New Photos: Pixar’s Up

Entertainment Weekly has released a new photo from Disney/Pixar’s Up. The photo is the rendered result of the recently revealed cover to the upcoming book, The Art of Up (seen below thanks to pixarblog). The $40 book is currently available for preorder on Amazon for $26.40.

Official Plot Synopsis: From Disney•Pixar comes “Up, a comedy adventure about 78-year-old balloon salesman Carl Fredricksen, who finally fulfills his lifelong dream of a great adventure when he ties thousands of balloons to his house and flies away to the wilds of South America. But he discovers all too late that his biggest nightmare has stowed away on the trip: an overly optimistic 8-year-old Wilderness Explorer named Russell. From the Academy Award®-nominated director Pete Docter (Monsters, Inc.), Disney•Pixar’s Up invites you on a hilarious journey into a lost world, with the least likely duo on Earth. Up will be presented in Disney Digital 3-D in select theaters.

Up hits theaters on May 29th 2009.

  • I reckon it looks fantastic!
  • I feel the same way about this as I did about Ratatouille. At first i'm not excited but I know I will love it.
  • After Wall-E Pixar has a lot on their shoulders. Ill still go see this movie cause i am a crazy pixar fan! Still waiting on the Ultimate Pixar on Blu-Ray to be released!!

    "I LOVE YOU MR. FREDERICKSON!"

Hold up. First no dog... then a dog...

The most unlikely TRIO on Earth!
  • oh my god, that old man is SOOOO freakin' adorable, haha. and i don't even like most old people.
  • i hate old people, but this old man is cool
  • Pre and ordered
  • I am excited about this movie, and so is my wife. We love everything pixar has ever made. I even loved Cars.

I'm certainly sold on this. This is probably my most anticipated film of the new year, and I'm really glad that Pete Docter is directing this. I mean, for the past six years, we've just had Andrew Stanton, John Lasseter, and Brad Bird, all of whom are great. However, while I love WALL-E, I also love Monster's, Inc., and I'm quite interested in seeing more of Pete Docter's directing style. I really like the premise of this film, and I love the fact that the protagonist is an old man. Pixar just may be making what will turn out to be one of the best adventure films ever made, just like WALL-E is one of the best sci-fi/romance films ever made. I would be surprised if up contains certain references or homages to classic adventure films like the first three Indiana Jones flicks and Treasure of the Sierra Madre. I'm going to do my best to make sure I don't look at any new footage and don't learn too many extra plot details.

btw, I'm incredibly excited for Toy Story 3 (who isn't?), but Up will do until then, especially if it turns out right (which I'm sure it will).
  • Pixar just has the magic formula for some reason..hopefully this one lives up to Cars and other films of theirs.
  • "Up" is an adventure coming of age story for 78 year old man who travels to the 'undiscovered' parts of South America and ends up fighting monsters. How does that premise not sell you!?
  • pixar to continue its success at the box office.
  • This was Empire's exclusive first by the way before EW had it.

Very much looking forward to this though.
  • I'm sure it will be good, but I just can't get excited for it. From the moment I read about the concept of WALL-E, I was sold. This just isn't doing anything for me...at least not yet.
  • I think the movie looks sweet and cute, not exactly not a mind-blowing film like Wall-E
  • Yeah, I would say the same. I think the animation looks beautiful, but I haven't seen or heard enough about it to really hook me. Seriously, does anyone actually have a real plot synopsis for this movie, something more than "old man ties balloons to his house, and there is a boy scout too"?
  • I'm a bit the same. The clips made me laugh and the images look fantastic, but I'm just not opening-weekend excited by this... which usually means I skip it altogether and just see it on DVD in the end.
  • The idea of IMAX should at least peak your interests in seeing it in the theaters yeah?
  • My nearest IMAX cinema is hours away. There was one open in my city but it went under. People were just very 'meh' about it. I can understand why. There are a huge amount of people who are happy to skip cinema altogether and wait to watch it on the small screens through their DVD players. These people will not pay EXTRA to see it on a bigger screen. IMAX only works in high populous where geeks will bother to show up. This is also why the attempt to revitalize 3D gimmick will die in the ass before long.
  • Wheres the closest IMAX to where you live?
  • As far as I know, Sydney is the closest at the moment. I did just read recently that a new IMAX is being built here where the other shut down... so we'll see.
  • I can see the delima. I do agree that this film probably doesn't have the buzz that Wall-E did for most people, Monsters, Inc. was my favourite Pixar film before Wall-E and this carries the same director so I guess I'm just hoping it's as good. Gotta admit though, the concept sounds crazy enough.

  • I am looking forward to it. Pixar is a machine of making excellent films. I have a feeling that the machine still has a few golden gems to pop out before it loses its touch. This looks like it should be one of those films.

    characters revealed!!!
    a talking dog, Dug,
a blue giant female bird, Kevin ,and
    the villain, Muntz (ellie's inspiration)

conclusion : the best pixar movie ever and the best in 2009
(based on that picture, characters, and a CHUD review)

  • I'm just excited to have something I can take my 5 year old to. There usually isn't too much to chose from for really little kids. And I love all Pixar films.
  • The old man is definitely adorable. I wasn't sure how I felt about this film at first, but from the stuff we've seen lately I'm looking forward to the flick.

is there a iMax at Sheffield.. hoping the new transformers is gonna be out there ... :)
  • That new still looks great. Typical Pixar quality...should be a fun time. Carl and Russell seem like an unlikely match, but I guess that'l make for that much more of an adventure. Interested to see how they work-in the dog and bird on that cover of the Art of Up book, as well...
