In the next few weeks, quite a few bloggers will debate whether Liam Neeson gives Jason Bourne and James Bond a sharp chop to the throat in the fluid, under-the-radar actioner Taken. Today, FirstShowing.net swept away its weekly confetti and threw a fresh parade for the film in hopes of getting 20th Century Fox’s attention. Fox, that ever-maligned of studios, is essentially “dumping” Taken—which has been released everywhere except for America—in late January. So, what’s the verdict? I’m not sure if Neeson’s vigilant “preventer” could murder someone with, oh, a whisk, but the “real world” he inhabits would definitely make the PG-13 Bourne sob inside his 1,000th borrowed Audi.

Taken attempts to expose modern international sex rings like Paul Schrader’s memorable Hardcore did with the darker side of California’s porn economy in ‘79. Like with Hardcore, the audience gradually discovers a lawless, albeit much grander, subculture of greed, sex and death through the eyes of an accomplished actor most audiences see as morally upstanding (Neeson here, George C. Scott there). But Taken’s (accurate?) adrenaline-charged presentation of highest-bidder sin is even more effective IMO. Neeson’s character, an ex-American spy named Bryan Mills, is on such a lean, linear and kick-ass mission of shoot/stab/kill, that viewers are required to contemplate the potential for female enslavement in the world market at breakneck speed. Moreover, Mills’s implied covert past leads you to believe that he’s all-too-aware that this flush criminal labyrinth exists as he rushes through it: unsettling, and yet awesome.

The storyline itself is unremarkable: After years spent “serving his country” in secret, Mills retires back to the U.S. to span time with his estranged teenage daughter. As played by Maggie Grace (Lost), this all-American teen is even more clueless and innocent than Juliette Lewis’s in Cape Fear. When Mills reluctantly allows his daughter to leave the States for a “normal” tour of Paris with a rich girlfriend, she’s promptly kidnapped (this happenstance is admittedly Eli Rothian). Naturally, Mills must cross the Atlantic to find her, cell phone clock ticking, and he chooses not to contact the usual authorities and embassies (implied as totally worthless and possibly complicit). Once he touches down in France, Mills’s pursuit and pursuers never let up.

French director, Pierre Morel (the parkour showcase District B-13), and writer/producer, Luc Besson, seem set on making the United States look like a delusional safe haven. There’s plenty of ironic jingoistic humor in the movie, accented with un-subtle baguette placement, totes depraved dapper sheiks, and even a stars-and-bars virginal “pop diva.”

What Taken executes quite well is an exposition-free drop into a fast-paced world where diplomatic power, secrets, hush money and human traffic roam realistically unchecked. In the film, the black market has become more interconnected, profitable and thus bolder than ever, resulting in a winding, diverse body count and numerous inventive kills. Unlike the similar films of Bourne and Daniel Craig’s “realistic” Bond, there is no set villain or organizations. Neeson’s character is simply resigned to a highly corrupt world, and his taboo, U.S.-taught tactics counter it so relentlessly that you often laugh and go, “Umm, Bourne probably wouldn’t have done that…that was kind of fucked…” If you are expecting Neeson to show his age like Harrison Ford, it’s the complete opposite: somehow, this guy could kick Mark Wahlberg and Matt Damon’s ass.

Unfortunately, Taken hits a rough patch when landing its ending atop Mills’s brutal and family-centric worldview i.e. I see evil people everywhere, and while I love my daughter and ex-wife, they are idiots. (No spoilers ahead.) And in the last third, some of the action enters the “oh c’mon” Die Hard 3 realm of believability, while the creative license taken with a photo kiosk will cause quibbles amongst nerds.

Otherwise, this is a showcase for a great actor to play the rare intelligent, original action hero in a fun, politically incorrect movie…that just so happens to tackle the illegal sex trade in illuminating fashion. (Re: yes, it’s several steps above The Cowboy Way!) Taken does indeed merit a much stronger push by Fox and even consideration as a new action franchise. You get the sense that Neeson’s character could stand in LaGuardia for less than an hour and discover an urgent mission for a sequel that’s ahead of today’s headlines. If not, just leave his 17-year-old daughter alone on a playground with an iPod. Unlike Morel and Besson’s upcoming From Paris with Love, evidently starring John Travolta as a bloated Zangief doppelganger undergoing chemo, Taken 2 needs to happen. Of course, it likely won’t because Neeson’s character doesn’t wear a mask and have X-ray vision. The movie marketplace can be nearly as grim.

