Disclaimer: I usually refrain from running speculative rumors on /Film, but it’s a slow news day. And besides, I’m not going to pass this off as news. Heck, I’m not even going to pass this off as a rumor. For now, consider this story a fun “What IF?”

/Film reader Jon B brought it to my attention that George Clooney was spotted pre-holidays in Hollywood having a business meeting with director Ridley Scott, and Marvel Studios chairman David Maisel (Paris Hilton was also in attendance, but gossip mags have recently linked the heiress and Clooney, so that’s more likely personal than professional).

Marvel Studios has said that they are interesting in bringing a Dr. Strange movie to the big screen. Clooney looks a bit Strange, doesn’t he? Or might Ridley Scott might direct The Avengers movie? Or perhaps it was just a fun meeting between friends. We know this whole discussion is circumstantial and speculative at best, but in the boring days of early January, I find it a little fun to speculate. So lets pretend for just a minute that there is something more to this dinner meeting.

Discuss: What do you think of the idea of a Dr Strange movie starring George Clooney directed by Ridley Scott?

Would Ridley Scott really direct a B-comic book character? I’d much rather see him involved in The Avengers. Clooney would be uncanny as Strange. Or what about the possibility of Clooney playing Captain America and Scott directing Avengers?

  • lol. Can u actually imagine Clooney wearing those clothes?

    Paris Hilton???
  • Dr. Doc
they really want George Clooney? wow, u can have him Marvel...

no one would take this seriously after B&R
  • when it comes to comic book movies you can't use the comic letter grade and translate it into movies too well. Iron Man is considered a B level hero and we all know how his movie turned out.
  • Peter, you need to call this segment a TMZ Moment.
  • Clooney says to Ridley Scott and David Maisel I want to destroy another comic book franchise like I did Batman. Scott & Maisel reply in unison "We have the perfect project for you!"
  • that kinda funny but I don't think it Clooney's intention to ruin the franchise like he and Schumacher did. I think that he realized that it was a sinking ship and he figured he would throw something weird in the pot and see what would happen.
  • LOL well in all fairness Clooney admits to B&R being bad, and it wasn't his total fault it was so bad- yes he was wooden but not as terrible Arnold and he is a much better actor obviously today (he is awesome). Well this I think we can all say is a rumor and BS! But yes I could picture Clooney as Doc and it would be cool to see Scott do it but I doubt that this would happen. Also Doc Strange is an actual cool character. Whenever I think Doctor Strange I usually think of- Mark Ruffalo and Mathew Fox, I know there odd thoughts but I just picture them as Strange.
  • Rob
I don't blame Clooney for Batman and Robin. I blame nipples on the batsuit, neon everything, Bane made into a mindless baffoon, Arnold as the worst Batman villian on screen ever, Chris O'Donnell as a whiny jealous Batman, a chunky Alicia Silverstone as her Clueless character playing Batgirl, and just a weak arse script.

Joel Schumacher destroyed the Batman franchise in the 90s. Batman Forever would have tanked if it wasn't for Jim Carrey's over the top performance at least making a bad movie watchable. Schumacher felt that Gotham City was this cross between some cheesy 80s music video that overdid Neon and black lighting and the set of Cats the musical. Not that Tim Burton's movies were perfect, but he took any semblance of the Dark Knight influence and went for camp. Schumacher's movies were almost as campy as the 60s TV show.

Clooney or no Clooney, Batman and Robin would have sucked just as bad. In fact, many other actors may have done worse.
  • Square
Still, all that sounds like an enormous shit storm nobody should walk into, Clooney included.
  • Would love to see it!
  • I never would have thought of Clooney as Dr. Strange but it's a good choice. As for the Avengers, I wouldn't mind seeing Favreau keep it going from the Iron Man feel. Although Scott would be a fine choice too.
  • mike
    George Clooney & Paris Hilton?
    What the hey?
  • Rob
    Captain America?
  • Clooney I think is a bit to old for Cap, I still say I want to see Josh Duhmel as Cap.
  • nelson
what is this project # 8 for Ridley lol
  • martin
Wasn't Clooney in New Mexico at that time shooting The Men Who Stare at Goats?
  • gah
Clooney would be a great Strange. Scott doing a comic book film would be amazing. Way better than Monoply the movie. God i hope that never happens. And for such a classy guy, Clooney is always with skanks for some reason.
  • These comic book movies are getting a little out of hand. I'm a pretty huge nerd, especially when it comes to film, but: Who the heck is Dr. Strange? It stinks of desperation from Scott.
  • gah
Dont call yourself a nerd if you dont dig Dr. Strange. Seriously. Don't.
  • the old man
Dr Strange, you know, the Sorcerer supreme. The signature Marvel minor character that seems like a major one. Would I get a big argument that it seems to describe Clooney's career as well. Don't be alarmed, just a hypothesis.

