Pushing Daisies to Do a Firefly and Become a Movie?

ABC have a number of unaired Pushing Daisies episodes in the can, with no indication when or if they’ll even air them.  Like several beloved shows before it, Daisies was snipped off in it’s prime.  Between the first season (abbreviated by the writer’s strike) and the second (axed early) the show’s makers managed to bag only 22 epsisodes, I believe - a typical run for one, uninterrupted season but, on the other hand, the makings of a nice little bargain-price box set.  Premature evacuation has struck to the show’s creator Bryan Fuller before, with Dead Like Me being snuffed out long before the fans were sick of it.  That show, however, has been spun off into a movie, Life After Death, due on DVD shelves in February, and now, according to star Kristen Chenoweth, Daisies might be about to follow suit.

Speaking to the TV Guide website, Chenoweth claims that Fuller has the plot for a movie already worked out.  “It would wrap up a lot of the unanswered questions that people will have once they finally air our final episodes” she said, which means, basically, Fuller might be able to repurpose his plans for the second half of Season Two.

Chenoweth went on, “I’m sure that Bryan Fuller wouldn’t do it without the six main characters,” she said. “Paul Reubens was a big part of it - we have certain guest stars that are standouts that we’d want back. But he has such a great idea for it. … We all want to.”

We all want to as opposed to we’d all want to?  Sounds promising, but who knows if that’s what she really said.  Journalist ears can be rather clothy at times.  If you’re a Daisies fan, your best bet to push this along, of course, would be to buy the show’s the DVDs, and also get behind the Dead Like Me spin off in a big way.

Talking of Ms. Chenoweth… she has taken one of the lead roles in David E. Kelley’s new pilot Legally Mad, while the other lead has gone to one Charity Wakefield, seen below in the BBC/PBS Sense and Sensibility.  I know Charity, she’s really lovely and has the distinction of being the only person ever to play on my typically one-man Film Quiz team.  That also happened to be the one time I lost the Oxford Phoenix Film Quiz - but I forgive her for her good work supporting independent cinemas.

  • Any excuse to see more Kristen Chenoweth is good enough for me.
  • I watched the first season and liked it alot but for some reason when season 2 came around, I never watched it. i guess I'm one of those reasons why it got canceled. I figured it had a strong fan base but I think it was just me and some other person watching it.

As for the film prospects, I wouldn't do it if i were ABC. It already doesn't have enough fans and who wants to go to a theater and pay to watch something that used to be free on TV. I guess only the die hard fans.
  • OMGWTF
I agree... best cleavage ever. Can't get enough of that yummy stuff.
  • pleeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeaase let this happen!
  • I hope it goes way of Firefly and goes to the big screen, and not DVD. Bigger budget and a more fleshed out story.
  • I was also hoping the same thing when the first Futurama movie was planned, but I can't complain. Bender's Big Score was fantastic, and I'm sure a Pushing Daisies movie, whether direct-to-DVD or big screen, will be fantastic as well.
  • I think she should be cast in the next Batman. Maybe as Batgirl. Or even as the Riddler.
  • You and Me Both
  • This is a great way for good shows to survive. Look at Futurama and Firefly.
  • I watched season 1 and then the strike happened and then summer, and by the time the show returned I had near zero interest in it. There are a lot of people who love it though so it certainly has a shot at a movie either on DVD or theatrically if people get behind it. I'd probably seek it out at sometime or another, if so.

I was however a big, big Dead Like Me fan. I think it is Fueller's best show. So I am excited about the DVD feature even without Mandy Patinkin.
  • Joe
    I'd buy 7 copies.
  • Brian Rodden
I have to get into this show. I also need to see Firefly. Got some catching up to do.
  • Harry
    Seriously.
  • I loved 'Pushing Daisies" and if they make the movie, I'll def see it...twice!

As much as I liked the 1st season of Daisies (the second became repetitive), I could do without seeing a big screen adaptation. I would watch a made-for-TV movie but that's about it.
  • What about watching a made for the big screen adaptation on TV? Or a straight to DVD film, a la Dead Like Me?
  • getoverit
I would rent a straight to DVD film but I'd rather just see a 2 hour series finale.
  • As much as I love Anna Friel, I never liked the show. Too damned cute and mannered.

I'm a fan of Bryan Fuller, Wonderfalls is one of my favourite shows of all time. I loved the Dead Like Me pilot and the first episodes; the rest of the show - not so much. Same with Pushing Daisies; absolutely loved the pilot, the show - not so much. At some point I stopped watching. It just seemed to become repetitive and wasn't going anywhere. Also, from what I've read, I'm not the only one who slowly got sick of Chuck and started finding her annoying. Didn't care much for the aunts either. And the direction the show was taking in exploring the life of the characters just seemed uninteresting to me. I guess you really had to like most of the characters to enjoy the show. Each episode had some really funny lines, the ones scripted by Fuller also had great dialogues and word-plays, but it just wasn't enough.
  • Go on Brendon. Tell them *our* Charity story.
  • Also, I just feel the need to point out what an amazing rack she has for someone who isn't even 5 feet tall.
  • Hmm Never heard of thsi show or seen it air
  • My wife's a huge fan of Dead Like Me and I wasn't aware of the direct-to-DVD movie. This news will make her day!
  • this could work. we'll see how arrested development does. not sure about the tv series into movies deal. didn't work well with x-files, or serenity ( though that turned out better), starsky and also dukes....
  • The thing is for me is how can they write an ending for Chuck and Ned? Touching is a bit of a no-no. But you best believe I'll watch anything that has to do with Pushing Daisies!
  • i cant really comment on much since i have never seen Pushing up Daisies. But i do know Kristen Chenoweth, and she is a very Hot chick. This wont be such a bad idea.
  • yes she is great to look at.
  • rnl
    that girl is so cute.
I love this show, and am sad it's gone.
I'm not going to hold my breath for a movie though.
  • The show for me became far to repetitive.. and i have no interest in a movie..
  • Is Hollywood really running so low on ideas they are turning to failed TV shows?
  • tyrone
i wish they would just wrap the show up.. give us a good ending like prison break.... i hate shows that just go off the air without a final show..
  • amen to that brother, this very good news even though i'm still saddened that abc is still has a habit of canceling great tv shows, anyone remember sons and daughters? anyway this is great news cause i really love chuck and ned and would love to see them once again.
  • She really is super-talented. Look for her singing on Youtube. She was in Wicked as Glenda the Good Witch.
  • Wow, haters. Why the two thumbs down?
