Mickey Rourke and Sam Rockwell Cast in Iron Man 2

Mickey Rourke is on a roll as of late. His highly praised performance in Darren Aronofsky’s The Wrestler has given the actor’s career a jump-start. Last night it was revealed that Rourke has been added to Sly Stallone’s action hero team-up film The Expendables, and today Variety reports that Mickey is in talks to join the cast of Jon Favreau’s Iron Man 2 as the potential villain.

Ivan is described as “Tony Stark’s Russian alter ego, a heavily tattooed bruiser who is in the arms trade and battles Iron Man in his own nuclear-powered armored suit.” Variety initially hinted that Rourke’s character would be Crimson Dynamo (pictured above), but THR says that Ivan becomes Whiplash, a man “with deadly, technologically enhanced coils.”So I’m unsure which report is correct.

In the comic books, Whiplash is Mark Scarlotti, brilliant engineer and weapons designer who becomes the head of research for Stark International Cincinnati. Scarlotti is lured into developing weapons for an international crime syndicate and then for himself. According to Marvel’s case files, “Whiplash designed two cybernetically controlled whips that could be converted into nunchakus or vaulting poles. The whips could be spun so fast that they could even blow Spider-Man’s webbing away from Scarlotti preventing him from being ensnared. As both Whiplash and Blacklash, Scarlotti used a necro-lash which could be electrically charged by his gauntlets, released from its handle to deliver a concussion charge, or he could turn up the electric charge to its maximum which caused anything it hit, including Iron Man’s armor, to become brittle. He also used anti-gravity bolas, heavy gravity bolas, and various other devices also of his own design. When Mark returned to his original alias of Whiplash, he also upgraded his armaments with a kinetic whip, a cat-o-nine-tails, and a whip made of super conductive filament in order to channel lightning as an offensive weapon.”

Crimson Dynamo is a power armor-wearing Russian agent who first appeared in Tales of Suspense #46. Created by Stan Lee and artist Don Heck, there have been twelve versions of Dynamo over the last 45 years. According to Wikipedia, The Crimson Dynamo wears “an armored battle-suit that serves as an exoskeleton, providing the wearer with superhuman strength and durability. The suit’s outer layer was composed of a carborundum matrix alloy, and is equipped with: hand-blasters that can fire high-frequency electrical bolts; small missiles contained in the back shoulder area of the battle-suit; computers and radio transmitter and receiver; boot jets that allow flight.”

Sam Rockwell is also in talks to play Justin Hammer, a multibillionaire businessman and a rival of industrialist Tony Stark. Hammer first appeared in Iron Man #120 in 1978, and has since remained a frequent adversary of Iron Man. Hammer has a  genius-level intellect and has access to various forms of advanced technology designed by his technicians. He finances criminals, asking for fifty percent of the illegal profits in exchange for any bail costs and weaponry and equipment replacement. Hammer also invented a device called the hypersonic scan transmitter, which allowed him to take control of Iron Man’s armor, causing him to kill the Carnelian ambassador, and set an army of superhuman criminals against Iron Man.

Marvel is still searching for someone to play Stark’s assistant Natasha. Iron Man 2 is scheduled to begin shooting in April 2009 for a May 7th 2010 release.

Discuss: What do you think of Rourke’s Iron Man 2 casting?

  • Guy #1
According to the Hollywood Reporter, Rourke is playing Whiplash and Rockwell would play Justin Hammer. Crimson Dynamo was speculation on Variety's part.
  • Could also be Titanium Man. He was Russian at some point.

To be honest, I'm a little disappointed they chose ANOTHER villain who is essentially a bigger Iron Man. I mean, Iron Monger was fun, but do we really want another fight scene like the last movie's climax?

I was looking forward for them to use a villain who wasn't just Iron Man on steroids. Not that I'm not looking forward to this movie anymore or anything like that.
  • I sort of agree with you, but I'm too much of a comic book (Marvel) fan to not like this.
  • Well, I like Marvel too, but I still think they're are a lot of other options that they could have gone with.

