New Photo: On The Set of James Cameron’s Avatar

We’ve seen a few production photos from James Cameron’s Avatar thus far, but most of them consisted of Cameron and crew huddled behind monitors looking off into the distance at something we can only assume is cool. We can only assume, because we never see what exactly they’re looking at.

Well the New York Times has an interesting set photo which actually shows a bit more than the usual. Cameron is standing in a set which appears to be some kind of alien space craft (I could be totally wrong, and I’m sure someone who has actually read Cameron’s scriptment will correct me in the comments). Full photo after the jump.

  • James Cameron crosses his hands in so many pictures.

    Random, I know.
  • he also invents some of the best, smartest female characters in American cinema!
  • That's true. And inventing smart female characters is hard.
  • who's this james cameron everyones talking about? isnt he the guy who made Piranha 2? :P
  • oh im glad you put that ":P" james cameron is definely not known for piranha 2...
  • The photo looks like a bad photoshop comp.
  • It's not that hard to get a PA job on movies in Hollywood. The PA is just the bitch of the set, but they can get their hands on the dailies sometimes. They are also prone to hearing ramblings around the set. So to me, this isn't entirely unbelievable.
  • this is great I'm totally blown away...this makes up for the last image 100 times over
  • Wow! We actually get to see what the set looks like, and some green screen this time!
  • all the secrets! who does this guy think he is JAMES CAMERON?! oh, wait...
  • mkw
    Novi181, you're full of shit.

As a person who genuinely did work on this film, I can say that everything you claim to know about this image is way, way off.

Not that I'll reveal the truth here, confidentiality agreement n' all.

But glad to see they're finally starting to show the goods.
  • I'm a little tired of these type of photos. Why can't they release design drawings or set pics. something.

GET READY TO BE MIND F*CKED!!!!!
  • Novi181
I am a production assistant on this movie, I cannot disclose too much since I am under a contract not to say anything. First off, this is a space shuttle, as you can tell, the green screen is the front window and that circular area in the middle is the control station. Much like the movie Alien, the pod that James is looking at is a hyperbaric chamber where the crew sleeps while traveling at light speed. Since this movie takes place in a epic mystic future on a distant planet, its interesting to see how James mixes space and fantasy in this 3-D epic event. I feel I have said too much, but I have been an avid reader of slashfilm for sometime now and I really like the work you guys put into this blog. I hope this was some insight to the movie since this is all I can contractually say, I know the official trailer will be released with Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen... Woops, now I've said too much, but thank god the internet can be anonymous!!!
  • niiiiice, you're so lucky you're working with him
  • Tercotta
Whether or not that makes any sense a trailer in front of Transformers would actually make sense and I wouldn't be surprised at all if that happens.
  • Brian
I highly doubt a PA would get information regarding a trailer release...everything else you've said has been guessed by fanboys across the world. Yawn, fake.
  • wow brilliant. thanks for the insider info. the movie feels like it going to be ground breaking and awesome like t2 or the abyss was. cheers
  • tinfoil
Novi181's description is bogus based on the fact that they are not traveling between planets on a shuttle. The scriptment describes the interstellar ship as being half a mile long. This guy doesn't know what he's talking about.
  • you must love your job.
  • Greg
Anyone believe Novi181? Sounds like a load of tosh to me.
  • It's not that hard to get a PA job on movies in Hollywood. The PA is just the bitch of the set, but they can get their hands on the sides sometimes. They are also prone to hearing ramblings around the set. So to me, this isn't entirely unbelievable.
  • yep you're right
  • J.D.
I know from PERSONAL experience as Mr. Cameron's house cleaner, that this is just a photo of his bathtub in his 8-room mansion. Maybe I've revealed too much.
  • I don't.
  • charles
Damn man he's getting really old.
  • J.D.
LEAKED: A photo of the alien in Avatar. Freaky!
    http://i256.photobucket.com/albums/hh197/greazysp...
  • wow, that looks so real.
  • d a t a r o c k
    So are you.
  • I reckon John Landis was one cool, respectful cat for always wearing a suit on the job whilst directing. Spotting Cameron's shirt in this photo made me think of that. As for the photo, at least it gives a little more away, but it's still very 'meh'. These set photos just aren't peaking any interest. They're very generic photos of folk on set. Big deal.
  • did he just take the set blue prints from Aliens and Abyss and mix it together?
  • Are we ever going to get a shot of some actual film? I bet the trailers will be slide shows of these photos we keep getting, the behind the scenes look.
  • the old man
    That's impossible it's 3-D... :X
  • i think I speak for all of us when I say I'm getting tired of looking at Cameron doing nothing. It is nice however to see that this film is being made/worked on.
  • we are still yet to see some worthy pictures from this film. Hurry up already
  • yeah i've seen nothing but set photos... next!!!
  • this must be his way of making this film be something huge.
  • Palmer
I am somewhat reminded of the stasis pods from 2001: A Space Odyssey.
  • Jessica D
Reminds me of the tv show SeaQuest
  • I can't wait for the talking dolphins.
  • Nevely
looks like the star trek set with the sick bay wedged in, yawn
  • I can picture it nwo...the poster for avatar...cameron pointing off screen COMING SOON....

Anyway with regards to Novi81s comment...I am James Cameron himself and as you can see its a nice portrait of me with some green drapes...keep mumbling and all youll get is more photos of me point off screen *sticks out tongoue*
  • C Rhodes
I've been hearing about this film for what seems like forever yet I've no real idea what its about and what all the fuss about it is!?
  • It's the best look yet, even if it isn't much. It's just nice to see James Cameron back doing sci-fi. He's probably the best science fiction director still alive and working in Hollywood.

In my opinion, Cameron automatically gets complete confidence and trust for this project since (if we exclude Piranha 2 which he didn't have much control over) he has one of the most compelling directorial resumes, which is nigh on spotless and just darn impressive. Titanic may be iffy but some of the action sequences are fantastic and you only have to look at Australia to see how hard this romantic epic stuff can be to pull off, and he did pull it off for the most part.

I know it's another picture of behind the scenes, and I'm/we're still looking for a good decent solid look at this film, my expectations and enthusiasm remain high. This should truly be an event film for all to see.
  • Mr. Pendragon
Seems like a standard sci-fi set to me so far. I'm anxious to see a real photo that gives us a sense of the worlds/environments this film is going to be set in. All of these on set pics are pretty weak, but it's understandable considering that they're probably waiting for the teaser to give first impressions.
  • Mike Lowther
Sometimes it pays to be a PA
  • if your not getting payed to be a PA, your doing it wrong.
  • Of what we can see of this set piece, I like. I can't wait till we finally see some actual footage.
