Franklyn International Movie Trailer

HanWay Films has released the official international movie trailer for the dark dystopian fantasy film Franklyn on IGN. The first feature film by writer/director Gerald McMorrow, Franklyn is a “split narrative set simultaneously in contemporary London and in a future metropolis ruled by religious fervor.” Sounds pretty crazy right? Well it gets even weirder. “It’s the story of four lost souls, divided by two parallel worlds, on course for an explosive collision when a single bullet will decide all their fates.” Trailer after the jump.

Ryan Phillippe plays a masked vigilante detective named Preest, who is searching for his nemesis on the streets of Meanwhile City, a monolithic fantasy metropolis ruthlessly governed by faith and religious fervor. Bernhard Hill plays Esser, a broken man who is searching for his wayward son amongst the rough streets of London’s homeless. Sam Riley plays a heartbroken guy named Milo, who is desperately trying to find a way back to “the purity of first love.” And Eva Green plays an art student named Emilia whose suicidal artwork is “becoming increasingly more complex and deadly.”

EyeForFilm saw the film at the London Film Festival and calls the movie “a breath of fresh air for British cinema” and “the most impressive, daring feature from a first-time writer/director I’ve seen in some time”. ScreenDaily praised the film’s cinematography but was ultimately unsatisfied, but admits that it will “be remembered and marks McMorrow as a name to watch.”

The futuristic yet retro-Victorian Gothic London city looks like something out of a much bigger film. The concept is extremely unique, it strikes me in the same way as when I first saw the trailer for Dark City. As always, tell me what you think of the trailer in the comments below.

You can watch the trailer in higher resolution on IGN. The film hits theaters in the UK on February 20th 2009. No word on a domestic release yet.

  • Wow, this looks really interesting, never heard about that one before. I'm very interested.
  • Rob
Looks interesting. Dark City, Mister X & The Invisibles all spring to mind at different points. Hopefully it isn't style over substance however, as I can't help but feel the trailer is trying to make a fairly straightforward story appear "complex". I'm all for going to see it & being surprised tho.

Err, not that it doesn't look cool or anything, it just seems Watchmen-ish to me.
  • Everything about the trailer seems Watchmen like. From the music to the voiceover, to the last line "I'll be waiting and Watching". It looks interesting, but so do a lot of movies.
  • Rob
I will never, ever understand the Dark City love. That movie was painfully mediocre. Can anyone explain it to me?
  • Seems better then the last trailer i saw for it. The last trailer was not that great. Still kinda seems confusing.
  • likewise, this trailer seemed to interest me more. didnt the first trailer come out like a few months ago? i fell like it was a while now.
  • Looks very good
  • Looks very good, definitely reminds me of Dark City
  • MacAttack
    Dark City == awesome.
  • xGHOVOx
I can't help but be a wee bit exited about this... It does indeed look very fresh, plot wise.

But I can't help but notice the leads similarity to Watchmen's Rorschach.
  • yup.
  • Palmer
I am extremely confused but the guy gives off a Rorschach/The Question vibe.
  • starscream9289
The only thing I could think of whenever I saw that masked vigilante guy was "Rorschach".
  • im definitely confused as hell, but im definitely digging this flick.

i really love movies that have a clear sense of style and know how the universe and everything should look (a la Dark City, as many have referred to), and im also a big fan of movies that just go with the flow and dont bother with "sense" lol.

as its just a trailer, i obviously dont know how its all going to play out, but movies like this with a quasi-unique visual style and story are what make me crave the director's chair (as well as the writer's quill)

thats right, i write with a quill, get over it.
  • This actually looks a bit interesting. Im willing to see how the Director pulls it off.
  • I've been following this since it first emerged a while back on some film boards I partake in. Sounds interesting and looks grand. Count me in.
  • It looks interesting visually, but I'm a little hesitant to jump right in. It seems like it might be one of those movies that has a really cool concept, but actually blows in the execution.

    Nice!!!
  • Maazer
    Dark City meets Gossip.
  • gah
    Rorschach???
  • joshi38
Shh! You're not supposed to make that connection!
  • a) I have no idea what this movie is about, b) who is Franklyn? a character or a place or something else?
  • Guest
    So, a rip-off of Pitof's Vidocq?

(Yes, Pitof made a fairly decent movie before the atrocity of Catwoman. As with any foreign film, don't watch the terrible English dub.)
  • Looks very interesting, I'll be keeping my eye on this one. Like everyone else, I'm getting the "Dark City" vibe, if it's half as good as that film then count me in!
  • vader182
It looks like if you took one element from Watchmen and shoved it into England, and added in some of your own ideas. Having said that, it does look like a rather fun movie.

i saw the film at the LFF, it was good but somewhat flawed film...

“be remembered and marks McMorrow as a name to watch.”

that quote rings quite true. it's not blatanty like any other movie i has seen, plotwise, though many of the themes/visuals link it to many other good and cult films.

one extra thing i would say, after i saw the film i spoke at length with my co-viewer of how it would be a film notoriously hard to market, especially in america. as no trailer can do it justice without takign something away from the experience of having actully watched it.

final note, i thoght bernard hill gave a particualirly strong performance, and essential holds the film together acting-wise.
  • Pretty decent trailer, has me intrigued. I will keep my eye out.
  • joshi38
"ScreenDaily praised the film’s cinematography but was ultimately unsatisfied"

Kind of how I felt about the trailer. It seems like there was meant to be an interesting concept in there but I missed it. I still may see this though, just to see for myself.
  • I'm really looking forward to this movie. A British Donnie Darko they're calling it with undertones of Dark City. Only cost $12M to make so it might show up a few of the big budgets coming out.
  • Donivan
If this movie was to be released two years ago after another masked vigilante in England, some of you would be saying,"I looked at this and all I see is V for Vendetta".It is not Watcmen ,it is not Dark City.Expand your view, people.
  • skippy
hmmm... it reminds me of "Hercules in New York"
  • Hmm Very interesting
I like the world that he has set up for the film
And eva greens performance in Casino Royale was fantastic!
Will look out for this film
  • Alexi
It's Bernard Hill (not BerHard)! And couldn't Ryan even be bothered to attempt an English accent? Or is this just to sell it in the States? C'mon guys, look at the efforts Hugh Laurie went to. Still, looks interesting if you like Goth Noir. And I do.
  • Yeah this looks pretty awesome!
  • mikle
does anyone else think this song sounds like the one used in 28 days later/ 28 weeks later?
  • Ugh, the dialogue was awful, but the visuals look interesting. I have no idea what the movie is supposed to be about.

Also "Dark City" is an awesome movie, lets not compare it to this quite yet.
  • DO WANT
  • Anything that is compared to Dark City is good. This film sounds amazing for a first time writer/director
  • ran..//..
mikle it does sound like "in the house...." the song from 28 days/weeks maybe john murphy is doing the score too?
  • kirie cussen
My sister appears at 0.19-0.26, Shannon cussen remember the name :)
  • thenostromo
Watched it last night. It will require a second viewing. Significant portions are visually stunning. The narration was mostly weak and annoying to me. I found the story and idea to be very cutting edge and relevant to current day struggles with ideology and the seperation of church and state. Some humorous moments, too. All around a very good film IMHO.
