Cool Stuff: Blade Runner Anime

35-year-old Atlanta artist Mark Brooks (self portrait to the right) wanted to know what Blade Runner would have looked like if it were an anime, so he created this piece just for fun. Drawn in ink on bristol board, the background was done in pencil, and the whole piece was colored on a computer in Photoshop 5.5.

“Of all the Harrison Ford movies my all time favorite has always been Deckard from Bladerunner. Bar none, some of the greatest visuals in any movie ever. I also love the idea of taking a movie, TV show, or book that would likely never be made into an animated series and reimagine it as if it were a cartoon. Whether it’s Bladerunner, Goonies, Breakfast at Tiffany’s or whatever, I love the cartoon look applied to a subject matter that normally looks serious and real.”

Mark says that he wants to do more anime-styled pieces based on popular movies. “I’ll pick a few and see what I can come up with!” writes Mark. And when and if he does, we’ll be sure to feature them in cool stuff. You can see more of Mark’s art on his DeviantArt page.

  • Someone will want to make this into an anime series.
  • they're going to remake it soon...
  • I watch it so many times and I know who will make this happen and that is the people behind Ghost In the Shell: Stand Alone Complex, Production I.G. It has the same feeling like Ghost In the Shell.
  • If you think about it, Ghost in the Shell is pretty much the anime equivalent of Blade Runner. It basically dwells on the same themes and issues, and it has that dark noir feel to it. They're both fantastic. I hope neither one gets remade by anyone.
  • oh wow that is really cool! Great job!!
  • I can see it now, it'd be an action/comedy anime series - complete with the classic "Snakes, why'd it have to be snakes?" during the Zhora dressing room scene.
  • hahahahahaha great comment. that really does look great. i would be the first to buy it if it ever came out.
  • I'm pretty sure that's the speeder from Star Wars.
  • I'm pretty sure you need to watch Blade Runner.
  • silentlord833
I'm pretty sure you are right Pill.....laugh out loud indeed.
  • Ugh, you might have agreed with me, but I'm still voting you down for blatant nerdishness.
  • silentlord833
NO! DON'T VOTE ME DOWN!!!!! WHAT WILL I DO!!!!!! And I'm the fucking nerd.
  • Don't worry. I voted down Pill for voting me down.
  • All kidding aside, I would love to see this become a real series. It's a world filled with great potential storylines, amazing visuals, and the occasional philosophical side road. And his art style is perfect for it.
  • nice. i first saw this on devart (brooks is a great marvel comics artist - worth a watch!)

    then on digg

now on /film, it's really doing the rounds! the dream is an indiana jones saturday morning cartoon though. THAT would be awesome.
  • themanwithaplan
A Saturday morning cartoon? Are you 10? :)
  • hokuten
If this guy new anything about anime, he would know that every anime is a blade runner anime. Same with Mad Max, those movies ooze out of the poor of every anime and video game ever made. The best anime blade runner is Snatcher.
  • True true...

Blade Runner would actually make a pretty good anime.
  • True, because there already were a lot of Asians in the film anyway.
  • Blade Runner is a good movie, and I think it would look stunning as an anime
  • I think we need to change the year 2000+ because we're in 2009 and I haven't seen any hover cars around.
  • Blade Runner is meant to be an anime but it is still a classic to see the movie although the stunt dbl for the snake lady is very obvious when she jumps and comes crashing in the glass panel windows.
  • Blade Runner is meant to be an anime but it is still a classic to see the movie although the stunt dbl for the snake lady is very obvious when she jumps and comes crashing in the glass panel windows you knew that wasn't the original actress jumping.
  • This is Awesome!!
  • Oh, Lordy, I hope not. Hollywood needs to get of its remake-happy kick and make more "new" movies.
  • They can bring back Harrison Ford, but he should probably have a younger sidekick.
  • Yes, like Shia LeBouf. He would be awesome! Or maybe Seth Rogen, he seems to be in a lot of movies lately. :P
  • Exactly.
  • Brooks gets a national shout out for Texas.
    Respect due.
  • Get Shinichiro Watanabe on this stat!
  • I'd watch it
  • byron
    OMG NEED THIS NOW.
  • Any News on what his next project will be?
  • If his turnaround is good he could really make a buck for this pictures...especially for films coming up...
  • This guy has some pretty good work. Blade Runner kicked ass, so ahead of its time.
  • Chris
    Photoshop 5.5? Holy Cow.
  • Ki77erB
Thank god someone else noticed that. 5.5? WTF? We're on like 11 now!
  • The pic make me think of SNATCHER (Hideo Kojima :D) on the SegaCD (which was inspired on Blade Runner)... The anime is a really cool idea...It would be better to see the world of Blade Runner in an Anime than on film...pretty sure !
