Our friends at Total Film sent over this mock “For Your Consideration” trailer advertising Frank Miller’s The Spirit for The Razzie’s Worst Movie of the Year Award.

  • skaught
and well deserved it would be.
  • I personally can't think of one film more deserving this year. I'd vote for it.
  • Disaster Movie. The Spirit can be #2.
  • I'd agree, only Disaster Movie was taking the piss out of itself, whereas THE SPIRIT was trying to be 100% serious. Honestly, it was. It's not even a comedy!
  • Dr. Doc
The Spirit wasnt trying to be 100% serious, Sam Jackson once compared it to Looney Tunes, so you are wrong there.

it was a bad movie! i personally loved it and thought Macht did an awesome job and was a pretty bad ass big screen hero
  • "The Spirit wasnt trying to be 100% serious"??
...could have fooled me. If this indeed the case, why are you in the minority that realize this? Poor marketing? Or scapegoat?
  • Tariq
I think it's strange that people feel that way. I thought it was obviously not trying to be serious. I don't think it was a good movie, but if anything it wasn't serious enough...
  • My point is, I don't care if the film turned out to be a damn musical... the posters, teasers, interviews, images and trailers all screamed %100 serious. I can't fathom anyone going in thinking The Spirit wasn't going to take itself seriously. The marketing never indicated otherwise.
  • Tariq
Well, I understand now. The marketing was misleading then, I agree. I thought you were referring to the film itself. In any case, the film was still very bad. I just think people should keep in mind that it was meant to that over-the-top and corny.
  • I'll agree with that because people were assuming The Spirit might be a little good. It turned out to be something terrible. Everyone knew that Disaster Movie was going to be terrible and expected nothing good from it.
  • I think that was too nice.
  • The movie really wasn't that bad.
I have seen far worse films in my time, spirit doesn't even come close to touching those.
  • Agreed. Maybe it's just the hype and expectation that lead people to believe it was something grand, hince people calling it the worst film of the year. Maybe disappointment would be a better word.
  • It's funny to think it can't even win a Razzie. It failed so utterly that it's not even bad enough to be considered the worst.
  • I loved it. I have no idea what people were expecting, but the final product is fucking great. I love the mixture of 60's Adam West Batman camp with new millenium green screen wankery. Can't wait for the Blu-ray! Btw, I loved Speed Racer, too... for what that's worth.
  • I want to see it just to see how bad it is, but then again..I don't really want to waste my time.
  • A Paradox. o_o
  • I'm actually excited about seeing The Spirit. I'm a big fan of Miller and his style. Plus, how can you go wrong with that many hot girls in one film.
  • I'm actually excited about seeing The Spirit. I'm a big fan of Miller and his style. Plus, how can you go wrong with that many hot girls in one film?
  • You will see.
I gave it a shot. Miller is just a terrible director. He ran this one into the ground. It was as if a first month student filmmaker was put in charge of a multi-million dollar Hollywood production. Like I said, you will see.
  • "It was as if a first month student filmmaker was put in charge of a multi-million dollar Hollywood production."
Nicely put. If you think about it, that is pretty close to the actual scenario.
  • I'm pretty sure the only reason why I would watch this film is for the ladies. It really is the biggest reason why I'd watch it.

I really enjoy watching the look and style of a Frank Miller movie but I'm not sure if this is worth the price of admission.

In this age of digital information, theres a reason I still have two subscriptions to physical magazines and now I remember why Total Film is one of them.
  • DavidChenFanClub
I cant believe there are people on here defending that horirble movie!!! Seriously, you all need to have your heads examined. The Spirt was one of the worst films of the last decade.
  • You need to watch more movies.
  • Agreed
  • Indeed, you sir, are an ignorant.

I do agree that the Spirit was pretty bad- just not the worst of 2008. Does a movie titled Disaster Movie ring a bell?
  • Palmer
I'm surprised no Ben Lyons quotes were used for the sake of irony. I mean he usually praises terrible movies.
  • Right? I love that they used Ebert's quote. There are tons of others that totally destroyed this movie too.
  • Matt
I wouldn't say Miller is a terrible director, just a misleaded one. When he's not directing his own work or something he wrote in a comic, it doesn't tend to work out well. I would say the worse thing about the spirit is that it was written by Frank Miller. But its also directed by Frank Miller, and the movie looks fantastic. The women are hot (even if they do seem bored sometimes) and Sam Jackson is livin' it up on screen. I would say more a guilty pleasure than an outright disaster.
  • What Frank actually wrote the script? Damn.
  • That's pretty funny. I wonder if The Spirit will be the first to sweep at this years award season?
  • Don't know why you were being dug down, I think it's very possible for The Spirit to sweep.
  • Henrik
I still think Disaster Movie is gonna get this one.
  • Oh dont even get me started on that movie...
  • spalootic
Ok, I liked The Spirit. I think too many people are expecting another Sin City. Sure it's really weird and kind of dumb, but look at the movie as a whole, it's more of a comedy. It's a superhero flick that just doesn't take its self too seriously. How many movies can you find lines like...'Toilets are always funny!!" and, "You're dead like Star Trek!"
  • Haha i do want to see this film now...only cause of all the hype its had! Maybe blu-ray? Nahh ill wait till its on free-to-air
  • t;om
Ha ha! It so bad me want see now! Ha ha! So much advertising me want go now! Hurrr hurrrr!

Now bad good! Good now bad! Up now down!
  • Haha 'Worse than Battlefield Earth'...NOTHING is worse than 'Battlefield Earth'...
  • Bull
At least you can laugh at Battlefield Earth.

    Two words: Pluto Nash
  • I assume Frank Miller likes eggs, but not on his face? :P Terrible, terrible film, especially the "Guten tag!" scene where the whole cinema in which I was seated erupted in laughter, never mind the visuals which just confused me (they were neither different nor special, just annoying as hell, it seems as if he just hit the editing room and thought "I'll make a lot of things change colour, and add flashes here and there, the audiences love flashing lights...right?").

I know when a film is bad, when I'm pushing to find something I actually liked about it, and the only thing I can think of is that Scarlett and Eva looked quite delectable in their scantily clad clothes through-out...
  • mcgruff
that Roger Ebert quote is incredible
  • Lance Uppercut
This flick gets my Howard the Duck Award for 2008 . . . makes Sky Captain/World of Tomorrow look like a work of inspired genius.
  • Well that is what I was wondering, so thanks for the reassurance.
  • Brian from OR
I saw the movie last weekend. And there are somethings I actually like about the movie. The design of the movie is great and I thought a lot of the stars did a decent job for what Frank Miller gave to them. The problem and its a big problem I had was Samuel L Jackson. His version of The Octopus was so OVER the top that it pretty much took me out of the movie. I was having a ok time with the movie until the Nazi scene kept on going and going. That scene alone for me just killed it for me. I think even a first time director would have told Sam Jackson to tone it down a bit.
  • Or maybe Miller told him to be over the top?
  • I don't know... i still kind of want to see it. I know that is terrible, but I think it could be the sort of mind-numbing entertainment. I shall definitely wait for its dvd release however.
  • this actually makes me want to see it now.
  • Ever since the first trailer I had no interest in this movie because I thought it looked awful. I do have a morbid curiousity because the reviews are so bad, but I'll wait till it makes its way to cable.
