VOTD: The Predator Rap

Remember the Robocop Rap video we posted in December? Turns out that The Anomalies (Mouthmaster Murf and Dj Mayhem) created another rap video earlier in the year based on the 1987 sci-fi horror thriller Predator. You might have seen it, but we totally missed the video the first time around. The video is six and a half minutes long and took almost 9 months to create. You can download an MP3 of the music on thejailhouse.net or visit The Anomalies on Myspace. Thanks to neverfearimhere for the tip.

LOL: The Fake 20th Century Fox Twitter

While everyone on Twitter was bitching and complaining about the Fox/Warner Bros Watchmen legal mess, someone asked out loud if Fox was ever going to create a twitter account.

Quick Rant: I never really understood the concept of movie studios with twitter accounts. I mean, I understand its another way for them to pimp their wares in another social medium, but why would anyone who doesn’t write movie news for a living follow a movie studio on twitter? It’s basically like opting in to daily spam alerts (and I guess you could argue that since you are opting in, it’s technically not spam, but whatever).

Anyways, sorry about that rant, but it had to be said. So someone out in cyberspace grabbed a hold of the idea and decided to create a fake twitter account for 20th Century Fox. What kind of tweets can you find on said Twitter page? Here is a look at some of the funnier entries:

  • Why have we kept “20th Century” in our name? Because that’s when we last made consistently great films. Call it nostalgia.
  • Oh, and if you’re wondering, we’ll be sitting on the rights to the Halo movie for 20 years too.
  • Don’t worry about that whole Watchmen thing, we’re pretty sure you would’ve hated it – we’re just trying to protect you! :-)
  • We’re not sure how Slumdog Millionare and The Wrestler slipped through, but don’t worry we’ll see that sort of thing won’t happen again.
  • In ’09 look for more great movies like Street Fighter, Dragonball, Night at the Museum 2 and Tooth Fairy!

I’m sure that Fox’s lawyers aren’t busy enough with the Watchmen lawsuit to send a Cease and Desist letter to Twitter in the coming days. So check out the Twitter Account while it still exists. And remember, you can subscribe to my tweets at Twitter.com/SlashFilm.

Netflix’s New Shipping Process

Netflix has announced a change in their shipping process:

“We have 55 shipping centers throughout the U.S., including Anchorage, Alaska and Honolulu, Hawaii. Previously, if the movie you wanted was not in stock locally, we sent it from another shipping center. Since this DVD was shipped from farther away, it took longer to arrive and you could end up without a DVD for a few days. This was especially inconvenient for our members on 1-disc plans. Now, if your first choice is not available in your local shipping center, we immediately send the next locally available movie in your Queue, and whenever possible, we also send your first choice from another part of the country.”

The change took effect on December 11th 2008 and applies to all current Netflix subscribers. Now if only Netflix could expand their Watch Instantly selection… I think I’d be willing to pay more for a premium subscription, if it had access to a wider selection of films.

The Winning Season Added to Sundance 2009 Line-Up

It’s not unusual for last minute selections to be added to the Sundance Film Festival line-up in the weeks leading up to the Park City Festival. Last year it was Hamlet 2, and this year it is screenwriter turned director James C. Strouse‘s second feature film The Winning Season (note: this news has been rumored elsewhere, but this is the first time Sundance has officially confirmed the report).

The film stars Sam Rockwell as an adult alcoholic misfit brought on to coach his local girl’s high school basketball team. Rockwell has described the movie as Bad News Bears meets Half Nelson meets Hoosiers. It’s worth mentioning that Strouse’s semi-autobiographical first screenplay Lonesome Jim involved a story line where Jim (played by Casey Affleck) has to take over his brother’s girls youth basketball team.

The film’s cast also includes Emma Roberts, Rob Corddry, Shareeka Epps and Emily Rios. Festival director Geoffrey Gilmore calls the film “a completely gratifying cinematic drama marked by sharp dialogue and perfectly toned performances.”

Rockwell’s Sci-fi Thriller Moon also premieres at the festival. Roberts’ Lymelife is also screening at the festival. The Strouse penned Lonesome Jim premiered at Sundance in 2005, and his directorial debut Grace is Gone played at the 2007 festival.

Watchmen: Warner Bros says “Settlement Unlikely”

Not that we didn’t already expect this but, an attorney for 20th Century Fox told AP that the studio is planning to continue to seek an injunction to prevent the release of Watchmen. U.S. District Court Judge Gary Feess ruled last week that Warner Bros had infringed on 20th Century Fox’s rights to develop and distribute a movie adaptation of Alan Moore’s Watchmen graphic novel.

A Warner Bros.’ attorney told the AP that hhe believes “a trial is necessary and a settlement unlikely.” As of right now, a trial is still scheduled for January 20th to decide the remaining issues. If Warners and Fox can’t reach a settlement before that date, it is likely that the Judge will grant the injunction which will at very least push back the release date of the comic book movie adaptation until a settlement is agreed upon.

Who would have thought that a movie trailer for 20th Century Fox’s Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li wouldn’t look that bad. I dare to say that all the intense action in this Japanese trailer actually makes me want to see the film, just a little. Then again, I’ve always had a theory that anything in Japanese is at least three times as cool (look at some of the Japanese versions of classic movie posters for example).

We also don’t get to see any scenes involving dialogue between the main characters, or for that matter, we aren’t even explained/shown anything that can resemble the plot of the film. Add onto that the fact that 20th Century Fox has been on a really bad run as of late, and the fact that video game to movie adaptations notoriously suck. I’m still pretty sure this film is going to suck (likely not as bad as Dragonball) but the trailer gives me a sense of false hope. Please share your thoughts in the comments below!
