Garrett Hedlund Cast as the Lead in Tron 2.0

Disney has finally announced the lead star for their upcoming Tron sequel. Garrett Hedlund, star of such films Friday Night Lights, Eragon, Georgia Rule, and Death Sentence, beat out Ryan Gosling, Chris Pine and Michael Stahl-David (Cloverfield) for the role.

Disney is keeping a tight grasp on the film’s story details and won’t even reveal the name of Garrett’s character. All that is known is that Hedlund plays a man who is sucked into the computer program and finds himself “retracing the steps of a character from the original movie named Kevin Flynn”, who was played by Jeff Bridges. Bridges has signed on to return for the sequel, as has Bruce Boxleitner. Beau Garrett and Olivia Wilde are also attached. You can read what Wilde had to say about the project in a story posted earlier today.

Discuss: What do you think of the casting of Tron 2.0 so far?

  • &%^@ The casting i wanna know whats gonna be so revoluntionising about this film
  • I agree. I can't imagine that this movie is going to be any more visually revolutionary than Speed Racer, Benjamin Button, or the much-hyped Avatar. And considering that this movie is on track for a 2011 release, there are plenty of other movies that might steal its thunder well before its release.
  • Tron 90210
  • nelson
not my fault if you find him attractive Aqualeo you obviously didn't see death sentence he was a pure bad ass
  • Garrett is Hot. Bet he plays Jeff Bridges son.
  • how is the first movie ? should i waatch it ?
  • Ben C
    Um: YEAH!
  • Are you SERIOUS? You haven't seen it? I could almost understand not seeing "Batman & Robin," but you MUST see Willow.
  • Are you SERIOUS? You haven't seen it? That's almost as bad as not seeing "Batman & Robin."
  • they could cast spencer pratt for all i care, just as long as olivia is in it.
  • Shame. Ryan Gosling would have rocked Tron 2.
  • Slashfan
Yeah, Ryan Gosling is a good actor with an impressive track record- it's strange that he was beat out by anyone, unless it was a money issue
  • I hear that he was going to be busy as Robin in the next Batman...
  • I never watched the first movie, so this is the first piece of news about Tron 2 that has gotten me interested; enough so that now I'll be watching it no matter what.
  • JakePT
Don't forget he was in Troy as Achilles' 'cousin'.
  • Funny, I assumed when Bruce Boxleitner and Jeff Bridges signed on they would be reprising their roles as the lead characters. :/ Somehow this news has me a bit less enthralled. Lets hope my feeling of apprehension is unfounded.
  • I thought so too, but Bridges is a bit old to be an action hero. I think bringing in some one new, with Bridges as a mentor or something, might make it more fresh.

They might just be ghosts in the machine left to guide the n00bs.
All this talk about Tron I now have to put it in my Netque. (Yes, I did see it in the theaters).
  • hm...

Will the CG in this be like in TRON or will they try a new different kind off style to make it look cooler and more modern?

    Meh.
  • Was I the only person that jumped straight onto IMDb.com to search for 'Garrett Hedlund' after reading this article? I did not have a clue who is, nor do I have much faith in this movie living up to anywhere near the genius of the original.
  • I think he was on the Mickey Mouse Club.

As soon as I heard the name Garrett hedlund I knew I was gonna see this movie. And then I realized woah! Tron 2?HECKS YES!!!
I might even go see it twice.By the way anyone who doesnt know the name Garrett Hedlund..I feel so sad for you. He is one if the best young actors out there.I mean if he happend to die in this movie he'd prolly get best actor of 2011.
(watch death sentence, four brothers, and troy you'll see what I mean)I mean he dies in every flicken movie I see him in.
But seriously I'll see this opening weekend!First showing!

You're right...Garrett Hedlund seems to have a knack for dying, doesn't he? I mean, the only movie I've seen that he didn't die in (yet, not sure if Murtagh dies) is Eragon. I'm not sure about Friday Night Lights. Haven't seen it yet- but I will if I have time. I'm sure he can get 2011 best actor if he dies in this movie too...I don't want to watch him die anymore though. I cried when he got shot in Four Brothers. He is good at it ...I guess. If you can apply the word 'Good' to death.
  • Night_star
I did see Death Sentence...and I still think he's hot.
