Dexter Marries His Sister?

I usually refrain from covering the personal lives of actors/directors, but I thought that some of you may be interested in this story. I promise not to make a habit of this.

Like many of you, I’m a Dexter fanatic. I’ve been watching the show since the first episode, and while it doesn’t get better than the first season, the last two seasons have been must watch television. And I understand that it’s a television show, and I know that it’s all just fiction, but I was still somewhat disturbed to learn the news on /Gossip.

Michael C. Hall (the actor who plays Dexter) has married his on screen sister Jennifer Carpenter in a real life California wedding on New Years Eve. Apparently the couple had been dating for a year and a half, something which I never heard about until now. It is a bit strange, right? Now that you know this information, will it change the way you look at their on screen relationship? My theory is if the story is good, which it is, you won’t think about it.

    why is this news?
the characters are fictional and the actors are people with their own real lives.

    so what?
  • i've read that many of you find jennifer carpenter sexy and hot?
i know this things are in the eye of the beholder.. but cammon
to me it seems so goofy..squared, flat.. no breasts, no hips

I find it weirder to watch Dexter knowing that the actor who plays him starred on Broadway. Now I hope it won't be hard to watch without picturing him singing and dancing. But the marriage will be weird also. Still love the show, and it is so good that all the writing and acting I am sure will take over, so as to not let you even think of their "personal lives".
  • it's just a TV show, people. get over it.
  • Brad
David Tennant was dating his daughter from Doctor Who. These things happen, don't see why it's odd at all.
  • This will change nothing about the show and most viewers won't even know this happened.

  • Peter,

One is acting, the other is real. Just so you know Jedi's don't exist either. I know it sucks. Santa is made-up too.

I am crumbling your entire world with reckless abandon.
  • Nah it shouldnt change anything these celebrities arent thaaaat big. Maybe if Anjeline Jolie and bradd pitt played siblings that would be a different story
  • Even though oscars are only given to people in the film industry.....
  • Yeah wouldn't he yell "EMMMMMMMYYYY!"
  • Sorry but this is still weird. Every time I see them both I will automatically think of this.

I thought season 3 was awesome. Smits ruled. OSCARRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR!
  • Interesting but I don't really care that much. I always refrain from news about celebrities personal lives.

I would like to know what everyone thought of last season though? Personally I found it very drawn out and never really hit home with what the season was trying to achieve. There where a couple of high points and a lot of set up for season four but other than that a very dull season compared to season 1 and 2
  • It's no surprise really, when you work with somebody for hours and days on end, your sure to create an emotional connection with somebody, and I'm sure I will be able to look past the brother/sister façade, after all, if I couldn't separate fiction from reality, then surely something on my end must be wrong! :p

If you've got problems with their relationship, then you've REALLY got problems!
  • Like the Dark Knight producer said, it's okay to separate the actors from the roles. They seem happy so who cares.
  • I too wish them all the best. I love Dexter but they're merely actors on a (admittedly great) television show and what they do onscreen is what they do for a living. In short, I hope all goes well for them.
  • jesster
Wouldn't it be much worse if the relationship was the other way? IE, they were sibs in real life and played a couple onscreen. THAT would be far more disturbing.
  • Its happened before. Although I will admit that its a weird situation, people need to understand how to differentiate between television and reality.
  • I'm happy for him actually. When I first saw Dexter I couldn't believe this great guy wasn't married. Though I remember reading about them dating and thought it was fake. Now I'm proven wrong! :[ Also, bring on the next season!
  • This is incredible. I'm so happy for Michael C. Hall and Jennifer Carpenter who are awesome actors, I wish the best for them.

Ironically, I have been noticing a romantic chemistry between the two on screen in the last two seasons. Watch closely and you see a flirtatious nature in their scenes together. At the start of the third season, my friends and I actually began theorizing that their might be a romantic relationship plot growing with Deb and Dexter.

It would be creepy, but tolerable, as they are not blood related in any way... (unless Harry slept with the C.I.... we don't know ... yet ...)

Now the chemistry clearly noticeable with these two across the last two seasons makes more sense. This was not the actors, writers, or directors intentions ... it was just a natural and unavoidable reaction between two people that have feelings for one another.

Come on people, its a TV show!!!
  • My Name
Two step-siblings got romantic with each other in Clueless and it was perfectly acceptable. Same almost happened in Cruel Intentions without most people batting an eyelash.

Never thought I'd see the day where I'd use either movie in an argument.

Wow, this is really gonna be awkward for Rita. Some tense family dinners that's gonna make.
  • ma44
STUPID. who the hell cares what actors do in their personal lives? just continue to make good television/movies and let the tabloids worry about the bullshit.
  • scott
technically, they're not blood related on the show... and technically this isn't really relevant to anything and isn't really that interesting of trivia
  • jerzy62
Why would their marriage effect anything? They're actors... they're not Dexter and Deb... those are just the roles they play. I'm thinking if people have issues with it then they're blurring the lines between reality and fantasy.... which is just sad.

She's just as dingy in real life as she is on the show,,, :)
  • I would love to say who cares but unfortunately my heart's very invested in that show and it's storylines. For whatever reason, I can't help but have a very bizarre feeling about this. Regardless, I wish them the best of luck. But... damn. It just... it's weird. It's like knowing the random audience member picked by a magician is his girlfriend or something. What a strange feeling.
  • Geist
I'm gonna say who cares. There are actors and actresses that are related that have played romantice parts opposite each other, and I would normally find that more weird then this.
  • seethe42
I see no issue with husband and wife playing brother and sister. Now if it was brother and sister playing husband and wife that might be a little wierd.
  • alan
are you serious about this post its not apirl 1st is it (must be a slow day in movie world), pathetic. I can not believe you thought this was blog worthy on /film
  • That guy's murdering people on the show, incest is the least of his crimes IMO!
  • Hahaha! Well said!

"I promise not to make a habit of this."

Thank god. This was an awful post.
  • I love the show and long as it doesn't affect it in any negative way which I doubt it will, who cares. This stuff happens all the time.
  • Stan
They're not blood relatives on the show anyway(Dexter is adopted), and I knew about the relationship before hand so not really.
  • Yeah, I remembering being weirded out when Roswell siblings Jason Behr and Katherine Heigl were dating and engaged.
  • Dave
Just wait until he accidentally calls her "Deb" while in bed. Then we can have an article about how Dexter is divorcing his sister.
  • It will be buying them as bro and sister a bit odd, but ill be able to look past it easily.
  • Yeah, it's like when I found out that Christan Bale and Maggie Gyllenhal are distant cousins; the movie was good enough that it didn't matter they were kissing.
  • cheve
    Weeeeeeeiirrrd.
  • MURDER and INCEST. Two of Hollywood's favorite subjects.
  • As in the words of steven lynch. I want to F your sister and pick her up from middle school. Oh dude not cool that sister. Yeah she is hot thou.
