Taylor Lautner Returns for Twilight Sequel New Moon

Summit Entertainment has announced that Taylor Lautner will reprise his role as Jacob Black in Chris Weitz’s Twilight sequel adaptation New Moon. Apparently in the sequel, Jacob transformers into an almost totally different character - a foot taller, five years older, and a lot bigger. We have to believe that he can transform into a huge werewolf, and until today it was believed that the role would have to be recast. Quotes after the jump.

“I’m very happy that Taylor will be playing Jacob Black in NEW MOON and that he’s doing so with the enthusiastic support of Summit, the producers and Stephenie Meyer,” said Weitz. “The characters in Stephenie’s books go through extraordinary changes of circumstance and also appearance; so it is not surprising that there has been speculation about whether the same actor would portray a character who changes in so many surprising ways throughout the series. But it was my first instinct that Taylor was, is, and should be Jacob, and that the books would be best served by the actor who is emotionally right for the part.”

Lautner says that he has “been working hard preparing for the physicality that this role will require and can’t wait to get started with the filming of New Moon.” Entertainment Weekly claims that Lautner has already gained 19 pounds and hopes to pack on 10 more.

In the sequel, Bella Swan is devastated by the abrupt departure of her vampire love, Edward Cullen but her spirit is rekindled by her growing friendship with the irresistible Jacob Black. Suddenly she finds herself drawn into the world of the werewolves, ancestral enemies of the vampires, and finds her loyalties tested.

New Moon will hit theaters on November 20th 2009.

  • Yeah, this site is sorta decidedly anti-twilight. That's something that you, as a fan of Twilight, must get used to or just completely ignore in order to enjoy slashfilm to its fullest. The majority of the readers clearly oppose the film and the writers here have taken the stance that most of us have taken, which is, Twilight is kinda silly. I mean look at that kid in the picture up top. Stare at him for ten seconds and try not to break into a fit of laughter. Go ahead. Try. I'm waiting.
  • Well, this is Peter's blog and he blogs about movie news even when he's not excited about the project. He is also completely justified in his opinion, like it or not.
I've learned to overlook most of the hate and often look forward to what amusing comments might crop up for each post regarding Twilight. I've also had fun mocking the twitards and debating with others about certain plot points. It's all in how you look at it and it seems silly to get too offended by commenters who clearly are not the target audience. Not to mention the fact that Twilight wasn't a good movie, entertaining, but not good.
I enjoyed the Twilight books for what they are, fluff, and I had fun anticipating the last movie even though I knew it wasn't going to be very good. I'm not so sure how much I'm anticipating New Moon, but as of right now, I'm disappointed in the poor decision to resign Launter. Height can be dealt with, but he looks like a child and no matter of bulking will change his face. I also do not have confidence in the make-up artists succeeding in their jobs because the make job on the Cullens was pretty crappy.
  • Don't worry, they'll be eating those words ten years from now when nobody remembers who the f**k Robert Pattinson was.
  • This post seems very "perez hilton" like
  • don't care but i understand why Peter posted it.
  • Likewise. I have no idea who this kid is or why anyone would give a f*ck... but its Twilight related so you gotta go wit the trends. No different from the Watchmen saturation. *sigh*
  • Zinc
OH GOD WHY ARE THEY MAKING THIS SHIT
  • matthew
OH GOD WHY IS PETER EVEN POSTING THIS?
seriously. just look at that kid.
  • Because... Sadly, people read it.
  • Kiki
If you frekin write this as if you were supporting Twilight, its cast, and Stephenie meyer then why do you say, "Because...sadly people read it"
    I mean, seriously.
  • Because film news is film news no matter how bad you think the film will be.
  • way to find the BRAest picture peter lol
  • gah
AHHHHHH! That photo will haunt me for years. That kid is so creepy.
  • Palmer
Hmmm....I didn't read the post, but the picture just screams douchebag. Also, would people even still be interested in a sequel by the time it gets released?
  • they are rushing it into production to come out november 09, so I would say some hype would still be there, by that time another book might be announced etc. so yeah people will be interested
  • Yes Unfortunatly YES...

