KristinKreukWeb has posted the first english poster for Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li. I know we’re only four days into 2009, but I’m already nominating this one-sheet for Worst Movie Poster of 2009. When we first received the poster over the weekend, I wasn’t sure it was even real. It looks like a bad fan-made photoshop. But it appears to be legit after all. I have a theory that all bad marketing started off with a good idea. My guess is that the marketing guys at Fox saw one of the early Street Fighter video game covers and came up with the idea of using the sillioette of the two fighters going at it.

Not a bad idea. I have photoshoped the actual poster to reflect this concept. It actually doesn’t look THAT bad.Imagine if the lettering was also in black to give the poster a two-color color scheme.

Then some studio executive probably sent over a note saying that the stars need to sell the movie. I mean, its not like anyone has ever played and of the video games in the long running fighter franchise, right? So then they added Kristin Kreuk’s head inside the silhouette, but the rest of the image now felt off balance. This lead to the decision to fill the silhouette with floating heads. What a great idea.</sarcasm> /Film reader Christopher M for the tip.

  • moe
i wonder what the dragonball movie poster will look like
  • B e n - A
It's not a great poster.... but it's not all that bad. Perhaps the floating heads could be repositioned a bit better, but it's Street Fighter for godsake - not Avatar.
  • It does look a lot better without the faces.
  • I agree it does look better without the faces. I guess they wouldn't do that considering it's not about 2 dudes fighting. It's especially different considering its the story of Chun Li and not the actual Street Fighter series. I'm just saying maybe the Chun Li should have been bigger compared to the Street Fighter text.
  • edc
um.. peter, it looks better with the floating faces.
thats a good name for a band.
  • edc
why is gambit down the bottom?
  • walter
you know they got it wrong when balrog is featured on the poster.

also its less than 2 months away and no trailer in theaters yet....this could surpass the other movie.
  • Wow. that is really one shitty poster. It looks like it was put together by a high school frsehman in media arts.
  • youngblaze
why the poster looks like its RYU fighting VEGA and its about CHUN-LI lol

plus slashfilm i got more info about the rating of this film Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li - Will be Rated PG-13

    From Piratecovecomic.blogspot.com:

"Wow. Lots of STREET FIGHTER fans out there! It used to be I would receive a few e-mails per week to talk about PIRATE COVE but lately all I've been getting are questions about STREET FIGHTER: THE LEGEND OF CHUN-LI! Well, it should come as no surprise that I'm not allowed to speak freely about the film or give out detailed information, but I CAN confirm the following:

    1. The trailer that has been showing up on Japanese sites was originally created by Fox, then dubbed & slightly altered for Japanese audiences. When Fox gets the trailer online and into domestic theatres, this is pretty much what you'll be seeing.

    2. The movie is around 97 minutes long and rated PG-13. We HAD an R up until a few weeks ago, but FOX wanted a PG-13 release so we cut out a few moments of brutality. I expect there will be an unrated version available on DVD when that time comes.

    3. For those of you who were concerned, no, Taboo does not sing in the film.

    4. Since the poster has been spotted in theatres, I guess it's OK for me to post one! Enjoy"

also he has posted Vega mask from the film too

  • It's bad, but there are far far worst. Plus the poster might reflect the movie itself.
  • It doesn't look quite as bad in person judging by this photo

    http://www.kristinkreukweb.com/gallery/albums/str...

Still lazy slapping all those heads in there like that though.
  • edward
i can't even comprehend the tagline.
whatever happened to the good ol' days of badass motherfucking taglines?
  • Charles
I don't get it man, what with Hollywood and Videogames ? Why can't they get it straight ? I mean really what is it ?
  • REAL6
Im telling you people, the only good thing fox has is: AVATAR!!!

That's it. I hope they go bankrupt with all their mess like watchman and all the other BS they got going on!!!
  • Seth
They managed to make Kristin Kreuk look unattractive.

    That is so wrong.
  • What. The. SHIT.

