Samuel L. Jackson May Not Be Nick Fury?!

These are troubling times for America—unemployment is on the rise, and entire industries face their end—but one thing we geeks have had to look forward to in the next few years is everyone’s favorite bad motherfucker himself, Samuel L. Jackson, as Nick Fury. Now it seems we may even be robbed of that one slice of happiness. In an interview today over at the LA Times blog Hero Complex, Jackson hints that all is not well at Marvel, and that his role as Nick Fury is anything but a sure thing at this point.

In response to the character’s appearance in Iron Man 2, Captain America, and The Avengers, he says that the role may be recast (with a cheaper actor of course), or Fury may not appear at all. Jackson elaborates further:

I saw ['Iron Man' and 'Iron Man 2' director] Jon Favreau at the Scream Awards and we had a conversation. He said, ‘I hope things are working out for you because we’re writing stuff for you.’ Then all of a sudden last week I talked to my agents and manager and things aren’t really working that well.

There was a huge kind of negotiation that broke down. I don’t know. Maybe I won’t be Nick Fury. Maybe somebody else will be Nick Fury or maybe Nick Fury won’t be in it. There seems to be an economic crisis in the Marvel Comics world so [they're saying to me], ‘We’re not making that deal.’

Of course Marvel is not alone in the economic crisis, but they certainly seem to enjoy kicking their fans in the balls when it comes to cutting costs. First we had Terrence Howard replaced with Don Cheadle in Iron Man 2, and now this?

I’ll save my unfiltered vitriol for further developments on this news, but for now I’ll say this: There should be no discussion Marvel. Samuel L. Jackson is the best actor for the role (the resemblance of Ultimates Nick Fury to Jackson is what we in the biz call a big fucking hint). And if it’s a cost issue, I suggest you look back at the release of Iron Man and see just how much audiences were excited by Jackson’s 10 seconds of screen time.

Getting him in the future Marvel films at this point should be your top priority. Lose him, and you’ll lose much of the goodwill you’ve built up this year.

Discuss: How awesome of an idea is this, folks?

get wesley snipes.......wonder how that will go...
  • we would have to wait a few years for him to get out of jail.

Personally I cannot stand Sam Jackson anymore, I liked the old Nick Fury better. Jackson is so over saturated he is just annoying now. He is great in some roles, but he is not right for everything.

I was never crazy about Marvel changing the Nick Fury character, it was a mistake on there part. They are idiots basically!
  • So you like the Hoff playing Mr. Fury?
  • this is terrible news, i hope it's not going to go down like this.
  • Since negotiations are still "Active" according to Marvel, I'm pretty sure this is just a negotiations tactic. HE gets the fans in an uproar so Marvel can see how much everyone loves him and soon they offer to pay him enough to keep him.
Good for you Sam L. I hope it works out.
  • israelidude
WHO CARES!!! sam jackson is a horrible actor!!!
  • IsraeliDude, I agree. Also, you should talk to ANGRYBROOMSTICK because she is pushing for the end of Israel. True story.
  • Tom
I thought the extra scene at the end of Iron Man was really lame, mostly because it was Sam Jackson. It felt as bad or worse than seeing him as a Jedi in Star Wars. Here's hoping they hire an unknown instead.
  • This has nothing to do with the economic crisis. I know some people who have worked with Marvel and they know from experience that Marvel is CHEAP. It's their way or a no go.
  • Jackson has to be Fury at this point. Marvel just needs to pay him what he wants and get it all bake at the box office.
  • Nick Fury = Jackson

End of story, Marvel don't be stupid
  • Joe Q.
Terrence Howard was the worst part of Iron Man and the only actor who should play Nick Fury is David Hasselhoff
  • you are racist
  • Andrew Aiello
which reminds me wayne brady would make an awesome robin.
  • I agree.
  • macks
Get Terrence Howard to Play Nick Fury.
  • macks
    Oops, SUNand3Stars already said this.

Get Don Cheadle to play Nick Fury.
  • Name
Please, he sucked in Iron Man. Remember the part when he comes to Tony's house to rescue him, calling, "Tony! Tony!" If Gwyneth bails, maybe he could test for the part of Pepper Potts.
  • Sometimes the better fit for the role can't act for shit. I'll take a good actor over a comic book hero lookalike any day of the week.
  • i didnt mean appearance. i meant his personality. Howard fits the part in every way. Cheadle doesnt fit the role of a military guy. Howard was perfect, and he had great chemistry with RDJ. I imagine don will stick out in that movie, and not in a good way.
  • How many softspoken, pushover, military personnel do you know? I know none.

Howard was far from perfect. He played the role and did a decent job. You're just too attached. Hustle and Flow to Military commander? Come on son!
  • it doesnt matter what movie he has been in, he was a good fit, and it worked. why fix something that isnt broken.. cheadle isnt much more suited as a colonel, i see him as a lawyer/doctor type more than a military guy. plus, terrance is so sexy....
  • They didn't "fix" anything. Howard wanted more money. They said "No" to his offer. If anything blame greedy Howard and thank Chealde for stepping up.

And if you think the role of the person who plays War Machine has to be "sexy" then you're out your mind. Howard can't even speak correctly for God sakes. Don't you want to hear what War Machine has to say?
  • that may be the case, but it doesnt mean that cheadle is better. He is cheaper, but not better. Terrance deserves his damn check. I had no trouble understanding what he said, and I was very excited to think he would play war machine. I am sure i am not alone in this. If Marvel wasnt so cheap, they wouldnt be playing switcharoo with the fans. Cheadle is cool, but he just doesnt fit the part imho. the sexy comment was meant as a joke btw.. although he is pretty sexy.
  • Cheaper and better is the reason I buy most my stuff at Wal Mart. If an actor gets greedy then sorry, see you later! You act like they ar e replacing Downey for God Sakes. Howard had like 5 scenes. That's far from significant.

