TV Review: 24 Season 7 Premiere - What Did You Think?

[The following contains spoilers for the first 4 episodes of 24: Season 7]

It’s been a little bit over 18 months since the last season of 24 (not counting 24: Redemption) and after the general awfulness of Season 6, I was quite concerned that one of my once-favorite television shows had lost its magic for good. With the first four hours of the current season now past us, I wondered: Does 24 still have it? Kind of.

The new season has ex-special agent Jack Bauer (Kiefer Sutherland) being forced to testify before a Senate Committee to answer for his questionable counter-terrorism tactics. After giving an impassioned defense of his interrogation techniques, he’s whisked off to the FBI by agent Walker (Annie Wersching) to help stop a major threat to the country’s technology infrastructure. The man behind the threat? None other than Jack’s old colleague Tony Almeida (Carlos Bernard), believed to have been killed in Season 5 [Update: Corrected]. In the meantime, newly elected President Allison Taylor (Cherry Jones) is readying an invasion of fictional African country Sangala to stop the genocide being perpetrated by General Juma, who has a few world-ending tricks up his sleeve, all while her husband, Henry, is trying to get to the bottom of his son’s supposed suicide.

Despite a drastic change in setting - after 6 years in LA and a 2-hour TV movie in Africa, the new season is set in Washington D.C. - this season so far still has all the staples of the 24 we all know and love-hate: The petty office bickering, the nonsensical computer terminology, the relentless and constant revelations of moles in both criminal and governmental organizations, and of course, the badass action scenes. If you weren’t fan of these things before, you won’t be fans of them now, but die-hard 24 fans such as myself feel like an old friend has finally come home for a visit after an 18-month exile.

What’s more, I’m finding myself a fan of the new elements that this season has introduced. Wersching is convincing and spellbinding as Agent Walker, a Dana Scully for the 21st century, although her turn to the dark side seems to a bit too quick for my taste. (After taking a strong stance against torture initially, she was basically signing off on Jack’s extreme techniques within an hour of meeting him for the first time!). I don’t know if her character will have a plausible arc but I’m content to just watch her do her thing. Remarkably, Tony’s return from the dead actually makes a modicum of sense, as much as anything else in this show at least; after all, 24 once literally killed off its main character, only to bring him back an episode later. I also love the use of Washington D.C. as a location for the new season. The D.C. area is beautifully photogenic and while the constant presence of landmarks occasionally seems like the producers are shoving it in our faces, the non-LA setting and the way it’s vividly rendered makes this new season seems more alive, exciting, and unpredictable than any other season in recent years.

In addition, I actually found myself appreciating the show’s views on torture this time around. While it’s been said before that 24 has actually influenced how our real-life troops interrogate enemy combatants (almost unquestionably for the worse), this season actually presents opposing viewpoints on the matter, with Jack outwardly defiant but inwardly believing that the American people deserve an accounting for his actions. It’s a duality that has a lot of potential, but knowing 24 that means we probably won’t hear about it again until the end of the season, if we hear about it again at all.

The end of the fourth episode has Jack and Tony suiting up undercover to take down the terrorists-for-hire from the inside, while Buchanan QB’s the situation from his attic somewhere. In any other show, this would be a compelling, edge-of-your-seat development but at this point, 24 has put Jack Bauer in so many outlandish and preposterous situations that undercover terrorist takedown seems like old hat. Maybe, though, for one redemptive season, doing what comes naturally and delivering on the promise of its earlier years is all that 24 needs to get back on its feet again.

Discuss: What did you think of the 4-hour season premiere of 24? (Spoilers for first 4 eps allowed but please don’t reveal any information on future episodes)