Like Justin Hammer, who it turns out it is (if we are to believe Guy #1). And if Whiplash is in the fray too, then we're just a Blizzard and Melter away from Demon in a Bottle!
  • Guy #1
You don't have to believe me, just go to THR's site. /Film already updated the article to reflect it.
  • Maybe they'll do something a little better this time around like a vigilante Iron Man that goes a little too far with his methods and needs to be taken down a notch. Or maybe even multiple Iron men that try to take out Iron man so they can rule the world with the new found technology.
  • Justin Hammer better be bald.
  • YES!!!!! Who's with me on this! Mickey would KILL this role!
  • Who needs Terrance when you have The Rourke!
  • Having Rourke and Rockwell in the sequel...will make me forget how long and dull those cave scenes were in the first one...so I'm all for it! Marvel and Favreau are really bringing together a quality cast
  • The cave scenes weren't even that long. I agree to a certain extent that they weren't the best part of the movie, but it had to be done or how else would we get Iron Man?
  • well I thought the montage from Incredible Hulk was a great way to explain an origin in a short time...perhaps we'll see that more in the future because I think we've all seen enough of the cliché origin sequences.. they drag down a lot of superhero films...with Comic films now their own genre I hope we don't have to put up with 30-40mins of a film explaining the character... which could be done in either a trailer or montage....the whole point is to see the hero in action isn't it?
  • Clint Barton
The Incredible Hulk montage was done because a Hulk origin story was already done in 2003 with Ang Lee's HULK... MARVEL was just smart enough to know that the viewers wanted to see more action in a Hulk film.
  • I agree, the montage at the beginning was pretty bad ass. I thin that the only reason they did that was because there was already a Hulk movie out 5 years before that sucked so bad that Marvel wanted to show they had nothing to do with it. I'm not really sure if that would work though for a movie that hasn't been shown on the big screen yet, like Thor for instance. I know alot of people don't like the origin story of anything nowadays, but it has to be done because people who aren't fans would be lost and uninterested, therefore making no money for the people who made the movie.

  • Damn straight! If only Marvel would have had their stuff together before Fantastic 4 I think Rourke would have made a perfect Thing
  • Except for Fox did FF4. This is being made by Marvel, who knows what they're doing and doesn't ruin most things the touch.
  • 790
I was hoping chef Ramsey would get the villian role !! Damn it.
  • Being a die-hard Iron Man fan, I am very VERY excited at this news. I'm glad they picked Whiplash, too. It'll add some cool variety to the fights. I hope this is true.
  • ROB
Will Gwenyth Paltrow be back? Is Natasha going to be the replacement for her?
  • I'm pretty sure I heard she was cast for multiple movies. I was also wondering what they were going to do with her this time around though. I mean they can't keep her on the back burner for long.
  • Rourke is great, but I don't know about this. What about them setting up the 10 rings in the first movie? They are just going to ignore it? And what about the climax as Downey Jr. battled a Giant Robot containing "The Dude"? Now we are going to have Iron Man battle another guy in a suit? I'm not sure about this one.
  • That would not be the case if Rourke is Whiplash.
  • True, I was looking at the above picture. I think I still would have preferred Mandarin especially with the reference to the 10 Rings.
  • jackwoods
in a deleted scene from the first movie there are "2 messages waiting from the mandarin" when tony gets back from the middle east
  • This is awesome news both Mickey Rourke and Sam Rockwell are excellent choices. I can't wait until we get some news on The Mandarin.
  • Ben
Not to be a total nerd but I'm almost positive that Rourke has to be Whiplash. Not that I know anything special but in the comic books Hammer (who is confirmed to be played by Rockwell) employed super villains like Whiplash. And Dynamo is way to similar to Obadiah.
  • i don't know. rourke is cool and i'm glad he's getting more work these days, but it also sort of annoys me how, three months ago, the producers of iron man probably would never have even considered him. he seems like a really safe choice to make right now. one of the things about the dark knight is that no one would have even thought of ledger for the joker, but nolan was inspired and saw something in him. w/ rourke being cast in iron man 2, it just seems like a really weak and safe move.