Serious as I can be about this though, I can't decide whether I would like to see a story with a relatively inexperienced Strange or a veteran Strange with Clooney as the star. The thing you have to wonder is, how Mr. Clooney plays against any or many of the other Marvel characters? Strange often appears as a quintessential cross character in the comics. Perhaps there is a bigger question to be answered here. Has the movie industry concluded that the comics industry is the cheapest source, excepting maybe games, for more stories to be produced into films, than the book or the theater industries?
  • May
Steven Strange has never been portrayed as a young man. He's middle aged veteran surgeon when his journey into mysticsm begins. It would also be foolish to disregard Strange as being minor. Watch the BBC documentary on Steve Ditko and it clearly states those comics were hugely popular with the hippie generation due to the psychadellic nature of those stories. Alot of the artwork you know that defined that generation was heavily inspired by Ditko's Strange. Ironically, Ditko hated hippies and was obsessed with the philosophy of Ayn Rand.

Rumor or not I can sort of see Clooney as Dr. Strange....with nipples. I mean, I like a lot of Clooney's stuff but when it comes to him and super heroes I am forever haunted with the image of nipples....those damn nipples.
  • Can anyone remind me what happened last time Clooney was in a comic book movie?
  • Okay guys, I was just having a bit of fun. I actually think Clooney is a fine actor and although Batman and Robin was an abortion it wasn't because of him. I just don't know if I see him in this type of role.
  • nelson
hmm oh yeah last time clooney was in a comic book movie it killed the batman franchise for nearly 10 years till nolan revived the franchise thats all lol
  • If anything, Ridley Scott looks more like Dr. Stranger than Clooney, LOL
  • May
Um....I was under the impression that Joel Schumacher ruined the bat franchise. Blaming an actor for Batman and Robins failings is like blaming the waterboy after football team loses.
  • Marko
Clearly George Clooney is going to star in Monopoly and the Marvel chairman was just tagging along for the ride.
  • Clint Barton
Nothing against Clooney, but a younger actor is needed for the role of Captain America. Steve Rogers was a young man in his early twenties, late teens when he volunteered for the super solider program, and then frozen just a few years later.
  • Kip
He does look like him, got give'em that. I think the thing to realize if Scott and Clooney do Strange, it will no longer be a "B-list" comic book/film/character. Marvel will pimp the shit out of Strange leading into the movie and pushing it hard. People who don't know comics will assume Strange is right up there with Batman/Superman/X men/etc. and boom Strange is percieved as top flight hero and slots into a 100mil on a July weekend.
  • Stank
Remember when Iron Man was a 'B' list Marvel property and Robert Downey was deemed 'too old'??? How did that turn out again??
  • Yeah i agree! Clooney and Ridley will make it no longer a b list comic book hero
  • Tercotta
Scott + Avengers = Pure Awesome
  • nelson
i personally wanted depp as dr. strange
  • Can't be worse than Ben Affleck as Daredevil or Topher Grace as Venom...Plus Ridley and Clooney sound like a good Combo...
  • Clooney as Cap? You've got to be kidding me. How about Cap's dad?
  • And Clooney as Dr. Strange.... Make it happen.
  • wow I need my eyes checked. I thought you said "Dr. Strangelove" and I got outraged at first, then I realized you meant the comic book...
  • Clooney as Dr Strange would be, different to say the least.
  • I could see Ridley Scott directing almost any Marvel movie... it would actually be interesting to see him take on a S.H.E.I.L.D. movie...be it Doctor Strange or Avengers...I'm really enjoying the caliber of actors and directors involved in the recent comic to film projects....It's nice to see most of the studios taking their time and focusing on quality...I think we can all thank the Dark Knight and Iron Man for this (no surprise there)....
  • It's too late for it, but George Clooney would have made an amazing Nick Fury.
  • Austin
Cloony mustn't do any Superhero... he proved since Batman & Robin.
  • Square
Can we just cut Dr. Strange from the Avengers line-up? I mean, would you miss him? Would you???

/Tim Robbins as the president in Austin Powers 2

    *takes a bow*
  • gah
He never said it was true. Those people had dinner together. Thats a fact. The rest is speculation.
  • the sometimes y
i'd rather see just see clooney as sam fisher in a splinter cell movie
  • Marvel is not going to do Dr. Strange right now. They've tasted the blood of an Avengers movie and its tasted all so sweet. If anything is possible then perhaps Clooney as Captain America which I think could work. It would be cool to see Downey and Clooney face off as Steve Rogers and Tony Stark.

My pick for Captain America is still John Barrowman who plays Captain Jack Harkness on Torchwood. I think he would make a perfect Captain America.

It's the Ridley Scott thing that I don't buy. I love Ridley Scott but I don't think a superhero movie is up his alley. It makes sense that they would offer him the job but I don't think he would take it. But dreams do come true don't they?
  • meh
They most definitely will be doing Dr. Strange. Especially since Marvel Studios only owns a handful of its characters, and they need to put mulitple films in development if they want to stay afloat. After Avengers, Downey probably wont revisit Stark and they will need another franchise.
  • clooney as mr fantastic would be cool. rodley scott doing fantasy would be cool.
  • This would be very funny to see.. Having Ridley Scott behind it doesnt hurt..
  • I can think of toy-pushing flicks I'd want to piss all over before this hypothetical slice of celluloid comic action got made... *cough*robosapien*cough*