7.5/10

it's a truly disgusting world that taken exists in, and sadly it does resemble our real life. i'd have to watch it again before i could decide between neeson & bourne, but i will say that you root for every single punch and violent act of vengence that neeson dishes out.

i found myself gritting my teeth in excitement during one particular torture scene, where neeson gets the info he needs to wreck havock across europe (paris, right?). the creeps in this film are the worst kind of pedophile scumbags out there, and the calm demeanor that liam keeps while kicking the holy fuck out of them is uber-cool.

with a better script, this character could be huge - waaaaaaaaaaaaay better than the transporter's/statham's 'frank'...

however, HANDS DOWN, chev chelios would eat all of them (frank, bourne, bond, etc.) alive! in fact, chev would get enough badass revenge in one scene, what it takes these guys a whole movie to finish, with enough time to bang eve on the pitchers mound, opening day at the oakland colesium. so bring me taken 2, just not until after crank 2: high voltage!!!! (i know, weird tangent - i'm sorry i am dying to see chev again)

I'm from Argentina. I have seen in the theather and really kick-ass. Is an action movie, no Oscar worthy of course but was very fun and the acting of the great Liam Neeson was f@cking awesome. The action, especially the fights ala Bourne, were incredibles, also the shootings were really god The bad: in the first chase sequence, the camera was too confusing in some points but no always. Maggie Grace is cute, hot, etc but her character go full retard sometimes.
    8.5/10

I like Liam Neeson in general so I'm probably biased.
I really liked this movie, although it doesn't break any new ground story wise, it is a very entertaining story of a mans love for his daughter and the always awesome RETRIBUTION.

Btw, fuck the Bourne movies, you don't need 5 cameras to shoot an action scene and then 3 editors to splice the footage into a seizure inducing pile of crap to make it "cool".
  • Hunter Stephenson, that's a good review, but I have one question for you:
    Who was driving the boat?
  • Brian
    LOL
    "Who was driving the boat?"

Just about an hour ago I was asking that same question....and 5 months ago when I saw the film for the first time I was thinking it then too.

The way I think of it is that when he heard gunfire he just said oshi...and hid in the cabin and just thought no way in hell I'm going out there.
Either that or dropped anchor and bailed....that's what I probably would have done.

Ugh, god I hope not. The last two-thirds was bad ass, but the premise was 100% RE-DONCULOUS.

"I don't want you to go to Paris. The world is sooo dangerous."

"I want to go to Paris!"

"You're going to get kidnapped or something."

    "I hate you daddy!"

"Fiiiine, but take this cell phone so you can call me every single day so I know you haven't been kidnapped. That's a practical request, right?"

    "Daddy I'm being kidnapped!"

    "I'll find you kidnapper!"

*cringe* But in its defense, I've been to 24 countries throughout Europe, Asia and Latin America and the closest I got to trouble was in France, when some punk tried to pick my pocket... and failed.

Liam Neeson was still an entertaining ass kicker for the remainder of a movie, but his investigative "skills" were a bit questionable. For one, when he tried to pose as the corrupt French cop he didn't even try to fake a French accent. That wasn't the least bit suspicious to the kidnappers? Please.
  • to square
but as reviewer states above, taken's premise is a joke on american sentiment and how americans view the outside world. do you not agree? i think this is why it was not released in america for so long?
  • Square
Ya but the film didn't really have the depth and epic bravado to justify that kind of debate. Unless they can bring him back with a WAY bigger budget and a far more detailed and careful premise, which won't happen, I'd hate to see this character live on in mediocrity.

I'd maybe give this a 5.5 or a 6 out of 10. Decent action flick the first time, not worth watching a second time.
  • Brian
All valid points, but you must remember...it's a movie.
I'm a huge fan of Neeson and couldn't me more amazed at him playing this role, it's just the f***ing awesomeness to infinite and beyond.
The film does get a bit farfetched in SOME of the situations that result in him getting closer, but it's not that far off from what those people are capable of if they go "off the record" or stop doing things by the book.
The character of Brian had many years to home his skills and has probably seen plenty of this kind of situation and therefore knows what to do and when. Little ways he gets to know who people are...gets to see their faces, hear their dialect and voice, and track them down is awesome on every level and I'd say about 90% possible.
Sure in real life it might not go so smoothly every time you tried it, but it could work.

But when it comes down to it.....it's a movie, it has to be entertaining.....and man oh man was it ever.
Not trying to put down your points of anything, just opening up to the topic a bit.

Neeson is the man on so many levels.
  • 'Taken' was a great surprise when I was expecting nothing more than some straight-to-DVD action. Neeson is definitely the ass-kicking heart and soul of the movie, and I hadn't thought about a potential sequel, but I agree it's a fantastic idea.

One thing though, you say the final third is where it begins to lack credibility... I'd say that happens as soon as Neeson lands in Paris.