Why would they make a poster for a straight-to-DVD movie? I mean, this IS straight-to-DVD, right? 'cuz it totally looks straight-to-DVD :-P
  • That's really a shame, because the movie looks so promising otherwise.
  • Is that Chris Klein?! Gees this film doesn't stand a chance...
  • I still don't know what to make about this film. I haven't seen any good footage yet. Fox better get on the ball if they want to make some money from this.
  • Congratulations Street Fighter, now owners of both the worst poster and trailer of 2009! Can they get the Triple Crown with worst movie? Stay tuned...
  • Guest
remember they got an video game coming out arounf the same time as the movie they might get the worst video game too lol
  • That poster is so horribly messy, the eye doesn't get led anywhere, there is nothing to catch. Very confusing.

Peter, you could keep running nominations of 'best' and worst' things throughout the year and put them to vote during December 09!

This poster is definitely first to be nominated worst poster.
  • Palmer
What the hell is with all these floating head posters! I mean I would rather have a silhouette not showing any of the actors as opposed to these disembodied heads!
  • prophecy_projectz
I must say Peter next to myself (An admitted Kristin Kreuk addict who longs for the day she gets a decent role other than the thankless stuff from Smallville and this movie. Oh how I long for seeing her in a Joss Whedon or Rob Thomas project. Those guys can bring the charisma to any character....well almost) you seem to almost have an intrest in this movie lol...only joking sir.
But seriously I only say that because the only place you see people finding the need to photoshop a poster they are dissapointed in is usually on fan boards for upcoming films (remembers the days at SHH.com when people were photoshopping Bale's Bat suit because it looked too bulky from the pre-Batman Begins days).
I stil say that Dane Cook/ Kate Hudson film has the dumbest poster ever. With Dane blogging that it looks like his face is melting. Because hey that's all I need more of right? More of Dane Cook screaming about how insecure he feels.
  • prophecy_projectz
This movie really has a bizarre marketing approach. I guess they (Fox) know its bad and are going for minimal damage as distributors (and when Fox thinks you're shit...you must be shit!). Frankly Im suprised they even are releasing it in cinemas. The only reason this movie is being made, I believe is so it can tie with the release of the Street Fighter 4 video game release in February. There seems to be an all out marketing blitz for that film with comics, graphic novels and re-releases of previous animated adaptations and movies to DVD (Peter could you please get Adam to review Street Fighter 94 when it comes out on Blu-Ray next month?......High Definition glory I tell you. Now THAT will make the Dark Knight look like Strawberry Shortcake). So this movie is nothing more than a tie in for a video game rather than the other way around.....which is strange.
Oh well, technically if Im playing the game of great expectations, this movie probably has the potential to dissapoint me less than Watchmen or Terminator 4 ( I say technically.......key word there). I'll just watching for my future wife Kristin Kreuk (that does sound sad just typing it lol) and the LOL'z for high wire effects.
  • There's a lot wrong with the poster, but damn couldn't they have chose a better font. Too plain. I want that video game cover font. Well, atleast there's one recognizable street fighter character in the poster..if that's any redeeming quality : .
  • Furyon
Please Peter, this is not the worst Poster to come out. You cant go placing a label like that just because you did not like the trailer or because YOU believe the movie will suck. It is unfair, and false. The poster does not look that bad. Yes the poster you made is better, but it does not show anything really about who is in the movie.

And also, you made HUGE drama about how "The wrestler" was such a great film and it is the best film in a long time, i have to disagree totally. The film was very slow and at most points very boring. Maybe on your next post you should place that under thye title, "Most Hyped up Films That really suck"..
    -Peace
  • well I assume you don't watch many small independent films.....sorry if the amazingly sad story didn't keep you interested as it did with the majority of people who saw the Wrestler...maybe you'll watch it again sometime in the future and will have another opinion on it.. I really enjoyed how raw and scaled down it was...
  • Furyon
Ok, just to let you posters know, i understand the film in its all and i really enjoy Darren Aronofsky's films. I just found this to be very boring at parts, and the story was easy to predict. And NO, im not a wrestling fan, i think its all a joke. This film was well done in showing us the rise and fall of this great wreslter, but like i said a very boring film that only had one level. And im not the only one who agrees, im sure if you made a poll you would also see that im not alone here.

