Who would have thought that a movie trailer for 20th Century Fox’s Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li wouldn’t look that bad. I dare to say that all the intense action in this Japanese trailer actually makes me want to see the film, just a little. Then again, I’ve always had a theory that anything in Japanese is at least three times as cool (look at some of the Japanese versions of classic movie posters for example).

We also don’t get to see any scenes involving dialogue between the main characters, or for that matter, we aren’t even explained/shown anything that can resemble the plot of the film. Add onto that the fact that 20th Century Fox has been on a really bad run as of late, and the fact that video game to movie adaptations notoriously suck. I’m still pretty sure this film is going to suck (likely not as bad as Dragonball) but the trailer gives me a sense of false hope. Please share your thoughts in the comments below!

Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li hits theaters on February 27th 2009.

  • I've loved Street Fighter since the games and the anime. I am excited to see this one with my kids and have them embrace Street Fighter as well.
  • J.D.
The BEST Street Fighter vids have already been made by CollegeHumor.

Trust me: Google "Street Fighter: the later years"

There are 9 episodes --- so golden!
  • I'll have to check these videos out. Thanks!
  • Sorry Peter, I'm the exact opposite. I was really pumped for this until today when I saw the trailer. I hate to be a complete hater, but it seems like a real miss-use of a brand, similar to Dragonball. I have trouble understanding why companies fight for the right to use a brand or IP, when the final product has very little (or nothing) to do with the original work. Don't get me wrong, I'm all for seeing alternate views on a beloved franchise, but I have trouble seeing the reason why they would even bother using the Street Fighter name if it seems it has nothing to do with the games/comics/anime.
  • I'm not too familiar with Streetfighter but that was certainly was a badass trailer.
  • I'm sure something was explained in that glut of Japanese voice-over.

Also: this movie should just be 2 hours of action sequences. They're kidding themselves doing anything else.
  • looks better than i thought it would
  • Is that saying much? lol
  • starscream9289
You know, at least in the Van Damn movie the actors actually looked like the characters they where supposed to be portraying.

You know who the guy on 0:09 is supposed to be? That's supposed to be M. Bison.
  • the old man
Well on this one I have to agree. Additionally, they should have gotten someone like Tomoko Kanda or Xin Li Cao to play Li. Sorry but Kristen Kruek isn't developed enough to be Chun Li.
  • Isnt Chun Li supposed to be chinese?
  • yeah, it's a Chinese name, but Streetfighter has diverse characters from different backgrounds.
  • killerchopsticks
Kristen Kruek is half chinese >>
  • Guest
Kristen Kruek is half chinese i remember people complain about Kristen Kruek when she played Lana Lang in smallville sayin shes not white shes chinese she cant play Lana Lang
  • Yeah... this looks really bad. Where's Clark?
  • If no one has said it yet. street fighter taken to the streets sorry had to say it. I would hope for the cool street fighter music from 2 would be cool but nope.
  • meh, the movie doesn't look that exciting. It looks like another cheap straight-to-video movie...
  • Ummm this looks f**king terrible! Looks good??? Ummm maybe if you're high and even then....that is questionable.
  • I'll check it out as a guilty pleasure, maybe download. I like Kristin Kreuk and I hope she gets some better roles down the line, her cameo in Euro Trip was funny and as a person she seems way more charismatic than her characters. But until then yeah its not too bad, not too good just middle of the line. Way better than Dragonball Z and technically speaking it's probably going to be a less dissapointment than Watchmen and Terminator 4 (I'm playing the expectation game here and I know some people are gonna be divided with those lol)
  • Alex
i think i saw Shan Tsung and Raiden ......Cool!
    btw trailer is okay.
  • I was half-expecting one of the characters to say "Finish Him! Flawless Victory!"
  • jason B
i was expecting this to be waaaaay worse. i'll root for this because of my undying love for smallville - i hope every single castmember has a bright future ahead of them.
  • Palmer
I hate Smallville (Last I check he still can't fly and they totally rejiggered is origins) and I think her acting is a little bit stiff. And even though it's not an Uwe Boll film I'm thinking it's going to flop more than a fish out of water, in the US at least.

i want to know how comes the 20th Century Fox intro does not appear in the begin of this trailer

the trailer is a hit and miss but i might see it i was more hype for this then the dragonall
  • The trailer really didn't look that good at all. I guess because I had no idea what's going on or who anybody is and didn't understand the language being spoken. I'm pretty sure that this film will do pretty bad at the Box Office. Something around the numbers of The Spirit.