My girlfriend has been trying to buy a copy of the book from every single store for the past week...

    Sold out everywhere....
  • Haha!!! That picture reminded me of how gay 'Twilight' was...
  • starscream9289
    NOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!! NOT AGAIN!!!!!!!!!!
I TAUGHT THE NIGHTMARE WAS OVER!!!!
  • idk, i dont think i can believe sharkboy would turn into a 6 foot werewolf

where would his webbed-finger gloves go????
  • Bri

  • I've gotta find a picture of this kid I went to school with. He looks exactly like that except without the spiked hair. For the first time in my life I wish i were still in high school just so that I could torment this kid with this.
  • haha, sharkboy, lolz
  • Sorry about your face. Better luck next time!
  • Also, I just read that premise again and I grew a vagina. Thanks /film.
  • DavidChenFan
I just got a virus while browsing this site! Not cool!!!
  • Dylan D.
He looks like a poster boy for NAMBLA
  • Branden
Even though, I hated "Twilight". I loved the character of Jacob. He was very mysterious and I knew that he was a werewolf. I mean, duh. It's so obvious.

Stephanie Meyers is not breaking new ground here.

I'm glad that Robert Pattinson is not in the movie so much. Hooray for that. I guess.
  • Unfortunitely I bet they re-write the script to add him in there more than he should be... make the tween fan base happy. New Moon is my favorite book of the series and I WANT to see a LOT of Jacob and not so much of Edward... but they gave him like 10 million dollars to do the next movie. I doubt that means they'll put him only in the beginning and end like he's SUPPOSED to be
  • you guys are right. As a female (and I don't read Twilight), I am disturbed by the sexist comments made here targeted at female readers... seriously, WTF
  • Agreed, that is bullshit, Angry. You, as a female, shouldn't have to see that shit. Many women, like yourself, don't even like Twilight.
Readers like Meli, who may be fans of the series, aren't the avid fans of twilight that many posters here hate so much. It sucks that this book has caused this strange 'rift' here on slashfilm. Some day the sexist commenters will grow up or move on to 4chan.
  • He's cute, almost like a porn star.
  • There's a lot of hatred for this film here, and while it didn't initially appeal to me, I saw 'Twilight' a few days ago and some-what enjoyed it. Maybe this tells me that because I'm male and under the age of 25 that I must obviously be a homosexual, or that I can look past the predispositions of films and just enter a cinema and enjoy a film like 'Twilight' for what it really is; entertainment.
  • oh don't worry... this site is incredibly anti-Twilight... I understand it, there's been some tween twilight fans who get on here, pretend like they are text messaging instead of using the full key board to their advantage, and posting things like if you don't like the book, shut up, edward is a god! That kind of turned this site off to Twilight in a MUCH more intense way than is justifiable just from the movie/book/story itself. It's a reaction to some of the fans, I think
  • I'm so excited for this. Oh wait. I'm a man. A brain twice the size of a woman's. It's science.
  • Frank
Just go see "Let the right One In" for a much better tween vampire experience.
  • this dude looks like a fag
  • OH YESSS OMGZZZZZZZZ TAYLORR
  • that's why every once and a while I put in Cecil B. Demented and just watch the carnage and checking news reports hoping someone killed everyone involved with this god awful movie.