Just recently i had the chance to watch "Slumdog Millionaire", now that was a great film, and by far the best of the year. I loved "The Dark Night", but with the budget they had (plus Heath Ledger), it wasnt hard to make a great movie. So i hope i havent stepped on too many peoples toes, and to end this all, i think the Street Fighter Poster really isnt that bad..
    -Peace
  • Rockme
I feel the same, The Wrestler was boring, Slumdog Millionaire on the other hand was a great experience.
  • Worst post ever.
  • correct: worst POSTER ever.
  • Yeah guy you really need to watch The Wrestler for how he has had to deal with life and how his career went from the top to the bottom in just 20 years. It sounds like you went into it thinking you were going to see Wrestlemania or something.

Also, this is Pete's blog so I'm sure that gives him the right to be funny or not whenever he feels like it. We all get the joke but I guess there is always that one person that never reads the comments and is a first time visitor.
  • Furyon, I'll repeat this again -- my "Worst Idea Ever" headlines are for dramatic and comedic effect only. We've posted probably 25 posts with "worst ____ ever" headlines over the last six months. It's a play on Fanboys and an obvious reference to "Comic Book Guy" from The Simpsons. And No, I really don't believe this is the worst poster ever.

And if you didn't get The Wrestler, there is no accounting for taste. :)
  • These are like the funniest comments ever. And my favoritest, hot messiest part of the Street Fighter poster is Chris Klein's eyebrow.
  • I'm sure the poster is from some sort of expo in either Europe or Asia...so it's just early promo artwork...I think the marketing team will come up with a flashy poster campaign in early Feb...I have no doubt we'll be seeing character posters
  • DigitalMe
Nope, it's the US poster. I've seen it in a few theaters already.
  • I agree with you. It does seem like an early poster from somewhere other than the states. I really hope we get to see a good poster soon.
  • WHAT?! international posters are always better!
  • Maybe to you but to me they're always too different. Especially the ones with the different languages where I have no idea if its a tagline or the title. Actually it all depends on the movie.
  • @Landfill

Too different? That's your complaint about international posters? You must be kidding.
  • Not a complaint, just an observation.
  • to help you with the tagline/title conundrum: the fonts are usually different :P
  • Well thanks for the info. Now when I see a poster for an upcoming movie that has stuff on it I can't even read, at least I'll know which is the title and which is the tagline. Once again, thank you.
  • The most attention this movie is going to get is the posts on movie blogs. Kristin is single-handily maiming her career, not that I care, she's not a very good actress and annoys the hell out of me.
  • SuperDan
I think the poster looks kinda cool. Could be better.
  • I don't understand why they would have a poster featuring Vega, who is arguably one of the coolest and most popular characters of Street Fighter, 1) getting his ass kicked and 2) getting his ass kicked by someone who isn't even the main character.
  • I half way agree. Vega is cool and all, but shouldn't it be Chun-Li "kicking" him in the face not a Shotokan-type (Ryu or Ken) punching him in the face since its a Chun-Li movie? (BTW if it is Ken or Ryu in the poster, then, yeah, Vega would be getting his ass kicked)
  • the old man
The Duh factor is over a million here, Agreed! OH, wait you can't have a decent Chun Li [kick arse] pose without a decent Chun Li! I guess they were smart enough to figure that out. Come on Fox, did you forget the "Terminator" lesson of the 80's. If you can't get someone to act the part, they should at least look the part.
  • Just on the title treatment: way to suck all the dynamic flair and any sense of vital nostalgia out of it. Could it be any more 'generic action flick' in its presentation? Sheesh.
