The Weinstein Co has finally set a release date for Quentin Tarantino’s next film. Inglourious Basterds will hit theaters on August 21st 2009 — that’s right, the film got a late Summer slot! I never imagined Basterds as a Summer movie. For some reason it seems like the type of movie which should be released in late Fall, during Award season. This notion probably comes from the fact that every Tarantino film thus far (aside from Grindhouse and Kill Bill Volume 2) have been released in the October-December time frame.

But the Summer release date is a vote of confidence. When Quentin announced the film at last year’s Cannes Film Festival, he said that his goal was to return with a finished film in May 2009. The August release date means that Tarantino will probably have an early cut of the film feady for this year’s festival.

Official plot synopsis: Inglourious Basterds begins in German-occupied France, where Shosanna Dreyfus (Mélanie Laurent) witnesses the execution of her family at the hand of Nazi Colonel Hans Landa (Christoph Waltz). Shosanna narrowly escapes and flees to Paris, where she forges a new identity as the owner and operator of a cinema. Elsewhere in Europe, Lieutenant Aldo Raine (Brad Pitt) organizes a group of Jewish soldiers to engage in targeted acts of retribution. Known to their enemy as “The Basterds,” Raine’s squad joins German actress and undercover agent Bridget Von Hammersmark (Diane Kruger) on a mission to take down the leaders of The Third Reich. Fates converge under a cinema marquee, where Shosanna is poised to carry out a revenge plan of her own…

  • If it's anything like his old films, It'd probably do well. He does have the following to propel it to box office success. Then again, he's been pumping this movie for quite some time, not sure if his "Golden Cloud" still surrounds him.
  • From the still photos, I can see it being polished enough to be a summer blockbuster. I see no reason why a tarantino film with his fan base couldn't be a hit. Personally I would like to see him falter a little bit. I think he has done his best work when he didn't have a huge backing.
  • Um... that... is a powerfully bungled wish.
  • Falter? Like with Grindhouse?
  • I don't know if I consider Grindhouse a falter, it was more like a work of arrogance and at the same time love. It didn't do financially well, but it also wasn't panned by those who viewed it.
  • So is this a confirmation that it will not be two separate films?
  • Kokushi
Bean, so how long you think the film will be?
  • Kokushi
    Ben. wrote the name wrong
  • Palmer
I wouldn't mind this as being a summer film, it kind of makes sense. I mean a bunch of renegade soldiers shooting up Nazis. Why wouldn't it be a summer film!?
  • "But the Summer release date is a vote of confidence."

That or continuous proof that TWC has no idea how to release films.
  • You make an interesting point.
  • I think one very important factor helped this film achieve such a release date: the safety of Brad Pitt's billing.
  • The script is 165 pages long, so my guess would be to expect it clocking in somewhere around there. Nothing says summer movie release like a 3 hour WWII film not directed by Spielberg.
  • I hope this is going to be a blockbuster, but in all honesty.. I see this being just a little better than Grindhouse in the office. I don't know why.. but I just think it wont do as well in the box office. But I know for a fact I will love it.
  • I disagree! Brad Pitt warflick...bums will be on seats
  • Unofficial Basterd
232 days; why does it have to be so far away?!

But isn't late August usually the time when the more mediocre to bad summer movies are released, with the exception of the occasional good comedy?
  • They're probably releasing it then because it doesn't look to be a very competitive time at the box office.
  • I'm f*cking crazy happy we're getting this so soon. *Crosses fingers and throws a glass against the wall.
  • Its ironic how much the production of this film mirrors what they actually say about war: 99% waiting, 1% intense action.

It's a very good script; perhaps his best, so I think it'll do well for him with regards to getting people in to see a 'Tarantino' film. It has all the Tarantino-esque elements in place but unlike Death Proof - this one has a story; therefore it's actually interesting. My only gripe would be that he needs to get it well paced as the script is long and it could put many off. Otherwise expect good stuff come next August.

I cannot wait to see this movie. It is by far my most anticipated movie of '09.
  • I can't wait for this film.
  • We really need a trialer.
  • I want to see a trailer so bad, too.
  • Me too, It's killing me that I only get to see images. When do you think we'll get a trailer for this?
  • I enjoyed the Kill Bill movies but it seems he will never have another masterpeice like Pulp Fiction. This looks like it could be close to that though, can't wait.
  • I think Grindhouse would've done way better if it was released in the summer. This one....I thought fall/winter too. Maybe Tarantino's just stumbling along the wrong dates?
  • THIS... NEWS.... IS... AWESOME!!!! I might be going to Cannes this year and this is a pretty good reason to venture out there!
  • I'm just happy this movie finally got a release date.