And Peter at some point you have to have some integrity and just don't post this shit. I like you dude but please draw the line in the sand for all our sakes.
  • Us guys, well we're obviously not interested in this type of news, but Peter knows the ladies will flock towards this kind of stuff. So, i could see why he'd wanna post this.
  • Us guys, well we're obviously not interested in this type of news, but Peter knows the lady readers will flock towards this kind of stuff. So, i could see why he'd wanna post this.
  • Meg
Okay, I understand that the demographic of Twilight fans is primarily girls, but as a woman who loathes Twilight and everything it stands for, please don't make generalizations that make it sound like all female Slashfilm readers like this crap, or even want to see it. Not ALL the ladies are about to come a-flockin'.
  • Nina
Do u know he tries to register on ***seekingsugarmomma. c om***, but has been refused for some reasons. I do not think it's hard to join that site. Britney has her profile there.
  • gah
I wish he would at least change the picture. just put the twilight logo or something. sweet jesus that kid is creepy looking.
  • I'm happy hes returning. I have a problem when an actor is introduced in a film and then in a sequel is replaced by a different actor... I mean, it's not like they didn't think there was going to be a sequel. Honestly.

And, I happen to like Twilight. It's not the most amazing thing in the world by any means but really, is all of the hatred towards it and it's fans is totally not needed.
  • LoL, agreed on the picture!
I cannot express how seriously annoyed I feel that no one in charge had the balls to say "Fuck You" to the stupid ass twitards and recast the Jacob role. This decision appears to have been made on emotion and with a strong influence of the writer, WTF?? Jacob transforms and matures to someone who looks 25yrs, Lautner isn't even 6ft and is 16 going on 14, so yeah we'll all believe he becomes part of the love triangle. -rolls eyes- I was hoping that the decision would offer a compromise and two actors would play the role. Lautner as pre-wolf Jacob and then another guy for wolf-Jacob. Bah, it's not as if I expect New Moon to be good, but I wanted something to sound promising. LoL
  • Yeah, he looks like he just got off the Disney teen star conveyor belt. Complete with stupid-looking hair.
  • travis fan
twilight fans really don't understand who are good actors and who arent.they call robert pattinson better then johnny depp, taylor better then ben barnes.man, fans very ridiculus.
  • Not all of us! Come on, some of us are sensible! :-)
  • Twilight fans = Little School girls
Little School girls = Don't know what a good actor is

    Example:
Little School Girls love Zac Efron and his Acting
Zac Efron= Cant act for @$%!
  • Smilla
    Wow, now I am surprised.

I'm pretty much a film fanatic, and have recently watched some great, somewhat, unknown films because of reviews or advice posted on this site. 'The Wackness', 'Brick', ect.

I noticed this site because of a review on Twilight a couple of weeks ago, and haven't gone a day without reading /film since, and that has nothing to do with the lack of Twilight, but because of the quality of the other posts, the reviews, the interviews ect.

But to post an item, of which you later state only to have posted, because ' sadly people read it' that's just strange. Why post something you don't stand behind? And why, thereby, make fun of the people who are interested in reading that. So the picture of that actor is crappy, that's just a part of Hollywood that's as much ligit as any other part.

I've read the Twilight series, and no, It's not the best literary work, nor the best 'book-to-film' adaptation, but still, I like the root of the book. And, like fanboys mouthwatering over anything and everything having to do with an adaptation of their favorite graphic novel, or comic book, I too am curious to see what happens with the transformation of a book i've read. To see it turned into a movie. So yes, this piece of news does interest me, but I don't come to /film to read about it. Therefore my advice; don't post this stuff If you don't care about it. People interested in Twilight news will read about it somewhere else.

Yes, I did come here because of the Twilight stuff, but then why turn your back on your newly added readers by making them sound like a target audience you don't care about. My liking of Twilight doesn't diminish the fact that I also like 'The Wrestler', or 'The Dark Knight' or anything else you do find 'worthy' to write about.

Why does everything having to do with Twilight bring out the sexist nature in the men on this site, or the catty in the women. Let people read about their movie/book without judgement. I have never read Watchmen (i am considering it though) but I don't make fun of you when a glimmer of news threathens to overtake this site with avid expectant frenzy. I just say; good for you and consider borowing a copy of the novel. (No, I don't expect you to pick up a copy of 'New Moon', although the Werewolves are pretty cool and If done well will be a exiting part of the film).

    That's just my two cents.

Now I will go on quietly reading /film, thankyouverymuch

(loved 'the Wire' live cast btw)
