Pineapple Express Alternative Ending

The DVD release of Pineapple Express claims to have an “alternative ending”, but it pretty much seems like something that was created specifically for the home video release or maybe for an unused after credits sequence button. So what really happened to Dale and Saul after the big climactic action sequence that concludes the film? Check it out after the jump.

  • Chuck
Wow, that was definitely way funnier than the actual ending. It just seemed to fit with the movie a lot better.
  • It is a little too self conscious, but I prefer the basic idea to the ending we got in the theatrical release.
  • HAHAHAHA!!! That got me...I love 'Pineapple Express', funny ass movie...
  • haha, funny stuff
  • I actually laughed at this. Which is amazing considering Pineapple Express barely gave me a chuckle in the theatre.
  • are you sure you were in the right theater?
  • Way not funny.
  • nice comeback! i'll keep my mildly amusing jokes to myself next time. you showed me. (see, sarcasm usually works well in these situations).
  • gah
The joke of the actual ending is that they wanted to replicate the discussion that people would have coming out of the theater. I thought that was really clever.
  • I was surprised that this movie was actually pretty good. The alternative ending here is pretty stupid though.
  • Nick
Are we sure this on the DVD? I checked my two-disc again and there's no Alternative Ending. (Though I did find a hidden feature with Joe Lo Truglio
  • This is one of the three or four easter eggs on the DVD.
  • I didn't really like Pineapple Express, i think Forgetting Sarah Marshall was funnier. Franco was funny but Seth couldn't get me to laugh and it felt a tad bit too long for the story. I like this ending better because it made me laugh.
  • well, it's pretty funny.
but for sure it's made specially for dvd
  • That's really hilarious. I knew they were going to do something other than sit there and look dead.

It's a good thing they didn't add that so we could possibly get a sequel.
  • Wow...that was really bad...just like the whole film
its pathetic...unless watched high i suppose
  • Alternative endings ruin everything. While I much preferred the ending in the script (Saul and Dale getting high and running around in the forest chasing invisible bad guys with Red), the theatrical just hits the right tone. That would have just been too dark.
  • Palmer
<sarcasm> But everyone loves dark films now! The studios told us so! </sarcasm>
  • joshi38
Especially after The Dark Knight! That even had Dark in the title. Everything needs to be darker and grittier now!
  • Yeah didnt you ehar? Sam Ramis changing the Title to the Dark Spider
  • joshi38
Hell, that's the real reason Disney let go of the Narnia films, the screenwriters wouldn't agree to having the kids all taking blow and having casual sex, you know, to give it a more gritty realistic feel.
  • Haha...or instead of going through the wardrobe to narnia...each of the kids take magic mushrooms.....
  • Palmer
So, would that mean that everything about Narnia and all of their adventures was a result of a bad drug trip?
  • Palmer
So, would that mean that everything about Narnia and all of their adventures was a result of a bad drug trip? That would actually be a believable plot....we must tell the world!
  • SHHHH dont tell the Wayan Brothers they might get an idea...

oh wait they already made epic movie....
  • haha
  • Franco is fantastic is everything he does.
  • agreed... he's a very good (but underrated) actor... I think he got a good promising future ahead of himself
  • Right on. Have you seen "Acting with James Franco" over at Funny or Die? It is some hilarious stuff. They guy deserves more credit. I hope he gets a really juicy role soon.
  • TheMarquis
I disagree. He's horribly wooden in the Spider Man films.
  • Chelsea
That wasn't his fault. If you notice, everyone (even the really respected actors) sucked in the Spider Man series. It was an aesthetic they were going for that really didn't translate into the movies well.
  • As disappointing as the rest of the film.
  • Sean
Pineapple Express was a massive disappointment. The trailer ruined the movie experience. Seth Rogen has let all the fame go to his head, he seems to be in every movie now. Does anyone agree with me?
  • This was a funny movie, and seeing this clip makes me wanna watch the film again. Smoke up, and a have a good laugh
  • Chelsea
I think the main reason why I loved this movie so much was because I (as a smoker) could relate to so many of the jokes. The same is true of Superbad, which I also loved, but about which my boyfriend said, "You'll never be able to truly love this as much as guys like me, who were in this exact same situation in high school." I think people that don't like Pineapple Express just can't quite get into this sort of humor, which is so real. Everything in this (and other Rogen/Apetow) film seemed like something myself or my friends would say, if we were ever in these situations.

My point is: If you didn't like Pineapple Express, I guess you don't have really witty friends that smoke pot all the time, and I'm really sorry to hear that.

I think the "alternative" ending is good, but just as a little Easter Egg for the DVD and not for much else.

P.S. I think Rogen should be in every movie ever, so I don't mind how much exposure he's getting now. He definitely earned it, from stand-up to acting in Freaks and Geeks to writing for Da Ali G Show and now producing, writing and acting. I think he deserves the fame he's getting more than most other celebrities. He started out doing some of the most difficult parts of the movie business before being a well-known actor.
  • That was great. LOL
  • This movie was so great. I can't believe all the negative comments about this movie. Maybe we've had too many great comedies this year, but I think this is one of the best that came out in 2008. I'm looking forward to re-watching it this weekend.
  • CMAD
    Bro-Mo-Sexual!!!!

    love this movie soo much
  • They remind me of Batman and Robin from the movie "Batman & Robin."
  • Too much worshiping of drugs.
  • Chelsea
It's not "worshiping" as much as "appreciating."
It's just a movie that portrays drugs in the way that they are actually used by a lot of people today.
    It's just realistic.
  • Being a user is not realistic. Being a vegetarian is!
  • this would have been great in the movie....shoulda kept it.
  • DRock
How could this be an alternate ending when the building they are in was on fire and soon to explode by the time they met back up?

I don't like it anyway, there's no way that they viewing public could come to terms with them dying like that...or at least I couldn't.

I thought overall the movie was enjoyable, but forgettable, with one exception, James Franco. I fully expected to hate this movie because of him, but his performance was awesome! I am a fan now.
  • i don't really see this as an "alternate ending" as much as a "hey, we've some some extra squibs left over, lets shoot the two main characters up and throw it on the dvd" idea.
  • At least this is better than the Eagle Eye alternate ending.
  • Then again, pretty much everything in general was better than Eagle Eye.
  • HBKDinobot
I enjoyed Pineapple Express a lot... but if I remember correctly they were both covered in dirt and blood and in this "alternate ending" they both look totally clean. I call shenanigans or at the very least bad continuity.