Regardless, it needs and deserves more attention. 'Taken' is exponentially more entertaining, interesting, and engaging than 'Wanted' or 'Eagle Eye' but will probably make less than a hundredth of their box-office.
  • Glad to see a more down to earth review of this movie... all the ones I had seen before were saying that Taken is the most awesome movie EVAR... 7.5 is a perfect score
  • Rick
Feels in parts like an update on 'Frantic' with 'Bourne' elements... And i love Frantic. Great stuff.
  • DavidChenFanClub
Hunter Stevensen, Nice effort. But that review sucked. At least you don't say "like" every five minutes like you do on the /filmcast.
  • Dac
    Over the top, yet electrifying.

Yes, I want more taken please. :)
  • Kokushi
Taken was facking awesome, 8/10, liam neeson was great, if he was younger he could easily be the new Bond (DC is awesome as Bond), the action scenes were raw and intense, but overall one of my favorite action movies of 2008.
  • Same thoughts. I though it was badass but not on the same level, intelligence wise, as the Bourne Films. Billington tends to hype things up to an egregious level.
  • adamluo
I guess the cold, hard reality of guards missing a retired 50+ year old "preventer" from point blank range with automatic weapons is just too much for little Jason Bourne to handle? Come on.
  • I'll say this: I really dug this film. More so than Bourne and I thought Bourne was pretty tight. The reason why was that the motivation gave more drive to the film and was more universal. Instead of escaping CIA the premise was simple enough to tag on whatever the hell you wanted regardless of how cheesy or irrational it may or may not seem. I was surprised by Liam I have to say. I didn't expect him to be so hardcore in this one. I was impressed.
  • HLT
Surprised at how engaging the movie was even with the predictable plot. Hybrid of Jason Borne's wit and Jack Bauer's crazinest. Badass character by a great actor.
  • The trailer is very exciting.
  • Mike
Im yet to see this movie but ive heard nothing but good about it, one friend of mine even saying that this movie was perfect like a diamond (haha)... Also being a movie theatre manager ive heard alot of "buzz" from guests about film due to the really well put together trailer.
  • lukebyte
Taken was entertaining-it doesn't reinvent the wheel or anything but not everything has to...
  • clever name
    one of the best movies.

    ever.

    i jizzed in my pants.
  • Liam is very very good! This movie took me by surprise, the story - yes, but Liam is so hardcore and the solutions/choices he takes during this movie is what makes TAKEN so good. No Bullshit, No monolouging, No "bad guy speeches" - directly to the solution, very refreshing! Please, someone distribute this to the masses!

See this one - or buy the HD version!
  • I've watched it four times and it's just like Fox to ruin a great opportunity like a "Taken" franchise....Pierre Morel is such a talented new director and should stay on with a sequel...just because Luc Besson is involved don't think it's anything like the horrible Transporter films...it's a solid European action flick...somewhere between Ronin and Bourne...I'd really like to see Neeson return he was such unexpected badass in this movie...
  • Taken was one of my favorite movies of the year, it wasn't perfect (plot holes etc) but seeing Liam nail a role like that was a pure joy to watch. It's a high adrenaline, action movie with a (slight) conscience.
  • I think most everyone here agrees that Liam pulled it off quite well in this film. My buddy told me about this film and hyped it pretty good. It's usually not my kind of movie, so I almost passed on it. I decided to brave it after all. The first 20 minutes had me cringing pretty bad (i.e., boring to the max). But, once he gets to Paris, it's on!! I liked the fact that it was a "are you involved?...then your dead" kind of flick. Not pussy footing around hurting those involved. Liam was a total bad ass in this film, and has me wanting to see him in another role like this.

I hope they release this. I would definitely get my friends to check this out. I guarantee it would do well.
  • FUCK YEAH. finally , this movie is getting some exposure. its one of my favorite movie of the year. i have been recommending all my friends to watch it. please watch this movie if you haven't watched it yet. its really fucking awesome
  • Bnitro
Liam Neeson is sick in this movie, but it has a straight to dvd feel. Good review.
  • Taken is one of my all time favorite films.
  • hunter / slashfilm
    jonny, too much eggnog much?

btw: i hope you freeze, you canadian fuck.
  • Anti-Septic
I enjoyed the hell out of this film, another violent film from Luc Besson how can it fail? The plot was a bit predictable, but it still is a worthwhile movie to watch, just really dug the fast paced action and some of the fight scenes were really well thout out as well. I could explain further but dont wanna add any spoilers.