Stop with the Chealde hating, just because you don't think he's sexy doesn't mean he couldn't act circles around Howard. Pimpin'

    WHoop that trick!
  • marvel is the greedy one here. and most stuff at walmart isnt great quality, so thats not a good analogy. the thing that bothers me most is just the way they change stuff around like nothing. This movie is like just another way to make money to them, they arent concerned with the fans like me that like continuity. I dont hate cheadle, hes cool, but i dont think he fits here. that is all im saying. This is a comic book movie, not oscar bait. we dont need a better actor, we need what we started with.
  • The way I see it is the extra 5 million or whatever insane amount Howard was asking for can be spent on special effects as far as I'm concerned. Downey is the center piece. You must not be a Comic book fan. They change writers and ilustrators all the time midway through a series. This means the tone and even the look of the characters could be different than from the initial release. This is Marvel crafty and conservative. Better actor for a cheaper cost....Better car for a cheper price......Better job with higher pay....are these better analogies?
  • I'm going to go ahead and tell you that you are very correct. Everything you said is right on and the only reason you guys are still having this conversation is because you're arguing with a Terrence Howard fan.
  • i am not a terrence howard fan. i am a continuity fan. if cheadle was there first, i would be bitching just the same that howard shouldnt replace him.
  • Yeah but like the other guy said, it is Howard's fault because he was being greedy and wanted more money, money that marvel doesn't have. I agree movies should have the same actors unless it's a reboot.
  • they have the money. they dont want to spend it. even though its gonna be a success. o well
  • oh I agree it will make money and that they do have it but I wouldn't spend alot of money on a supporting role. He wanting more than anyone else is getting.
  • Anything to make the production more like a soap opera. :P They're really making all the wrong moves here...(except for apparently adding Sam Rockwell)
  • Oh I agree with you on that one. It's nice to see Sam Rockwell getting more acting gigs.
  • I shouted in joy when I read that Sam Rockwell was going to be in it.
  • those analogies are much better. You are correct, i am not a big comic book fan, i am a movie fan, and movies dont work this way. This is a movie about a comic book, but it still is a movie.
  • DocHop
Please tell me you aren't going by past roles to prove a point...

"Gay cowboy to iconic Batman villain? Come on son?"

Sounds like you're more attached. Cheadle just doesn't fit the character in my opinion. Howard set up the role as a good supporting role in the future, changing up wasn't a good idea. Look at the new Punisher movie...
  • they can get rdj to play nick fury, we already know he can play a good black man
  • Name
Isn't Nick Fury supposed to be sexy? Samuel L. Jackson is about as sexy as finding a malodorous memento on your moccasins after a walk in the park. He stinks. Begin contract negotiations with George Clooney immediately. Now, that's sexy.
  • JedK
SAMUEL JACKSON RUINS EVERY MOVIE HE IS IN!!!!

That's right, I said it. He hogs the camera, and is a major distraction. It doesn't matter if he's the main character or not. The guy is an arrogant bastard, and it comes through in his movies. Go to IMDB and read the list of his films. They all either suck or could have done better without him. From Black Snake Moen, and the Spirit, to Star Wars. He has ruined them all. KEEP SLJ OUT OF IRONMAN!!!.
  • Name
I agree. Samuel L.(oudmouth) Jackson as Nick Fury? Why not Pia Zadora as the enchantress. He's below scraping the bottom of the barrel. He's the stain on the floor left by the barrel.
  • Patrick
This would be an AWFUL mistake on Marvels part. I didn't even like seeing Terrance Howard at the Gobles because it reminded me of what could have been.
  • I agree 100%.

I think that the fact that a Superhero team is being formed on screen in 5-6 films is a huge undertaking and Marvel s now up to their ears in Prodiction costs. Plus, Sam L. isn't cheap, and neither is T. Howard it seems. Plus, if you were to add ed Norton into the mix then you're starting to tread dangerous territory financially.

Marvel can't just throw all these actors into the story as they see fit. It has to e calculated and that includes the money they are willing to spend.

I hope everything works out, because if Sam Lg. leaves, then the whole thing is going into "Heroes/X-Men" territory for me.
  • Name
Plus, think of the money a better actor in the part would generate. Nobody goes to the movies to see Samuel L. Jackson (just look at the box office of the movies in which he actually stars. They tank, one after another. He's become a parody of himself, and there wasn't much there to parody. People may go to a movie he's in, but not to see him, and he is clearly the kind of actor who retards that all-important repeat, multiple viewership so vital to big-budget action films. He's a jerk. Cut him loose, and go for Clooney - a guy people line up to see on the silver screen.
  • Palmer
That's just stupid of Marvel to do that. I mean even their movies are closer to the Ultimate Marvel universe by trying to be realistic. I mean there's probably going to be an uproar of fanboys over this if it actually happens.
  • Ultimate Iron Man is literally nothing like the film Iron Man.
  • You're right. The film was better.
  • Yep. This is like casting a black man in the role of Robin -- what are they thinking?!
  • I was talking more about character and plot wise, but yes, the film is substantially better than the Ultimate Iron Man comics.
