  • It is always sunny
The opening looks like Sweet D's video journal from IASIP.
  • Green Man!
  • The opening couple minutes didn't get me, but the rest was great! The girl who plays Kate is super hot, Toni Collette does great with the different personalities. The only gripe I have is they pushed the aunt/husband affair way too hard in that one scene. Overall, quite good, I'll definitely watch ep 2.

I do think the show will get better once the directors* and all involved learn how to progress the scenes further , especially because of Ms. Cody's different take on pretty much everything. ..I also am reminded of East Bound and Down , in the slight messiness of it , but also like that show , with it's off the take moments it can a great show.
  • yea i agree ,
    Be
  • Be.
  • The show looks really good. I think that the show will do really well and will be around for awhile. I can't wait to see what happens next.
  • once again, users outside the US get the shaft.
  • i'm sure somebody can bootleg it for you
  • do you live in the states?

    ok, so:

-collette is a badass, and the rest of the cast supports her well. her husband is the perfect 'love you no matter what' casting for the role.
-cable t.v. is EXTREMELY competitive right now. i can't think of another time when there were this many amazing shows on HBO/SHO. so what worries me about this show, is that it's only a 1/2 hour; some may prefer this, but i'm in for the 1 hour shows, i think it truly tests the story, and gives time to let all aspects come alive.
-i think the number of personalities they chose to start with is good, however as time/seasons go on, i can see these 3 'alters' getting a little tired. they are very basic personalities, and it'd be nice to see a very ambiguous, non-stereotypical personality come into play. maybe one that doesn't even speak english? i dunno.
-whatever the case, i hope they really push the envelope on these personalities, as the entire show hinges on how interesting they make them.
-btw, i'd really like to know the detailed specifics of cody & spielberg's involvement.
  • Diablo Cody and Speilberg are both executive producers of the show. Cody is also the writer of the FIRST episode (the one you just saw), but she said that she's not going to write all the episodes.
  • also, Speilberg originally came up with the idea for the TV show and I read somewhere that he approached Cody to get involved with the show.
  • Perfect example of why pirating WILL occur: "Full episodes of Showtime programming on SHO.com are not available from your location."

  • amen.
  • Hahaha amen to that

good stuff...I look forward to seeing where they go with it.

Contrived and annoying. Extremely self conscious. Diablo obvioulsy still cannot get over herself. She's still a one trick pony (so far) and it ain't that great of a trick. Of course, series often start off a little rough before they find their legs. So it could turn around. But I wouldn't bet on this one. Hope they don't end Season 1 with a cliff hanger...
  • oh you know they will. they always do

    *suspense music*
  • Anybody know when the show is airing on television? Knowing our luck in the UK we won't get this show till the second half on the year!
  • maaannn John Corbett is so fucking sexy
  • OK. So she only remembers some things when she's an alter ego? She just sort of picks and chooses what she remembers? Not positive, but it seems like she shouldn't be able to remember anything between personalities. Wouldn't that be how that condition goes, the whole multiple personalities thing? Hopefully they will explain more about the condition as opposed to just coming up with quirky characters.
Also, in the end, right after they say Buck is left handed, Buck gives a noogie to her son with her right hand. Wouldn't a left handed person noogie leftie? I hope the actress doesn't always overlook small things like that.
Overall it was OK, but plot wise (not including the concept of the multiple personalities) it was the safest thing I have ever seen. Went for such obvious gags to get the audience on their side, like the asshole boyfriend (definition of 1 dimensional) who gets beat down. It's very cliche in my opinion. It's like Diablo is trying to seem edgy without taking risks.

There should be plenty of Emmy nominations for Toni coming up.
  • "Wouldn't a left handed person noogie leftie? I hope the actress doesn't always overlook small things like that. "

or maybe it's the camera. sometimes images are backward onscreen....
  • Angry,
What did you think of the show? You haven't said yet. I'm waiting on pins and needles for the review.
  • i'm watching it. Its different from what I envisioned when I read the script. I really don't like the children's personalities at all. If I was one of the kids, I would be REALLY upset for havin a crazy mother, but the kids seem so calm and normal with Tara acting crazy. It just doesn't fit with the story.
  • They have lived with it their whole life, you really expect them to be mad all the time? It was obvious they WERE upset about it, especially the daughter, but you can't always be angry, and you learn coping strategies - same with any family dealing with mental disorders.
  • is it me or does it feel like Angryboomstick is being paid to promote this? ABS, are YOU Diablo Cody?
  • haha nah, I just happen to be a huge Cody fan :-)
  • seanahan
    my condolences
  • Mr B
    I liked.

The only thing that stuck out as being obviously Cody's was the boyfriend. Her knack for picking up the idiocies of teenage boys is excellent.

