Since summer/fall, rumors have persisted that Arnold Schwarzeneggar will appear in Terminator Salvation in some form. Fan site The Arnold Fans (via moviehole) recently spoke with the governor himself about these possibilities. When asked about whether or not he would appear in T4, the site had this to say:

Governor Arnold, perhaps under restraints by McG and the film studio, answers only with the body language and a smile of “You never know.” Should we take that as a yes? The tease was promising but it’s too soon to get an official answer.

This non-denial seems to corroborate previous stories about how McG is trying to use technology to digitally graft Arnold’s face onto the T800 in the film.

I’m typically not the type of person that sees much value in these sorts of cameos. I’m a Trek fan and although it warmed my heart  that Leonard Nimoy would be making in appearance in JJ Abram’s new film, I wasn’t terribly elated about it. I think that when you’re taking a series in a whole new direction, you might as well focus on new and exciting story/characters, rather than being tied to the old.

That being said, I would actually push for an Arnold appearance in the new Terminator film. The Terminator is one of the films that made Schwarzeneggar’s career, and it’s what he became synonymous with in the 1990s. It feels like for the huge directional shift they are taking for this franchise, a Schwarzennegar cameo would help to tie everything together. However, if the technology they are trying to use isn’t completely seamless (and according to reports, it might not be there yet), it has the potential to be something that dramatically detracts from the film, rather than adds to it.

I'd love to see Arnold back as the killer machine again for one last time even though he's old, has already played the terminator *and his creator* in the decent 3rd movie, and the Sarah conner show has proven terminator can be done well without Arnold's inclusion. I guess if Indy, Rambo, and Rocky can come back for one last round, so can the best tough guy actor ever.

Dave you're really bugging with the "I’m typically not the type of person that sees much value in these sorts of cameos."

Arnie has to be in it to tie both series together. If not in 4 then def part 5. They will probably show him in the future where they got his likeness from and bam, he's on the product line.
  • I really hope he decides to do the cameo. It wouldn't be a terminator film without it.
  • Agree...When I think of Terminator I either think of the teenage boy who sounds like a girl, Skeleton robots, or Arnold Schwarzenegger...
  • Exactly! As stated in the article, it really would help tie everything together as they get ready to 'reboot' this franchise in a new direction.
  • Totally agree, I have many friends who love every Arnie movie (even the bad ones) just because he's in it. This would be a great way to bridge people from the "old" Terminator to the new one.

I've talked with some sources inside the "Biz" and they have told me that Arnolds apperance in T3 when he arrives in the Time Sphere, its the exact same scene from T2, they just reversed the angle and did a few other optical tricks.

Hmmm let's see, "South Park," cheap paper cut-outs. "Terminator," state of the art CGI. Great comparison.
  • I think you're missing the point, I was talking about bad CGI. As stated in David Chen's article there have been reports that the technology might not be quite there yet. If the technology is up to the task, then that's great for fans of the series. If the technology is not up to par, then that scene is going to be seen as extremely cheap and poorly done.
  • I would love to see Arnold in the movie. It might look lame, but I really wouldn't care either way! haha
  • Burt
Like the cheesy CGI cat attack in "Let the Right One In."
  • It worked for Christopher Lee's fight scenes in Attack of the Clones, though it did seem a little unnatural.
  • I think the best cameo he could do would be as the human person that the T-800 is modeled on. Wouldn't that be more interesting??
  • That's a lot more tangible than a CGI governor. The only thing is that I think it'd require a bit too much of an explanation as to why he's a human and not a machine. Still, I think that'd make more sense than just a machine who surfaces in the movie. Then again, it could be one of those final scenes where John Connor sends him back in time to protect him during the events of T2.
  • It's kinda like the first big-screen Hulk movie (the Ang Lee one). The technology wasn't really there yet, and it detracted from the movie. Hopefully, they'll be cautious about using this CGI tech and make sure it looks right.

or as the robot skeleton with arnolds voice.
  • miguelvasquez
i think it would be pretty cool to see him in the movie. but if he's in it or not, i can't wait for this movie.
  • filmkid
i feel Arnold Schwarzeneggar should come on the 5th or 6th film of Terminator Salvation
  • I love cameos like this
  • Joe
Even just a shot of his face, when the first T-800 boots up. Its eyes opening or something. A little could go a long way.
  • J.D.
I agree. Subtly is key. BUT, remember that John Connor supposedly dies after being killed by Arnold, as explained in part 3.

    @good point Joe.!!!
    ^
@J.D. , you never know they could show that model getting programmed to tell John and Kate that he killed John. Or even have that model getting sent back so quickly that I malfunctioned.
All I'm saying is that there's ways out of the T3 final for Connor.
  • That motherf*cker better get to work running the state that elected him state. Unless he's going to use the money towards the state budget.
  • state.
  • I cannot wait for this film... with or without The Governator.
  • I have a bad feeling about a digital Arnold superimposed onto another body. For some reason all I can think about is on a South Park episode where they'll have a celebrity (Mel Gibson) and then use a cut out for the face. I love it on South Park, I'd hate in Terminator Salvation.
  • Arnie created one of the most memorable characters from two of the most memorable films of all-time in my opinion, so I hope to high-hell he's got a cameo in the new 'Salvation' film, if not to please the fans, but to make us forget slightly about the fact he took part in the awful 'T3'.
  • I'll be surprised if he is not in the film.
  • south texas terror
worst Arnold cameo ever : The Rundown
  • Max
actually that would be Around the World in 80 Days
  • yeah like 2 seconds telling rock"have fun!" it was supposed to be something like passing the torch!
  • Sean
Uh... Hello? It might not be a digital grafting but rather something akin to what they did in Xmen 3. Sir Ian McKellan and Patrick Stewart were given digital facelifts based on source photos and motion pictures that were taken 20+ years ago. That was just probably the most amazing digital effect in the entire movie because it was done so well. That movie is now several years old so the technology has been developed even further. Perhaps we will see the face of Arnold from the original Terminator which would make more sense than seeing the face of Arnold some 20+ years later.