i know i'm going to catch hell for this, so knock yourselves out.
  • You shouldn't catch to much for your opinion. I agree that he only got the role because he's on his way up the acting chain but I wouldn't say it's a weak move on anyone's part. It's very smart by Marvel because who wouldn't want to see some big named actors playing some big time characters from some big time comics?
  • TheCritic
This was awfully sudden. No rumors or anything. What a surprise.
  • I was just thinking that either way, Rourke has a great role in the upcoming sequel. I really hope he is Crimson Dynamo, a Russian version of Iron Man. It would be nice to see how he got the technology to make the suit and what else they can build besides a suit. Maybe a few suits to take on Iron Man, that's where Rhodes can come in and we are introduced to War Machine.
  • Danisgod6491
May i suggest Natalya Rudakova for the Black Widow. Red haired Russian and is beautiful.
  • nice choice, dude. i just googled her and she's covered in freckles. i love it.
  • Clint Barton
Just googled her, she is perfect for the part (can she act though??)...
  • Danisgod6491
She was only in one movie so far and it was Transporter 3. She just starting so why not throw her into a Blockbuster fire right away. She looks the part for the widow, its better her then some other chick who not Russian and a red head. but they'll go down that road for sure because Hollywood never likes a new face or someone who the nationality of the character.
  • I'll agree with you here. Does anyone really think Rourke would have this role a few months ago... I can't imagine that. I love it when they find an actor/actress who is relatively unknown or not foreseen in the role and that person does a great job. Nolan chose Ledger and at the time it seemed like a very odd choice, but now it was a great decision. Although on the flip side, Nolan did pick Katie Holmes and Maggie Gyllenhall...
  • iron man's supervillains suck
  • Yeah, def agree...They DO suck, but I think they can make the best out of it...
  • i hope too man
  • sweet! sam rockwell will play well against downey jr...but up until i see a trailer i'll have nightmares of marvel recasting him as tony stark, still can't get over how they did terrence howard!
  • that's a great point, favreau said he wants to play him as a master-villain, the way the emperor was in star wars, so we should at least get a glimpse of him or a better idea of the movie-verses take on him (hopefully it won't be like jarvis!)
  • Azure Trayl
I'm all for Mickey sporting the Crimson Dynamo, in the long list of villains ol' shellhead has taken on, CD is right under the Mandarin as the guy longest to butt heads with; so it just makes sense to have him in the film. His recent armor doesn't make him look too huge or towering or I.M. and would be a great backdrop to the Armor Wars storyline and has huge potential to incorporate the Demon in a Bottle storyline in it (if even for subtle moments).

As for the earlier recommendation of Natalya Rudakova for Natasha; I'm sorry, but I could not back this up. I saw Transporter 3 and felt her character was very annoying and she did not look at all sexy. I would imagine that the Black Widow would have to have a sultry look but at the same time can size you up and bring you down. If anything, I would recommend that actress who starred as the bond girl in Goldeneye; Izabella Scorupco.
  • Okay, so we have two new villains, a new ally (Natasha), Nick Fury, and War Machine? Is this starting to sound a little convoluted to anyone else?
  • It may right now but when it's time for The Avengers, it won't at all.
  • Nitro
what ever happened to the Mandarin???
  • Favreau says it seems like it's too hard to bring him to the big screen, that's why we only get the reference with the Ten Rings terrorists.
  • I love how Marvel is trying to broaden out the Mythos of Iron Man.
  • If I am not mistaking Justin Hammer hires Whiplash and create a supervillain team...If they go the supervillain route it could turn out like Spider-man 3. But at the same time that might give reason to bring in War Machine like in the comic books. Either way the casting sounds great but out of all the villains of Iron Man I would like to see The Mandarin in Iron Man 2. Batman and Joker, Spider-Man and The Green Goblin, Superman and Lex Luthor, Fantastic Four and Dr. Doom, Iron Man and The Mandarin
  • Clint Barton
Favreau didn't want to have the main baddie as the initial villain (like Spidey vs. Green Goblin in Spider-Man). He wants to build up to it, have the Mandarin in the background pulling all the strings, which will set up the climatic battle.

Also, Mandarin is a major bad guy in the Marvel Universe. Since the rights to Dr. Doom and Magneto are both owned by FOX, Mandarin might be one of the only main villains they could use for the Avengers film.

Does anyone know if FOX owns the rights to the Skrulls too (due to FOX owning rights to Fantastic Four)?
  • gah
Most likely it will be Ultron in Avengers.
