A Discussion with The Best Directors of 2008

The Hollywood Reporter recently held a roundtable discussion with the six of this year’s Best Director hopefuls: Ron Howard (Frost/Nixon), Gus Van Sant (Milk), Ed Zwick (Definace), Darren Aronofsky (The Wrestler), Danny Boyle (Slumdog Millionaire) and Clint Eastwood (Gran Torino). David Fincher and Christopher Nolan apparently weren’t available for the sit down. You can watch some video clips from the roundtable interview after the jump. I wish that THR would put the entire thing online, but the most we can hope for is that more clips will be released.

well ain't gus van sant a cute lil shyboy.

great to hear aronofsky and boyle kick some ass.
  • Wow. This made my day.
  • macattack
    Same.
  • Palmer
I see what you did there.
  • Yes they must put the rest online right now.
  • Nick
Seems like every paper and magazine are starting to do these every year. This one's a bit less akward than others have been. Hopefully they'll post some more interaction between the guys because that's far more interesting than the anecdotes they tell to every reporter.

Also wouldn't hurt to get some female directors in there...
  • Water
Yeah, but which female director had any stand-out movies this year? The closest I can think of is Kim Pierce but "Stop-Loss" wasn't that great.
  • Did you forget about Twilight already?
  • I wasn't all that impressed with Gran Torino.
  • peter, please keep an eye out for other vids if they become available. looking forward to more.
  • This is great.
  • i really wish we got to hear from Nolan and Fincher. they're up there with these guys, or at least their movies should be for this last year.
  • what the hell is Ron Howard & Ed Zwick doing there? where is Fincher ,Tarantino & Gondry!
Nolan? he dont make nothing remarkable this year...
  • Tarantino didn't make any movies this year. Be KInd Rewind was, sorry, not a very good movie. It wasn't a critical success nor was it a commercial success. It was creative, but Gondry certainly doesn't deserve to be up there with these guys because of that movie. He has a better one in him. Just wait.
Nolan and Fincher should be there. Maybe they had scheduling conflicts, or they just need to take a much deserved break from shit like this.
Ron Howard is a very accomplished director. He deserves to be up there.
Zwick is not good. He is a one trick pony who does not deserve to be there. Maybe when they filmed this nobody had seen Defiance yet.
  • This year Tarantino "acts" in Sukiyaki Western Django, produce and "help direct" Hell Ride, a whole lot more than Ron "I blow you for an oscar" Howard.
"a very accomplished director" thats what you said of a hack director.Sorry BKindRW was good.
  • Guy, check the title. Read it. I like Tarantino. I like all of the directors that are up there and the directors that you have mentioned (Minus Zwick. I hate Zwick). You asked a question and I gave you my answer. A justifiable answer.
You seem to have a lot of contempt for Ron Howard. However, as much as you don't like him, he is pretty much the definition of an accomplished director. He's won two Oscars, he's directed many very critically acclaimed movies over his career. That is accomplished. He's bound to have his critics, of course. It's unfortunate that you have hated so many of his films, but not everybody shares your view. That is why he is up there.
I hope that helps to answer your questions. I'm glad you enjoyed Be Kind Rewind.
  • gah
Zwick is not deserving of being on that list. Howard actually impressed me this year. Nolan does deserve to be there.
  • evanz
van Zant could be on it for Milk and Paranoid Park, as far as I'm concerned.
  • Where the fuck is Uwe Boll?!?!
  • Boxing match.
  • Aesir
I love this blog, but what's with the constant David Fincher worship? The guy is one of the most mediocre directors out there but it seems like every other post is acting like he's Jesus Christ himself. If any director is missing from this lineup besides Nolan, it's Del Toro.
  • Del Toro? The guy is one of the most mediocre directors out there.
  • Don't see how you are going to call Fincher Mediocre and then suggest that Del Toro should be up there for Hellboy 2. Remember, this is best directors of 2008, so any movies they've made before 2008 don't go to getting them a seat at this particular round table.
You should consider familiarizing yourself with what exactly a director does. If you were informed about that then you would realize just what an incredible director Fincher actually is. Some of the things that he has accomplished this year alone are remarkable.
  • Mikey
Defiance was good, but Ed Zwick seemed out of place with those directors imo. Oh yeah, you had a typo on Defiance there Peter.
  • Zwick has no place in this discussion. He has been making the same Oscar bait since Glory. Defiance was awful, terribly pandering. While watching it, listen really close, you can almost hear Zwick begging for an Oscar. Any Oscar.
  • ha ha definace, i didn't even spot that, good eye mikey... would have been funnier if he wrote definance.

but yes i agree. ed zwick is out of place.
  • Caius
    this is pretty cool actually
they should put more clips, but let Van Sant say something interesting
  • If Fincher and Nolan were here it would've been cool to hear what they say.

    Uwe Boll. I laughed.
  • Good lord, what a circle jerk.

Then again, at least none of them talked about "eating transistors" or "where ghosts come from".

I would definently sleep with Clint Eastwood though. What a fox. Ron Howard however continues to grow more and more gremlin-like as the years pass.
  • That's true. I find it odd that they didn't talk about bringing Robin back into the Batman franchise.
  • It will be nice to get some female directors in there once some female directors actually start making movies on the same level as what these guys make. I'm not saying it isn't possible, I'm just saying that it hasn't been done yet. I hope it gets done. I'd love to see a woman accomplish what these guys have accomplished.
  • andrew
so maybe ed zwick doesn't belong in this crowd, he's still a pretty damn good director.
  • Would have liked to hear something from Gus. You couldn't really even see him most of the time. Arofonsky was by far the most interesting and Danny Boyle too.
I agree with people saying Ed Zwick isn't in this class of director. I watched Glory for the first time last year and it doesn't hold up well at all, I was trult baffled that it is considered to be such a good movie and Blood Diamond was so chock full of EVERYTHING he wanted to say about the Sierra Leone situation it just became suffocating.
  • Where is George Lucas for Indy 4?
