First Look: Harold Ramis’ The Year One

We’re still trying to catch up on some of the photos that were released in last week’s issue of Entertainment Weekly. Above is your first look at the upcoming Harold Ramis (Caddyshack, Groundhog Day) biblical comedy The Year One (I’ve heard it has in fact been retitled from Year One to The Year One). When a couple of lazy hunter-gatherers named Zed and Oh (Jack Black and Michael Cera) are banished from their primitive village, they set off on an epic journey through the ancient world.

The film also features Paul Rudd and David Cross, who play Cain and Abel, Hank Azaria as Abraham, Christopher Mintz-Plasse (aka McLovin) as Isaac, and Oliver Platt as a High Priest. Based on an original idea by Ramis, and a screenplay by The Office scribes Gene Stupnitsky & Lee Eisenberg (yes, the guys who are writing the new Ghostbusters movie), The Year One is scheduled to hit theaters on June 19th 2009.

Michael Cera looks like Newt, from Aliens.

seriously....when the hell will cera hit puberty? If his reason for holiding out of arrested development is that he won't fit in because he looks too old, i call BS...he still looks 15
  • With a stellar career in dressing up like a caveman with Jack black, who can blame him for holding out on a AD movie.
  • The plot and cast list sounds something out of a modern Mel Brooks flick. Count me in!

From everything I have read about this movie this is like a prequel to Life of Brian and/or Wholly Moses, only not as funny. And Wholly Moses wasn't that funny. Life of Brian is a classic though. Basically Black's and Cera's characters will be involved in all the stories in Genesis. Just like Wholly Moses had Dudley Moore follow Moses around and Life of Brian had Graham Chapman being mistaken for the messiah following Jesus. Supposive early test screenings had this thing bombing.
  • This movie doesn't sound that bad. It's got enough funny people in it to make it worth watching.
  • Yeah, it has the makings to be rather funny flick. Let's just hope it lives up the potential the cast and crew have going in.
  • I really wonder about this movie. The writers and director seem awesome, but I'm a little hesitant about Black and Cera. Black's persona is kind of wearing thin, and Micheal Cera tends to play basically the same character in all his movies (variations on George Michael Bloom). I hope with innovative writing and directing, they can pull it off. The idea has potential.

  • Yeah, I kicked myself when I remembered that. It's been a long time since Arrested Development was on the air.
  • Ditto! Great director -- love Black, but he needs to widen his net a bit, no? And Cera...well, his one note and 15 mins are just about up (not sure his appeal in anything new...just one persons opinion.

  • I also heard the director had this in mind for awhile now but never got around to making it. I can't wait for a trailer to see if this is any good.
  • Likewise, I'll wait for the trailer before I form an opinion.
  • I'm not the biggest Jack Black fan, but the plot sounds like a fairly interesting idea, especially if The Office guys are writing it.
  • Yeah the Office is always funny. Plus you got the guy that made Caddyshack. This movie has great potential.
  • I'm tired of Jack Black, so I'm not very interested, but a trailer could change my mind and the premise of the movie does have potential. If Jack Black can play a character without tossing in a fart joke or segment then I might give it a go.

The pairing of Cera and Black seems odd, but maybe it'll work and maybe Cera will play a different character, one can hope. I'm not completely tired of the kid, yet.
  • I read about this a few days ago. I was wondering when you'd guys would cover it since it's an interesting idea and cast. I'm looking forward to new pictures!
  • I guess its hard to judge the quality of the film by looking at a photo from a comedy

  • Its not that hard...I just did it twice.
  • thanks for agreeing, I guess there's always those people that hate my comments. man I got it rough.

"You know nothing of my work."

    Family guy reference accomplished ; }
  • Oh. My. Fucking. God.

    Family Guy reference?
  • REAL6
Reminds me of caveman in the 80s.

    In Ramis we trust!!!

Now if he can get the gang back together for Ghostbusters 3 that would be dope. But leave fattycake Rogen and Aplaw out of it. They are not funny!!!
  • Name
You think Rogen and Apatow is not funny?? hello? Have you even seen his movies? Have you seen "Freaks and Geeks"?
  • REAL6
Yeah ive seen both their movies. I'm not impressed. Geeks was ok, it was nothing to write home about. But thats just my opinion.
  • Bombing because if the religious agenda. Right now, we live in a world that doesn't allow movies that spoof religion! The Christian agenda ruins the movie...just look at Golden Compass.
  • The bombing reviews are probably because of the religious agenda. Right now, we live in a world that doesn't allow movies that spoof religion! The Christian agenda ruins the movie...just look at Golden Compass.
  • Rob
Or maybe it was because the movie was really bad. I think it is a big leap to say there is some Christian agenda. It isn't like The Year One spoof religion per sea from what I can tell. Bill Mahr openly bashed all religions including Christianity (or especially Christianity) and as pointed out, Religiousness got a lot of good pre-release buzz. I know it is almost ten years ago, but Dogma got good early buzz. Christian special interest groups usually donounce movies like this, not send review to Ain't it Cool News.
  • caleb
really? religulous didn't do so hot at the box office, but it got generally positive reviews, especially in contrast with expelled: no intelligence allowed.
  • MIND DANCER
Anyone read Douglas Adams? (The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy) Premise sounds like story from Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy. Two main characters, Arthur and Ford Perfect are thrown back in time to the beginning of Earth. Playing to hilarious and satirical lengths, both stupidly struggle to survive on their own in the ancient world while observing the primitive ways of their brethren.
  • Anyone read Yahweh? (The Bilble, Ect)
Premise sounds like stories from them, oh wait.

But yeah I get what you mean. Don't think there will be Scrabble involved in this though.
  • MIND DANCER
    Ha. Scrabble is a possibility!
  • religulous didn't get box box office for many reasons...
  • Looks GREAT!
But I've seen that photo before...

    My Second Look... =]
  • Family Guy reference? This is just sad. That is just the perfect sad ending to a pathetic conversation.
  • "You know nothing of my work."

    Also an Annie Hall Ref.

  • yes. that is what I was referring to
  • agreed.
  • With this cast, I'm hoping for another Anchorman.
  • JB is going to kill it in this movie like he does in every other one. For those of you who are concerned about Mr.Black always playing the same character take a closer look at the span of his work. High Fidelity, Be Kind Rewind, King Kong....I didn't see that romantic comedy where he pulls Kate Winslet but I'm guessing it wasn't his usual shtick. This movie is gonna be funny hopefully something in the vein of History of the World Part 1.
  • I'm so sick of white frat boy movies.
  • They should have just remade Caveman.
  • Elissa
If Paul Rudd's game, then I'm game.

I'm more hung up on the title than anything. Year One is just so snappy. THE Year One is awkward and seemingly unnecessary.
  • gah
David Cross and Paul Rudd are worth admission price.
  • Hahaha this looks pretty funny got the cast but ill wait on a trailer
  • The Burg
mmm sounds a bit like the ringo starr/dennis quaid classic Caveman to me.... still that might be a good thing.... love the cast