    See the movie now!
  • Brian
It's Ironic...I saw this movie about 5 months ago and then watched it again tonight on DVD...All I can say is this:
Liam Neeson is the ULTIMATE BADASS!
Being a huge fan of Neeson's incredible talent as an actor....to see him play the ultimate action hero that just pwns the bad guys left right and center gets me all riled up.
I can honestly say that given the fact that I am a fan of his....seeing him in this role was the perfect...absolute PERFECT thing to happen to film.
This in my opinion is better than the Bourne series....come on, let's look at this....Matt Damon vs. Liam Neeson, it's a no brainer, Neeson is the man!

You can't disagree...there's something about seeing Neeson play the action hero that is just simply amazing on all parts.
  • Brian
It's just unfortunate that us in North America don't get the film until 11 months after it was released. They really need to work on this European film release stuff, especially with an insanely amazing actor playing the ultimate badass hero and AHH just love it so much.
  • I loved Taken. It has its flaws, but no movie is perfect. It kept me entertained, didn't bother with too much spoon-feeding (note how it never clarifies what kind of spy Neeson was - he might have been a black ops cleaner for all we know), didn't dabble in cliches, didn't get windey (it wasted little time in establishing the ex-wife, her husband and the daughter's girlfriend) and smoothly moved from bad guy to bad guy without establishing an overarching villain first. Best of all, Neeson is 100% believable badass.

Hell, I let the last part of the movie slide. Who cares if it went over the top? Think back to the cult-classic Leon. One man taking out a small army of SWAT troopers? Gary Oldman happening to be hiding downstairs? It made no sense at all! But who cares? It's one of the finest endings in a film yet. I love it when film makers subtly suspend reality.

If there is one tragedy of this release, it's led me to disregard movie reviewers even more. Some of the stuff written about the movie is such up-own-ass dribble that I wonder if most reviewers just generally hate films and all cuddle their copies of Citizen Kane at night.

    10/10 in my opinion.
  • rayofthejungle
I enjoyed the film despite it being predictable. I kept waiting for Liam's face to melt off though.
  • Mike Lowther
Saw a screening of this months ago. Great action, yet Neeson kept using his Jedi mind tricks to escape trouble. While watching, I could have seen an actor less talented playing this part, (ehem, Colin Farrell). I just feel Liam was underrated for this part. For what it's worth, I didn't feel robbed; it was a free screening.
  • someone
i hear Liam ,Famke,Maggie and Xander are all signed for a sequel too so hope it happens...With Famke Janssen in a larger role
  • I enjoyed 'Taken', the plot was pretty thin and simplistic and the dialogue snappy, but what really made this film was Liam Neeson pretty much killing every resident in Paris with his bare-hands (and sometimes he used a gun...). Also the film had a human feel with the story-arch of a father doing everything he can to save his daughter from a life of hell. But was mainly nice to see a real 'manly' film with constant, non-stop, brutal violence.
  • special_ops
what an earth are you thinking. Taken was undoubtedly one of the worst films of this year. The plot was appalling and the action sequences were seriously lacklustre, especially compared to some of the films that have been released this year. Have a look at the Empire review and you will see possibly the most scathing review i have ever read. I would seriously discourage anyone from seeing this film, even as a dvd rental.
  • My friend has nothing but positive things to say about the movie and when I first saw the trailer I was pretty intrigued. Not much of a fan of Liam Neeson's dead-pan acting, but he can certainly carry a movie.
  • Costantinos Sozou
I watched Taken a couple of days ago and it actually isn't bad at all. It could do well at the U.S box office. All it needs is some good marketing...
  • Having just seen Taken, I can say that you should not fuck around with Liam Neeson. People should also know that's it from Luc Besson who we can thank for the Transporter films and Leon. It's a good, but not great film that is worth your time more than a lot of bigger, flashier action pics out there.
  • depa
Very effective movie, the joke on the American view on the rest of the world is pretty obvious. 8/10
  • Seriously a capital A
  • Wow that didn't work at all, I guess I overloaded /film, that's okay though, Taken really is AWESOME WITH A CAPITAL A
  • diggers
A truely wonderful movie, one of the best i've seen this year. And most action/thrillers make that list. The characters where tight and believable, the plot was compelling and not clichéd, it had brutality, sensitivity, high excitement and depth. Not just an action flick, in the mould of die hard (a movie i love, but after the Bourne trilogy and this seems to lack depth, probably Bruce Willis' over the top cheesy performance and crappy one liners, but the big movie studios love that) or a Steven seagal flick, but a beautiful film about deep regret and the nasty world we all live in.
  • Taken is a cross between Kiss of the Dragon (Jet Li), Bourne Identity (Matt Damon) and Ransom (Mel Gibson)