  • Ben
I really liked the 4 hour premiere of 24 this season but part of me keeps thinking if last season had not happened would I still have liked it as much?
  • I'm waiting for the return of the syntox nerve gas.
  • i'm still waiting for michelle and palmer to come back from the dead and for kim to finally die from that syntox nerve gas you badly want to return.
  • Brian Rodden
24 rules. I love that Almeida is back. He's one of the only characters, besides Palmer, who can/could keep Jack in line. He needs that every now and then because he's just a "wildcard"...
  • I AM THE MOLE
I was rolling my eyes at how fast the got to the part about there being a mole but i suppose the overall story wasn't too bad. I hope they don't need to dwell on the fact that Jack likes to torture people.
  • My main concern is that the first four hours of Season Six also were pretty damn good. And look what happened. I have high hopes, but falling back on an old canard like a mole in the FBI (instead of CTU) ... sigh.
  • No, I think the ENTIRE gov't will be corrupted and in need of destruction. The Founding Fathers were well aware that this gov't could turn rogue at any time; the Constitution explicitly states that we have a DUTY to overturn the gov't if this happens. I think that's the plot line for this season.
  • Palmer
    Janeane Garofalo makes it tolerable.
  • tekjock
DISAGREE ... Her charicter was ANOYING AS HELL
  • agree that you disagree she's really annoying, she's like chloe on crack.
  • Nina Meyers
She's dumber than Chloe though. Much dumber.
  • jamie
tony and jack are back as an awesome duo which is great but (i may be alone in this) i dislike the renee walker character; her character seems way too artificial and convenient for the series
  • Annie Wersching is awesome. And hot.

    So far, so good.
  • But only if you're a lesbian.

Am I the only one that got a little confused when the guy that got kidnapped was able to create the technical device that are able to take over any plane in the air in about 5 minutes??
  • HoopersX
I had been think the same thing. Since the show is in "realtime", they kidnap him, drive him to their hideout and he slaps the thing together all inside about 15 minutes. DAMN!

Also, was I the only one that noticed Billy Walsh (Rhys Coiso), the obnoxious director from Entourage as one of the FBI analysts? I didn't even recognize him unitl I heard him talk, then I was waiting for him to call someone SUIT!!
  • I was totally satisfied with the first 4 hrs. Annie Wersching is very good and a solid edition to the show!
  • I also really enjoyed the first 4 hours of 24 and glad its back on as well. The themes of the show seem really interesting. The most interesting one I seem is obligations of a super power vs obligations of being a head of state for the people. Furthermore, I wanna see how far Jack will let the people an country suffer to find out who is the mole. Trying to pack alot into 1 day but at least it seems plausible unlike previous seasons.
  • Maracle
    I miss Edgar
  • dickie
I might have cried at his death… maybe….
  • me too - Chloe Edgar was the best tag team
makes me sad when i see the actor without the lisp
  • check out The Spirit. He's in it, lisping things up
  • Lori
Actually I do to.....He and Chloe had a great friendship going......
  • I was very surprised at the 4-hour premier. Especially after the awful season 6 and the atrociously boring Redemption. Let's just hope they can keep this excitement up.
  • grid blyton
Redemption was terrible, but so far this season has been good. Tony is awesome, but he 'died' in season 5, not 4
  • I could never get into 24.
  • I stopped watching 24 a few uears ago...its lost its magic
  • I thought this season started off slowly but picked up in hours 3 and 4. I like it so far but am waiting for the moment in every season that jumps the shark. I've missed the 'guess the mole' and the new characters seem to fit well. A lot can happen in the next 20 hours though.
  • This new season of 24 is preeeety boring.I only continue to watch the show bc I can never abandon a TV series before it's over. I mean I still watch Prison Break. Thank god that shit has been canceled. I feel so relieved you dont' even know.

I was reminded of Batman so much during the first four episodes. Jack Bauer is Batman, someone who works outside the law, for the good of the people, and the FBI is the Gotham City Police Department, they have to work inside the law. Then the FBI has to fight this enemy who has no mercy, so they have to think about having to break their rules. I totally thought about the Joker when he said, "you're going to have to break your one rule".
They even had an interrogation scene, with Jack Bauer losing it and pushing him against the wall shouting. "Where is it!" a la Batman hitting the Joker against the wall shouting "Where are they!".
  • dan
I noticed the same similarities to the Dark Knight when I was watching. I think pushing a hero to the limits is interesting. I hope they can continue these themes throughout the season.
  • jrice73
Yes, I totally saw the Bauer as BATMAN take in these four episodes as well. But what I always liked about 24 was the fact that it seemed like a real world or poor man's METAL GEAR SOLID without the giant mechs. Bauer is Snake, Chloe is Otacon (Hal Emmerich) etc... Even the crazy ass, far reaching government conspiracies harken to the world of METAL GEAR. And the first four episodes of season 7, remind me of how SONS of LIBERTY opens. Snake and Otacon are working outside the government because they know they cannot trust it. Just like Bauer and Co. Just my 2 cents...
  • I personally enjoyed it. I think that it has the Die Hard IV edge to it, with the modulator that can kill us all, and how it ties into Redemption as well. I think the whole "there are moles everything" thing is really old, but I believe that Anne has played great thus far, and that this season has a lot of potential to be awesome.
  • static212
uh david how long have you been a fan of 24? cause tony died in season 5 not 4 jack faked his death in season 4....... anyways I being the hardcore 24 fan i have been since season 1.... I have to say season 7 is starting off very strong just hope it doesn't take the huge nose dive it took midway through season 6..... and the red head HOTTT!!!!!! something tells me jack has a possible new love interest in his life....
  • After last years joke of a season, I cant see going back. I will watch it on DVD.
  • jambot
24 just keeps regurgitating the same plot over and over again. I wanted Tony to actually be a bad guy and not to be working for the Juma people. Why can't they just have some crazy ass American who wants to blow up the government, why does there always have to be a foreign puppet master waiting in the wings!

