Slamdance: Spooner Movie Trailer

If you’ve been reading /Film for a while, then you know that I’m a sucker for coming of age films and quirky indie relationship dramedies (how 2004 of me, I know…), . Drake DoremusSpooner, which premieres at the 2009 Slamdance Film Festival, falls into category two. Matthew Lillard plays a used car salesman named Herman Spooner, who still lives at home with his parents. The official plot synopsis follows:

“Spooner is fairly set in his unfulfilling routine, but turning 30 marks a hard deadline set by his mom (Kate Burton) and dad (Christopher McDonald) to get a place of his own. To top it off, Spooner’s boss (Shea Whigham) is putting on the pressure to bring in some numbers, or face the chopping block. Headed for one of the worst days of his life, Spooner meets the girl of his dreams, Rose (Nora Zehetner). Forgoing all other priorities, Spooner is now working on winning her heart, but on their perfect date, she breaks the news that she is about to leave for the Philippines.”

The film festival promotional trailer is embedded after the jump.

Thanks to /Film Reader Oscar E for the tip.

    Looks interesting.
Does anybody know the name of song/artist use in this trailer?

"Oh Mandy" by The Spinto Band

I may be drawing a bit of a tangent but here's the awesome music video (directed by waverlyfilms):

  • I love Matthew Lillard, it's nice to see him in an indie role again... (i assume it's an indie film, right?)
  • Tomás Roa
    Interesting. I'll probably see it.
Ps. The first song is "Lost in the Zoo" by Goddman Electric Bill :)
  • There are so many of these...
  • That actually looks good. I love Lillard, so glad to see him in something better than "In the Name of the King" again. Makes me want to go back and watch SLC Punk again.
  • He was in that shit storm of a movie. This movie looks great.
  • Definitely looks indie, as stated before. At the glance of the plot synopsis, I would have passed on this pretty quick. After seeing the trailer, I would give it a shot. And I also agree that Lillard looks a little half-retarded in his role. But, I guess that's part of the charm for him?
  • yeah, but there's something sweet and adorable about his character. I'd rather date him than date a douche-bag like, let's say, the vampire guy from TWILIGHT or that Zack guy from High School Musical.
  • Agreed. There is usually something about a guy who is a bit depressed and sluggish in his life. Garden State, Dan in Real Life, etc. It's that underdog feel they give to the characters. I mean if Buddy the Elf can get a hottie and have babies, then I guess Spooner can too. :)
  • not to mention that Spooner is cute, too. I could never date a guy who's just plain ugly, like Vince Vaugn.
  • i knew Nora Zehetner looked familiar.... after a quick imdb search, found out she was in heroes season 2. she played a bad guy, if i remember correctly. anyone else?
  • Matt
She plays a major bitch in Brick, which I highly recommend.

i'm a sucker for these films too, and for this kinda film it looks perfect. what bums me out, is that intelligent honest films like this get such limited marketing/exposure/theater releases...yet the spirit & seven pounds get all the attention in the world.

Looks cute, but like it might be trying too hard to be the next indie darling movie (Garden State, Little Miss Sunshine...)
  • Looks cute...I'd def watch it with someone...

I remember how infatuated I was by the considerable charm of Scooby-doo, but how upset I was to realize that Lilard's perfomance was terrible. Here we are now, with Lilard making the one-of-a-kind comeback I was literally praying for. Childhood mishappenings, thou hath been avenged, biatch!
  • Matt
Couple things: Are Christopher McDonald and Matthew Lillard BFFs? He played his dad in SLC Punk, too. Which was also a coming-of-age flick....
Glad to see this Nora girl isn't dropping off the face of the world, I enjoyed her in Brick and the now-should-be-aborted Heroes.
  • I'm not too sure about the movie, in this trailer it comes off as trying a bit too hard to be lovably off kilter and cute, but I've always thought Matthew Lillard had the potential to be a great director and even if this movie disappoints, maybe it'll lead to him getting more roles in non-Freddie Prinze Jr. movies.
  • looks really sweet and genuine. :)
  • The plot synopsis makes me not want to see the film because it sounds like its been done before. However, the trailer makes me want to know more about this film and possibly watch it when it comes out.
  • Joe B.
I really dig these movies lately. Nice to see the father and son team up of Lillard and McDonald again. And that Nora is totally boss. I'll be keeping my eye on this.
  • This looks indie as shit. I'd see it.
  • Thanks Peter. Lillard's acting looked at little... odd, unless Spooner's a bit slow or something. And it does look a tad generic, but nevertheless interesting.
  • Yeah, looks a little generic to me, and Lillard doesn't make it any better. It just looks like another Juno-inspired, cutesy, inde comedy: predictable and starting to wear thin.
  • whatever.
  • youarewelcome
it was made before juno came out.
  • This doesn't look like it's been shot on film... any thoughts?
  • brokefilmstudent
Matthew Lillard showed this at an advance screening when he did a Q and A session at Vancouver Film School. It's a really good film with many funny parts in it. Definitely worth checking out if you get the chance.
  • Looks lovely.