Gay sex all over the place!
  • As I recall, the original characters' names were changed when they ported over the video game. I wonder how that will play out in Japan.
  • Kudos to the editor of this trailer. I bet it's the same guy that did the trailer for Medellin...
  • lol
  • Austin
Looks way too better than Dragon Ball...
  • Nothing in this trailer really stands out as "special." I dunno. I'll reserve judgement.
  • Aaron
I have to agree with a few of the other posters. Nothing AMAZING, but not a horrible waste of screen time. I'll probably see it in theaters.
  • Meh... it "looks kinda sorta" like a straight-to-video action/martial arts movie...
  • I'm not sold, Kristin Kreuk just doesn't look like a strong 'bad-ass' female lead to me, she looks, so...so innocent and soft, and the scene with Michael Clarke Duncan firing a rocket launcher (?) didn't look particularly good to me as well.
  • It looks like Fecal Matter with Sprinkles.
  • The original was on last night and yeah I watched it.
  • I am so downloading that movie
  • GetOverIt
That looks exactly like I thought it would look.....bad.

    To super_aj:

Theoretically, any story can be made into at least a 'half-decent' movie (in terms of doing justice to the source), but you're right that not all source material is worthy of being made into a feature film (the infamous Uwe Boll's choices shows that in spades). Street Fighter, though --however slight and shallow in some places-- has enough of a mythos within it (at least as it has been built up over time throughout the franchise) to make a pretty entertaining movie, if only the creators would stick to the original story enough to give fans that sense of satisfaction at a plot well covered, with at least general levels of accuracy. From this trailer, all I can hope for is just a vague feeling of "Jeepers, I've always wanted to see this or that move played out in live-action like that," which is frankly just not enough to make this flick worth making.

I've always been a staunch advocate of the notion that video game stories CAN make good movies, but only if they're given into the hands of people that respect the original enough to do it justice, and talented enough on their own creative merit to fill the areas that are weak, story or concept-wise, with quality padding, rather than filler that makes the already ridiculous aspects of the story even worse (ala the Super Mario Bros. movie...or the first Street Fighter movie, for that matter).

What part of this trailer looks Not-Terrible? I think it's awful, attempting to hide much by use of tons of cuts and very very short scenes.
  • I'm with most of the people here. This doesn't look that good really. The scene with the people flying in the air from the impact of the explosion was enough to make me laugh. I guess this is one of those films that's really for the video game fans. I don't know any of these characters, although I have played the game. I couldn't call them out in a line up. This film will fail.
  • joshmc
Meh, I'll wait for it to come out at Blockbuster.
  • Reason
    Meh... I'd fuck her...
  • guilty. pleasure. in fact, the more i watch this the better it gets. plus, kristen kreuk! it most definitely looks better than dragonball does, we may have a resident evil/tomb raider style franchise by the lloks of things. you'd think they'd change the logo though...
  • The look of it is good, but it doesn't look good. If that makes any sense :D Might have a couple of cool fights, but I'm pretty sure the overal movie will be bad... Not going to see this one + Kreuk is not 1% believable as the main character. Bummer.
  • Spooky
I'm not going to anticipate the movie no matter how good the trailers are. Because in middle of the movie Van Damme appears to give a shitty speech. Ain't havin that!
But I love the pronounciation of "Street Fighter" at the end of the trailer!
  • Streeta fighta!
  • Streeta fighta!

Also, this looks a lot better than the recent Dragonball trailer (for some reason I had to compare them).
  • eh. It looks better than I was expecting, I'm not particularly educated about the Street fighter mythos (if there is such a thing) But I don't think anyone can argue that it could be worse. (Van Dame's version is proof of that! Jet boots! Really!!!??) as long as I don't see that, I'll be satisfied. oh yeah! I forgot, I hate it when movies are made from the worst possible video games as source material. What kind of story does Street Fighter have? (tell me if you know) where is Bioshock? Where is Prince of Persia? Oh yeah...Donnie Darko...I forgot. Well why not Resistance? Come on guys! tell me what games you think would actually make for a Good feature film?
