like "Woah, I know kung fu".
    Seriously. Keanu Reeves. WTF.
  • wintermuted
Even from the show, Spike was never really about range. Besides, in the last few years it seems like filmmakers have finally cracked the code of casting Keanu appropriately. And oddly enough, I just see this working. Again, Spike Spiegel himself was a unique mixed bag of guru and dim bulb. Let's worry more if the rest of the casting is a lot worse.
  • Oi Vey
    Yes, I thin I'm right.

Spike is based on a young Bob Dylan; you guys out there google his pictures. Exact match.

Also, the name Spike Spiegal comes from director Spike Jonze (Adaptation, Where the Wild Things Are). Spike Jonze is the stage name of Adam Speigal. Get it?

That's why I love Cowboy Bebop.
  • Oi Vey
I think Spike is based on a young Bob Dylan. I guess in theory yeah.
  • But isn't he supposed to be Jewish?
  • Colleen
Oh my- I can see it now ...

Keanu : Oh Julia, how much I hate Vicious - I must take my revenge! (monotone voice) (think Much Ado About Nothing)

    Shoot me now.
  • Cury
I'm sure the movie is gonna be a sh*t, Watanabe shouldn't allow this.
I mean, tha anime is a masterpiece, and adaptations have never been good.
    It shouldn't be done.
  • Seriously. Mister Non-Act to play Spike? Fox is ruining the world!
  • I am not a fan of anime but i can imagine that fans would be pissed about this choice?
  • The Philosopher
I am excited, if not for an excuse to watch maybe the greatest anime series ever created again, but to know that the original creators are helping with the film. I agree that the score of Jazz fusion in the series really crafted the gritty tones that the animes story contains and I hope the film does the same. I have to say Reeves is an interesting pick--maybe the couldn't get anyone else--but I think I can see him as Spike as long as he watches the anime closely to really understand the broken down man he becomes due to his past, yet each time trying to atone for it. The last scene with spike and viscous is epic in every way and people are still debating about the ending. I would imagine CGI will play a major role since I can't really see any other way of doing it. Anticipation for more info is building! =)
  • Never been a fan of the 'anime genre of film-making, so I'll reserve any judgement until I see some form of video released, from reading these coments thought, there seems to be some quite strong views regarding this article in here.
  • Christ
No way, they're gonna ruin one of the best anime shows ever.
  • I think Keanu is a great choice for Spike Spiegel. In fact, i think he displayed some "Spike-like" traits in Constantine, albeit a darker Spike. But i think it's a fine choice. Now...what concerns me more than anything is how they'll treat this adaptation. If Dragonball is any indication of the respect Hollywood is treating these beloved franchises, I'm very VERY worried for how this will turn out...
  • Charles
This film has High potential of being a classic. If I were Fox I would focus on this film solely. I really wish studios would make less films per year. It's getting packed out there with all of the garbage films being made. Studios need to focus on quality.
  • who plays vicious?
  • This isn't that bad a news to me, hope they do it justice.
  • Strega
Keanu has the acting ability of a wooden marionette. I do not have high hopes for this film.

    Worst casting ever.
  • wintermuted
Looking at the Spike character and his quirks, this is shockingly spot-on.. Now for the film to be good. It is encouraging that Watanabe & Nobumoto are involved.Thats a major step forward. At the end, if the film sucks,at least the classic series is intact.
  • Aeghast
I hope Reeves die anytime soon.
  • isee
that was in very bad taste. what goes around coms around. so i guess u aare wishing that on yourself.
  • Oi Vey
The sad thing is that his girlfriend died in a car accident during the filming The Matrix 2. That's why I always try to stay classy when I argue about Keanu.
  • Go Keanu! Wow saying just his first name sounds weird.
  • Bleibi
Keanu is just a big, big mistake for this character (or almost ANY character, I'd say... man, you can MOVE your face muscles, u know?).

Somehow, I feel Hayden Christiansen could be a much better choice for Spike. But more than the cast, I'm worried about the movie itself, CB is an adult anime with adult ambientation and adult topics, and it is DEEP, and seriously I think Hollywood is a BIG FAIL making deep movies targeted for adults based on animes/comics/games (besides the last two Batman movies).

And oh yes I hope they don't mess with the score, the music in CB is AWESOMIZING (I just made that up), I couldn't stand a standard action-film music score.
  • isee
I think keanu is just too deep and way too intense and cool for a lot of people who are used to 1-dimensional over-acting characters (who act ina way people just don't behave - not realistic at all).

I originally thought this was an excellent casting, but then I scrolled down a little and saw a picture of what Joseph Gordon-Levitt looked like these days... Now I think they should of cast him instead, give him a goofy "fro" and he'd look just like Spike Spiegel. Still I'm extremely excited because this is the first I've heard of this movie thus far. Cheers!
  • I have only watched a few episodes of Bebop, so im not that great with it, however Keanu is an excellent actor, and im sure he will play the part amazing. Lets just hope it goes in the other direction away from Dragon Ball
