Yesterday, The Dark Knight grabbed Writers Guild and Producers Guild nominations, shocking some Hollywood insiders who don’t believe that the comic book movie has a chance at the Best Picture Academy Award. Today Christopher Nolan and the film have been nominated for the Director’s Guild of America Awards. Here is the list of nominees:

David Fincher, “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button”
Christopher Nolan, “The Dark Knight”
Ron Howard, “Frost/Nixon”
Gus Van Sant, “Milk”
Danny Boyle, “Slumdog Millionaire”

I’m shocked that Darren Aronofsky didn’t make the list for The Wrestler, especially over Howard’s Ron Nixon.

  • The Dark Knight was no "Batman & Robin."

youre gay if you like batman and robin.
  • Dark knight completes the trifecta like the cross joint.
  • I haven't had a chance to watch Slumdog or Frost/Nixon so I can't comment on those. I will say however that Milk is a fine movie, I really enjoyed it and thought that everyone involved did a tremendous job with it. I agree with you, The Wrestler should have made this list but not all lists are going to be the same and in some way someone will feel cheated at the end of the day. Like I said, I haven't seen 2 of the 5 nominations so I really can't say if The Wrestler should be up there even though I think it should be.
  • I haven't seen Frost/Nixon or Ben Button, yet, but I'll see one of them this weekend. I am highly disappointed not to see Aronofsky on the list. From the three movies I have seen on the list I would remove Van Sant and place Aronofsky there. I enjoyed Milk, it's a good film, but the buzz I feel is hyped because of the political topic and Sean Penn's performance more than the movie itself.
  • Me too, I can't wait to see the nominations.
  • Congratulation to The Dark Knight once again. Everyone involved deserves everything they're getting right now. This movie will be talked about for years. I can't wait to see the nominations for the Academy Awards now.
  • slumdog millionaire or milk will win. from what i hear milk is phenomenal as is slumdog millionaire. im seeing slumdog this weekend so then i will know pretty much which films have a chance and which ones dont considering ive seen or will see every other movie on there except milk. the dark knight is great and all but i feel like america's youth has blown it way out of proportion. heath ledger's performance was fantastic but that doesnt mean you should say "why so serious" or "you wanna know how i got these scars" all the time. i think it still deserves the nomination though as for
  • No Darren Aronofsky????

Well thank god Nolan got nominated.
  • go dark knight! slum dog is an amazing too. all are good choices. pretty strong year for oscars.

Although I loved TDK, Slumdog was a better film. I really think Danny Boyle should get Director as well.

No offense to anyone's opinions, but I was let down by the Wrestler. It was very good, but not great. Though I would have chosen it over Benjamin Button easily.
  • Yeah all those people deserve to be nominated

    But wheres the wachowski brothers...JOKE
  • I'm starting to think TDK has a shot at the big prize.

    I hope.

TDK will win best picture if nominated. Book it.
  • Im in total agreement with Frelling's post
Fincer did alot of fine work in Benjamin Button but he dropped the ball with his editor. That film is Wayyyy to long. It's length hurts the film tremendously! Also Nolan totally deserves his nomination. Does anyone think any of these other directors could helm a Batman film with that much skill. Im sick of hearing its only a comic book film. Well it didn't direct itself! GREAT job!

  • Unfortunately, 'Button' and 'Frost/Nixon' will likely be Oscar noms, for being not so great films.
  • Righteous! Although I do also think Aranofsky should be in there, of course Howard's going to be in there, ugh.
  • I'm sure Aronofsky deserved it (haven't seen Frost/Nixon yet), but how often does the DGA nominate super-low budget films?
  • The lack of Aronofsky recognition is disappointing.
  • I'm shocked Nolan made it over Aronofsky.
  • :P
  • Where the hell IS 'The Wrestler'? I really really liked that movie and it was pretty damn good...'Benjamin Button' was ok, but it wasn't better than Aronofsky's film...
  • Anything popular is overrated it seems.

    is ron howard jewish?

Trifecta! *Legend of Zelda music pays in the background*

Oh wait, it's called a Tri-Force in Zelda. Sorry.
  • Big fan of Fincher but Benjamin Button was not one of his better pieces of work. He couldnt have used an editor on the film before the release. Wasn't he at odds with the Studio for this very reason? They wanted to edit it down and he didnt. He was wrong. Long and drawn out and dull movie.
  • It's nice to see a popular film doing some work around the awards circuit. And the thing is - it deserves it too, it's a cracking film and Nolan does genuinely belong to have some credit for it. It's pretty darn hard to make a film in Hollywood which has a budget of $100 million plus and, y'know actually come close to be artistically and financially successful so kudos to the creative force behind it all.

The Dark Knight is the best film of 2008 hands down. Benjamin Button was a glossy racist mess while City of God, oops, Slumdog Millionaire left alot to be desired.
  • I thought this would happen after yesterday's news.
  • Me too, Peter. Me too
  • I want to see that.
  • luke_test
Did it really shock Hollywood insiders or were you just saying that to be dramatic?

I didn't shock me and I'm not a Holywood insider.
  • Mike
Ron Howard is very popular in Hollywood.
  • he's overrated
  • I'm shocked by the fact that Aronofsky didn't even beat out David Fincher. Other than that I think the list is fine. I just find it bizarre that these "Hollywood insiders" are so surprised that Nolan and the Dark Knight are doing so well. I'm very confident in the probability of the Dark Knight being nominated in just about everything but I still don't think it will win anything. People have been saying Slumdog Millonaire is the underdog in the awards season when I think it has a much better chance of winner more awards than Dark Knight. It's the Batman that is the underdog here.
  • Yeah :(
  • Yeah the fact that a movie like The Wrestler (which I believe could win over any film on that list) wasn't even nominated makes me pretty angry.
  • Howard’s Ron Nixon. Nice
