Andrew Lloyd Webber has announced that a Phantom of the Opera sequel is coming at the end of 2009. Phantom: Love Never Dies will be set a decade or so after the original installment, and The Phantom (yes, he’s still alive) has relocated to, then very popular, Coney Island of Brooklyn, New York. The production will have a historic simultaneous opening in three cities — on Broadway in New York, London’s West End, and Shanghai.

Webber isn’t revealing any names as far as who has been cast as the Phantom or Christime (who will also be in the sequel) but does say that the roles have been pretty much cast at this point. The Times of London says that Hugh Jackman and Gerard Butler are possible candidates. Butler played the Phantom in the 2004 film adaptation. Jack O’Brien (The Full Monty, Hairspray) will direct the production, with sets designed by five time Tony Award winner Bob Crowley (Carousel, The History Boys, Mary Poppins). If the production is as big of a hit as I expect it to be, I’m sure a big screen Hollywood adaptation won’t be far behind.

  • Zombie of the Opera.
  • I believe I found out the new title of the sequel from the source itself. http://www.flickr.com/photos/beyondthetech/315290...
  • I hope to god this doesn't actually happen. Also, Gerard Butler was a HORRIBLE Phantom.

I...GREATLY...DISlike you!!!! *sobs while clutching Gerry's picture closer* (She didn't mean it!! It's ok!)

These days when they're dong broadway musicals of tv shows, and movies, why not try a sequel to THE most popular musical of all time? At least since ALW is doing teh composing, it'll have the same sound as th eoriginal. And really, it shold be pretty decent; i think that at least Broadway can put on a good show as oppose to Hollywood that seems to be quite hit and miss

Phantom is THE most popular musical of all time??? If you combine London and Broadway I thought Cats ran the longest. Are you talking greatest musical of all time? Because that title clearly goes to Les Miserables.
  • Tercotta
    But it's no Les Miserables.
  • Does this feel like a sell out to anyone?
  • What a big fucking joke. Andrew Lloyd Webber is such a fucking shameless whore who has sold out Broadway and London's West End in the name of overrated, crappy musicals. "CATS" is one of the WORST musicals.

and this is coming from me, a theatre major in college (FYI: I dig dramas, but I dislike musicals).
  • yep, didnt you hear about FIGHT CLUB the Musical? Oh, and Spider Man the musical too? Fucking pathetic what Broadway has become today.
  • TheMarquis
The phaaaaaaantomoftheopera is theeeeeere...to steeal your moneyyyyy. do do do do doooooo. bum bum.

What a monstrously terrible idea. I love the first one. The ending is perfect. There's no need to do this. It's a total cash-scam.
Are all the artists in today's industries running out of ideas? All we get are sequels and remakes, on broadway and in movies, or crossovers such as the aformentioned 'Spiderman the Musical.' Blechhh.
Can't we do things that haven't been done? (I'm a little more lenient in the 'novel to play/musical. Les Miz, Phantom, and Wicked are all prime examples). Must we make a sequel that does not need to be made? I understand the industry is hurting, so they want a guarantee money maker, but seriously, Phantom 2?
Two things will really make me mad:
    1. Christine leaves Raoul for the Phantom.
    2. This takes the place of the original on Broadway.
  • No nO non ono no no nono! Do not want! Why o why would ALW do this? It's not like he isn't making money - Phantom is still on stage. Still, I might have to watch this train wreck if it makes it out of its first 3 cities.
  • I, for one, thought Gerard was HORRIBLE as the Phantom. Would not like to see him reprise the role.

You're nuts. Gerard did a GREAT job. His voice has a rough, untrained quality which is precisely what one would expect of the Phantom and I read on the soundtrack notes that this is whatt Webber and Shumacher were looking for. Not only that, Gerard added a tremendous amount of passion to the role, not to mention that he is is sexy as hell.

This really sounds like a terrible idea. I love the Phantom but I've always considered it a complete story. I really can't imagine this being worth it.

Wow, I hope this isn't the start of a new trend where we resurrect characters from novels just to make a quick buck off a sequal! It makes me dread the day someone thinks of making a sequel to the Great Gatsby that focuses on the continuing adventures of the a Zombie Jay Gatsby and Nick Carraway....oh dear I'm rambling now.

  • they're already doing that, we just haven't heard about it yet.

I'm excited, and nervous about this. It sounds like it could be really great. There's a book out called "Phantom of New York" and this kinda sounds like the same idea. Hopefully Gerard Butler will get the part. It would be strange for someone else to play the Phantom in the movie.

Okay, seriously, this is just "The Phantom of Manhattan," (which was a book written as a sequel to the musical) and it was a horrible book, and Andrew Lloyd Webber himself said he hated it. But now he needs money, and they aren't gonna ressurect The Starlight Express. Goddamnit.
  • Aradawn
This is the worst idea I have ever heard. What in the world is Webber thinking? :...
  • This guys still alive??

Dear Sir Andrew, I beg you NOT to create this musical. There are probably millions of us who cried at the bittersweet ending and bitched about how Christine should have gone with the Phantom, but I think we all knew in our hearts that this ending is the best one. When I heard about a Phantom sequel I pretty much puked in my mouth. I believe that a Phantom sequel will have the same effect at the Star Wars prequels: cheapen the originals and piss off the current fans.
    Sincerely,
    A Phantom fan since 1992

I was not pleased with the book, it was poorly written but the plot idea had merit. However, I am a little disturbed by a brief synopsis given about what the musical will be about since it will be alterted from the book. It says the Phantom, after wrecking havoc in the fair goes home and 'makes love to a Christine look-alike automaton!" That's just disturbing and nowhere near what Sir Webber portrayed the Phantom as in the original. So, I'm both looking forward to the sequel since I love sequels to the Phantom story, but at the same time dreading it with a synopsis description like that! Perhaps, Sir Webber should have done a prequel? Though, I'm all for Gerard Butler performing the lead role! I loved him in the movie!

How could they think of even consider of using Gerald Butler again as the phamtom, he can not even sing he butchered the main song of the movie " The Music of the Night " he should have never been given the role when Andrew Loydd Webber had other actors who can sing and act like Hugh Jackman, Antonio Banderas, and Ewan McGreggor, but instead he picked a guy who can't sing.
  • i love it
guess what? he CAN SING YOU DINGBAT!!!! he can sing, he looks very hot, AND he can play the emotions right! SHUTUP!
  • SelphieFairy
    Talk about FANGIRL.

    and no, he cannot sing.
  • Kat
YES I have been waiting for a new phantom movie!!! I have herd rumors but it is good to confirm them. The plot sounds ok lets just hope that they don't kill the name. If they put Gerard Buttler then I don't care it will still be good for me. I don't know what you are talking about Vicki because he is a great singer who would you prefer I bet you can't think of anyone better.
  • Trista
OMYGOD!!!!!!!!!! If Gerard Butler does NOT play Phantom our dear little Andrew will have to answer to me. >:( You bet your ass I'm a Fangirl! If it's wrong to love the movie and hate the stageshow... I don't want to be right. THEY BETTER NOT RUIN THIS MOVIE!!! I bet they will though...
    :((((( USE GERARD BUTLER!!!!!
