Bollywood is Remaking Back to the Future

Is Bollywood remaking Back to the Future? RealBollywoodNews is reporting that Akshay Kumar and Aishwarya Rai have been cast in Action Replay (yeah, horrible title…), a film which will be unofficially based on the popular 1985 Robert Zemeckis film Back to the Future. BTTF.com was able to contact Future producer/screenwriter Bob Gale who denied any knowledge of the production.

Bollywood has a long history of “borrowing” film storylines from popular Hollywood films (google “bollywood star wars”). The ages of the two leads (41 and 35 respectfully) confirm that it won’t be a close adaptation. Action Replay will begin production in February 2009.

  • That is pretty funny. It is hard to argue with Bollywood remaking films.

The travel back 50 years only to discover that their country was always a pile of rocks. Doesn't sound very interesting.
  • Oh please. I saw "Ghajini" which rips off Memento and Amelie. Horrible movie, by the way. Bollywood is so embarrassing, and I'm Indian.
  • That is why its not a big deal for me. Most aren't good, and chances are I won't see it.
  • exactly. I've also seen Bollywood ripping off The Matrix, The Wedding Singer... I can't remember what else.
  • are you kidding me?
if there is ever an attempt to recreate back to the future, i will die from a broken heart.

Good! It's about damn time other countries started ruining American classics. We do it to them enough.
  • LOL
  • Oh god. After seeing slumdog millionaire, bollywood needs to wake up. When a white englishman makes a better Indian film than any other bollywood director ever, you know there's an inherent flaw in that silly formula.

I grew up watching bollywood films, but after maturing into the pompous film geek that i am, I find it extremely hard to stand even an hour of any of them. Bollywood fail.
  • I agree. There's only like, 5 good movies coming out of Bollywood every year, while hundreds of other films are crap.

Anyway, you should just watch low budget Indian films-- they are usually way better. or as they're called, "Parallel Cinema."
  • Hey you have to hope for the best. Just look at the bollywood version of Spiderman/ Superman.

Now just imagine that with Marty and Doc Brown... Classic.

Well, though it will most likely be horrible, at least we don't have to see it.
  • Squid
    .... 41 and 35 RESPECTFULLY?
  • deathmetalhero
I would wreck that chick. just gotta throw out my hetroness in cyberspace
  • Amen!
  • I guess we aren't ready for that yet.

But our kids are gonna love it.
  • they better hit 141.622 kilometers.
  • This isn't really a big story although. BTTF was so long ago...

    Action Replay...

    seriously? That is horrible...

Am I the only one who hates the word "Bollywood"?
  • "Bollywood" was coined in the early 1990s, the letter "B" is for Bombay (now called Mumbai). I don't see anything wrong with the name, haha. There's LOLLYWOOD (Lahore, Pakistan), Tollywood (Tamil cinema) and even Nollywood (Nigerian cinema).
  • joshi38
Don't forget Dollywood... because of Dolly Parton.
  • they should call the porn industry "Xollywood." mmmm
  • joshi38
Pronounced "Zollywood" I'd assume... hmm, sounds somewhat Indian again.
  • Nope, I'm with you there. Word grits my shit.

This won't be the first time Bollywood have *ahem* borrowed from Hollywood. All of you do yourself a favour, go to Youtube and search for Bollywood and Matrix for a shameless shot for shot rendition of the Lobby scene.

My mother likes me to sit down with her every so often to watch her favorite Bollywood movies with her and I always enjoy it because if it's not really predictable it's incredibly illogical, and sometimes downright stupid. It's the same feeling one gets from a "so bad it's funny" movie.

And yes, occasionally a Bollywood movie will be good, but since our culture is so different, we expect our movies to be over the top, cheesy, badly acted and have 4 hours of dance sequences... it's just to be expected.
  • I agree, Bollywood movies can be FUN, but don't expect any masterpieces. Bollywood is good if you are bored and looking for mindless entertainment with songs and dances.
  • joshi38
The thing is, most people born and raised in India, and so brought up with Bollywood movies simply wouldn't enjoy a movie that we, as westerners would consider to be good .

I seem to remember my mother once telling me that movies made in Bollywood that aren't in some way musical, tend to do horribly at the Indian Box office, so there's always that level of undeserved cheesyness that people have come to expect.

I think the most fun I can have watching a Bollywood movie would be watching it and imagining how a Western director might have done things differently... more often than not Bollywood isn't far off the mark... they never really get there though.
  • very true. but all my relatives in India prefer Hollywood over Bollywood, but that's because they might be film snobs, like me... LOL
  • joshi38
Yeah, my parents like Hollywood films as well, but they can still appreciate a Bollywod film... something I've never been able to do.

New inventions only originate in western civilization.
  • Best idea ever!
  • Action Replay? Isn't that a cheat-device for the PS2?
  • I'm sure a friend of mine will blow his head off when he hears about this. Would a suicide threat stop them from making this movie?
  • This sounds really entertaining. And let's all remember--at least it's not some Hollywood schlock like Brent Rattner trying to remake it. Oh, and people, chill out about Bollywood being "bad." It doesn't try to be good, it aims to be cheesy, fun, and outrageous and succeeds on all levels. Watch Kuch Kuch Hota Hai--it'll be the greatest 3 hours of your life.

Well, this is some sort of karmic payback (ha! pun intended) for American cowboy movie writers and directors ripping off Akira Kurosawa wholesale for flicks like The Magnificent Seven, A Fistful of Dollars, etc., not to mention the very idea of the nameless, well-armed protagonist wandering the countryside.
  • You realize that the influence goes both ways right? Kurosawa borrowed heavily from western literature and cinema.
  • I can't wait to see the big musical numbers!

Hey, I've seen some Bollywood films, and while some are good, most are utter shit. The fact that Bollywood films outgross most Hollywood makes me lose a little hope in humanity.
  • marz
all i know is.. Aishwarya Rai has got to be on of the sexiest, most amazing actresses out there.i might not know how to pronounce her name or even spell it ( i just copy and pasted this time around)but what ever movie she's in..be it hella corny or not, folk are gona show up.
  • you should see "Devdas," "Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam," and "Raincoat," some of her finest works (and really good movies, too).
  • will they have song and dance? will the dancing involve 40-50 dancers every time? will the main character be a big hairy strong dude with sunglasses and a denim jacket?
  • haha. of course
  • well in that case, count me in!
  • you would probably enjoy "Ghajini" then. a really terrible (yet mind-numbingly entertaining) Bollycrap movie with suspense, romance, murder, and everything else you ever dreamt of.
  • Action Replay? hmmm.... I don't know how I feel about this. Either splendidness or dump could result out of this idea.
  • Just no ok bollywood just no!
  • Freakin Bollywood, can't think of anything original.
