New Photos: Where The Wild Things Are

Entertainment Weekly also has a couple new photos from Spike Jonze’s big screen adaptation of Maurice Sendak’s classic book Where The Wild Things Are.

Max Records plays Max, a disobedient little boy sent to bed without his supper, who creates his own world — a forest inhabited by ferocious wild creatures that crown Max as their ruler. The cast also includes Catherine Keener, Max Records, Mark Ruffalo, Lauren Ambrose, James Gandolfini, Catherine O’Hara, and Forest Whitaker.

Where The Wild Things Are hits theaters on October 16th 2009.

  • I cannot wait for this film! Spike Jonze is the man and I flippin cannot wait to see what he does with this story.
  • Mr B
I really hope they at least give us the original version on the dvd.
  • EXCITED!!!!
  • So what ended up happening..did the tone and story get totally changed, did they let Spike keep his original vision, or did we get some sort of compromise?
  • I'm pretty sure I read somewhere that they let Spike keep it the way he wanted it. I really don't know why it's taking so long for it to be released but it's been awhile.
  • It seems like this movie's taking forever to get here.
  • It is taking forever! I was really excited for this film, but after all the back and forth and seriously pushed back release date my excitement has waned. I hope it turns out well, the picture above looks good and I'm a fan of Jonze, but I'm a little worried.
  • I just figured whenever if ever I finally get to see some real footage my interest level will go up again.
  • This movie looks and sounds awesome. I cannot wait.
  • edward
    nothing ended up happening.
spike had the test screening to get pickups that he himself wanted.

    nothings changed.
thanks for covering this peter, i was wondering when you would! :)
  • Photos are a bit 'more of the same', nothing we haven't seen before, yet they do not fail to impress! This one is definitely high on the films to look forward to in 2009 list.
  • Conrado
I can't wait for this film! My second most anticipatd film of 2009 after Watchmen.
  • I definitely want to watch this movie. There is a book I want to read that is coming out this year that updates this classic children story to this time and age.
  • Wow that's cool. So what's the name of the book that updates the old story? Will it still have the title "Where the Wild Things Are"?
  • Landfill, here are the details. It seems Eggers wrote the screenplay for the film, and he is also going to publish an adult version of the book when it comes out:

  • Thank you for the link Shevonne.
  • I read the book when I was boy, hardly remember it though but this looks like it could be really good. Don't want to get too hyped about this but the more I hear about it the more elated I get.
  • Takes me back to the good old days...loving this, can't wait to see it...
  • Palmer
So why did they reshoot the whole thing? Because parents are afraid that their kids would get nightmares? I just hope the studio hasn't tampered with the movie too much.
  • Andrew
They did not reshoot the whole thing. Just normal reshoots that any movie would have. The studio got freaked at parent reviews at screenings but, in the end, cooler heads prevailed and they let Spike do his thing.
  • Smacks
They didnt re shoot the whole thing. They studio wanted him to at first because they had a different movie in mind then the final product of jonzes. But the studio smartened up and let the movie be how jonze imagined it. At least that is what i heard.
  • Never been a fan of Jonze, but I am a huge fan at heart of fantasy films, whether they be for adults or children, I just love that creation of escapism to a purely different and new land and 'WTWTA' is shaping up to be one of those films. Mind I haven't read the book (is it based on a book?) that this film is based on, around, or taken from, so I don't know how this is shaping up to those who have.
  • Its a children's book and I would suggest popping into Borders or Barnes and Noble to read through it, it'll take you like 10 minutes. I loved the book as a kid and when my own kid was small I scared her with a reading of it...heh.
  • Yeah it's based off a book. A picture book, something I read when I was in elementary school. Don't get me wrong, I really want to see this film, but I never thought I'd see the day when it actually became one.
  • dude, you need to read the book... the illustrations are gorgeous
  • mmm...i got a bad feeling about this one
  • I freaking love Spike Jonze. Can't wait for this movie.
  • Alex
Photo on the right is about 8 months old, but just saying....
  • I laugh at people who think Watchmen will be a better film than this.
  • To tell you the truth, Watchmen's source material is alot better than this one. I mean yeah I loved this book as a child but I never would have thought it would make a good movie.
  • I think there is a lot of potential for this children's book to make a good movie because with the book a lot of it had to do with imagination. I think Jonze's creative mind can bring a good adapation to the big screen.
  • Jonze: Being John malkovich, Adaptation
    Snyder: 300.

    Hmmmm
  • But it Watchmen, come on dude, it's alan Moore's greatest accomplishment. I know I reallly didn't want to see it in film form but from everything I've seen so far of Watchmen, it's going to turn out great. As for this film, I really enjoyed the story when I was little, hope it turns out good but as for now I'm sticking with Watchmen because they've actually got things into motion and hopefully we'll get to see it in a few months.
  • Whats the hype about spike jonze?
  • I'm not really sure, I like the guy because he's making this into a movie. He directed Being John Malkovich if that helps to why everyone's adoring him. also the Jackass films.
  • marz
october???!! jeez and i thought maybe it was coming out sooner then that because ..um didn't they start filming in like '07?if not,it sure feels like it.dont think iv'e ever seen a movie in production, and actually still coming out, take so damn long.
  • At one point during post production last year the producers thought about reshooting the entire film. I haven't a clue as to why but after that they decided Spike's vision was right on with what they wanted.
  • Albert Brodsky
Spike Jones understands art. He'll make the movie we want, and there won't be some lame, added, emo character anywhere in this film. I have confidence in this project.
  • We need a trialer.
  • I want to see the trailer SO BAD, TOO!!!!! This is one of my biggest film expectations of 2009
  • I can't wait for this movie. I can still remember how much I loved the book as a kid. Great cast and Spike Jonze has got great vision.
  • Raf
This movie is going to be so damn awesome! I can't wait!