It's also to have some faith in Speilberg restored. I finally got around to watching The Mummy 3 today and honestly found it less cheesy than Crystal Skull.
  • Other than the actions of Buck, I thought it was dreadful. Kids who have parents that have any kind of mental problems aren't inclined to "go along with it" and be happy that their parents are delusional to things around them. Just didn't jive with all of the other Codyisms you see (hipster parents, douchey boyfriend, effeminate and wise beyond years siblings, etc). It read on the page lighter than what was presented which at times seemed really dark. Well, it definitely fits with the mold Showtime is trying to place on the cable landscape. Infinitely better than 'Kath & Kim' for damn sure.
  • guess you've never lived with a parent who has integrity and a type of split personality disorder. i thought something so dear about th eshow was how the treated it so tenderly. a true loving family who figures out how to get by because they realize the good things out way the bad. the show has some funny moments and i'm sure the seasonal arc with showtime will be real interesting. i'm really digging this show.
  • Rob Martinez
    That was surprisingly fantastic.
  • Nicholas C. E.
very good stuff msn great writing.
  • That was extremely well done. I thought going into it I wasn't going to like the Buck Alter but he ended up being the funniest. Crown moment was Marsh's outburst. Very good show, glad I kept Showtime after Dexter. I got something to watch on Sunday's now. :D
  • this show is great, i loved it when Buck fought that gaijin bitch - i wanted him to say "My name is Buck, and I'm here to fuck" haha
  • That was utter crap, I couldn't even finish it.
  • Sarah
What's a password to watch it VIP?
  • Sarah
    Never mind
  • Mike
I signed up to be a VIP but I can't figure out the password. What am I supposed to do?
  • We covered a lot of ground in this first episode and I enjoyed our first foray into this family's world. I know nothing about multiple-personality disorder, but I suspect that it was a little sugar-coated here. However, I think that Cody is great at bringing the absurdist funny to a touchy situation - for a film & TV culture that demands so much reality, sometimes it's fun to look at the lighter side of serious subjects. And perhaps those people with MPD will watch this and say, "see? we're not all like Ed Norton in Primal Fear." I also found the kids to be a little too stable, but I'm sure we'll see the true colors in the subsequent episodes. Showtime has really stepped it up in its competition to HBO's reliably incredible programming and I think "Tara" follows that trend. I'm looking forward to the season!
  • gina
really enjoyed it! smart, funny & interesting. LOVE toni collete. my favorite part was also watching marshall beat down the jerkoff bf. looking forward to the rest.

I have this disease and is really isn't fucking funny at all; it's because I was raped when I was three years old. Here's somebody's post from an advice column:

    Talk about Tasteless...

DEAR MARGO: I was just made aware that Showtime has decided to pick up a new comedy by Steven Spielberg entitled "The United States of Tara." This comedy will be about a woman with DID, dissociative identity disorder. This disturbs me greatly because DID is caused primarily by extreme abuse or even torture of very young children. This is not a disorder that is caused by the biochemical structure of the brain. Making a comedy about it is much like saying the end result of abusing a toddler can be funny. My younger sister has DID and has spent her entire life trying to understand what was "wrong" with her, attempting to get competent help and trying to live with this complicated disorder. She is now 42. It is very difficult to watch one you love deal with different personalities and never know which one you will be encountering at any given time. This is not comedic material. The people with this disorder have suffered greatly, both at the hands of others and within their own minds. Making a comedy about this would be the same as making a comedy out of the kidnapping and torture of a child. I am heartsick and don't know if there is anything that can be done.

    --- E.

DEAR E: If your information is correct, I agree that such a show is insensitive in the extreme. It beggars the imagination that someone would attempt to make a funny version of "The Three Faces of Eve." Some intrinsically sad situations can lend themselves to humor, but this does not sound like one of them. I suspect you have ties to organizations that are interested in DID and suggest you e-mail blast everyone you can think of to let Showtime know how you feel. You could very well succeed because enough people up in arms have caused networks to reconsider programming in the past. Good luck.

    --- MARGO, PROACTIVELY

So fuck you steven spielberg and diablo cody. You suck. I hope you get a terminal disease and somebody makes fun of you.
  • Spongebong
Lola learn to take a joke and laugh in life. Jesus it's just show If YOU dont like the show u have what 300+ other chans to watch? get a life!
  • Adam
Spongebong, you are a douche. You're telling someone to lighten up and take a joke because they're upset about toddler rape. Wtf is your problem?

My foster parent had DID. She didn't have other personalities, but she did disassociate when she felt that she was in unsafe surroundings. It was more like watching someone become reserved and working on auto-pilot. What she went through early in her life to cause this disorder was absolutely no laughing matter, although she did talk about DID itself on easier terms. Not everyone with the disorder *has* to feel one way or the other about it though, and trying to chastise that poster for not being invisible enough and just taking it without comment is the height of ignorance.

I wanted to watch this to see how they handled the disorder. They didn't make fun of it exactly the way I was thinking they might, but making a comedy out of it is a tricky thing that is bound to cause problems with people thinking they understand DID and can take it lightly. There's a difference between acceptance of people with DID and making fun of it.