Unfortunately, I will be forced to ewatch the other 20 hours of this POS. I can only hope the buck the formula and try to show us something we haven't seen before.
  • Nina Meyers
The fact that you complain but yet you will be watching all 24 hours is proof that this show is a success...
  • roxxe
love it that the annoying director from entourage plays an annoying dataminer
  • Mostskillz
24 is off to a good start albeit a giant plot hole that bugged me in the 4th hour. So far it's on par. Hopefully it doesn't take a season 6 tumble midway through.
  • John
I thought 24 rocked! Those 4 hours of TV were hands down better than what Heroes gave us all this season so far. I'll be switching to 24 on Mondays now.
  • The supporting cast is amazing
  • Jack>You
The new season is pretty much awesome. I knew it would be at least tolerable after all of the DC scenes in Redemption were good (or at least looked good next to the Sangala scenes that even Robert Carlisle couldn't save). Great cast, a lot more recognizable actors, especially Jon Voight will be sweet. The Tony-Jack combo again except for led by Buchanon as a rouge anti-government corruption group should be amazing, and at least all of the stereotypes of 24 that we know and love/hate aren't set in CTU anymore.
PS, did anyone else call exactly what was going to happen with Tony from the season prequel trailers? I mean, seriously, did you really think he was going to be a minor bad guy? No way in hell
  • Lori
No I didn't think and still don't think that Tony could ever be the bad guy that it was first made out to be, no matter what has happened to him or what he's lost over the years.....He knows right from wrong and is loyal to the end!!!!
  • Tommy Metropolis
I really enjoyed it. Having "the old school 4" all working together undercover seems bad a**. (jack, tony, chloe, buchanan)

just waiting for the episode where one of them dies suddenly.. LOL JK theyll BRB.
  • Intrigued is the best way I can describe it. After the highs of Season 5 and the lows of Season 6, I'm going into this Day 7 with as much trepidation as excitement. Arguably, the best part of 24 is the season premiere (when you get 4 hours of Jack and the set-up for the carnage to come....and there will be carnage. Best believe that).

At some point, if we're going to have Sen. Redd Forman blast at Jack Bauer, it'd be nice to hear Jack blast back about how he's been tortured, beaten, shot, abused and abandoned all in the name of his country.
  • I think the guy playing almeida doesnt change facial expressions much, but otherwise the show is off to a great start. Really feeling it so far.
  • John, I'm in TOTAL agreement with you! I was totally surprised at the twist about Tony's motive, (I may be alone in this, but oh well) because I feel for the trap through the trailers and official magazine noting Tony as the bad guy. I love the script, the characters, and interwoven storylines. But like someone said earlier, Season 6 also started out awesomely, but they didn't pick it back up too much after that. But now, 24 has everything to prove and they've heard what the fans didn't like about the last season. I have faith in them, they've changed alot of the things that were constants in the previous seasons. I'm optimistic and I will tune in every single Monday. I DVR'd the first 4 episodes, I'm gonna watch them again this weekend!
  • I am one of those people who though Season 6 was decent, but could have been better. It was a let down after Season 5.

This new season has restored my faith in 24 being great television. With the return of Tony, and Bill and Chloe I feel like I have my old friends back, especially since they're now working underground as their own little CTU. I like that we have a new FBI type setting and that we're not in LA anymore. Not that those things were bad, but it is good to have a new location, and our heroes having to fight terrorism underground without the help of CTU. It gives the show a freshness to it and makes things more challenging for our beloved characters.
  • Tekjock
Agreed, Like the fact that Tony is back, Alwaysone of my favs on the show, along with Palmer and Bill Buchanan
  • AND Chloe.
