James Newton Howard To Score The Last Airbender

M Night Shyamalan has found himself under attack for the casting choices in the upcoming big screen live action adaptation of Avatar, titled The Last Airbender (almost 500 angry comments on our previous news story). I have a big of good news for Avatar fans: The Gorfaine-Schwartz Agency has confirmed that seven-time Academy Award-nominated composer James Newton Howard has signed on to compose the film’s score. Airbender will be the seventh collaboration between Howard and Shyamalan. Howard most recently received acclaim for his work with Hans Zimmer on The Dark Knight.

  • James Newton Howard and Hans Zimmer are God's in my eyes. The Dark Knight score is amazing.
  • Fantastic news. Besides the story I've thought the sound in Avatar was its best quality.

I think "under attack" is an understatement with the reaction Shyamalan and Paramount has gotten. I still think Shyamalan doesn't have much control. This is definitely a Paramount's film.

Anyway, I've loved Howard's work in the past and the score used on the show is great one. It really helped with the show's epic storytelling. I hope they use some of it and it would be great to hear some new ones. Here's an example if anyone wants to hear...

    look! nice! really nice!!

Good. It's a step in the right direction, being able to score Howard again. I just want to go to the movies and say that i honestly liked a Shyamalan film. It's been far too long.
  • Still not convinced to see the flick. Will pick up the soundtrack maybe.
  • Matt
That's good news but it doesn't change the fact that M Night Shyamalan is still directing and Jesse McCarthy as Zuko. WHY?
  • Shad
yeah...how do I put this nicely

fuck this racist, ill conceived piece of shit movie, I don't care who's doing the score

and I mean that in the nicest, most positive way imaginable, but seriously, this "movie" is the ultimate example of Hollywood-bullshit-fuckery and the reason I barely ever go to the theater anymore. (not THIS specific movie, but the kind of over focused-grouped cash grabbing bullshit thought process it represents)

    I fully agree.
  • +1
  • I absolutely agree. 1000%.

I'm sorry but why not just hire "The Track Team" again. They made all the music with a limited budget for the cartoon and it was still amazing. Even being mostly digital computer synth made it was very soulful with only a few seconds here or there that it would get that noticeable artificial digital music sound when the computer can't get woodwinds just right. If they hand the funding behind them that a full motion picture gives for the sound track I'm sure they could get a full orchestra to produce some amazing music.
  • Nebby
+1 for The Track Team! It doesn't matter how good this guy is.
  • At least the score will be good.
  • My thoughts exactly.

No surprise, Shyamalan has been working with James Newton Howard for 4 or 5 Movies already,
  • Sounds good to me. He's the best composer out there...maybe he can save this probable dreck. Scratch that, hasn't worked for the last 3...
  • the last three what? He's done all of the M Night Shyamalan scores
  • JakePT
Exactly, and he didn't save them.
  • The Village is a great film and Howard's best score.
  • As Jake said, obviously he's done 'em all...but the last three have been a mess anyway. PowerfulDog, I'll give you The Village is his best Shymalan score, but I'll disagree that the film's terrible.
  • I'm not a fan of the show (only because I haven't seen it yet) but I think this is great news. While Shyamalan's films have decreased in quality, Howards scores have been very consistent (although I think he struggled to find inspiration for The Happening, and you cant blame him).
His work on Signs and The Village was very very good, strongly themed music. I'm sure he'll deliver a worthwhile score.

The series always had a good score to it, especially the music juxtaposed with fight sequences. It will be important to maintain a similar feel to the cartoon, but it might be tweaked a bit to correspond better with the live action. Overall, high hopes.
  • I love this guy. As Shyamalan's style is wonderfully Hitchcockian, Howard's scores are just as Herrmanian in the best ways.
  • I totally agree, especially the Signs score, so cool.
  • i feel like i'm being told speilberg will be reuniting with john williams - it's just a given, right? i ASSUMED jnh would be scoring this, doesn't make shyamalan's all-white casting any less infuriating, that's all i'll be able to think about with every bit of news that comes out about this movie...
  • Lencho01
Agreed. It was expected that he'd be doing the score. And the film may sound great on a technical level, but with the cast you lose some of your excitement for it. Oh, well.
  • Not_buying_it
Exactly. How does this make anything better about the casting? Oh, it doesn't. The casting is still biased and offensive.
  • This at least tells me that regardless of the quality of the film, at least we will get some good music out of it. Of course, I said that about The Happening, so I guess Newton-Howard isn't infallible.
  • Seth
M Night Shyamalan is heading towards Gus Van Sant terrority. He's gonna have to take a humbling step back, do some commercial films as a director for hire with a lot less control.

    It worked for Van Sant.
  • Sozin
They should have hired Yoko Kanno to do the score... Oh wait he is asian, nevermind.
  • One thing right. Man, I hope this is not a cheese ball film. I mean, the show itself is kind of cheese ball, but in a good way, not in the way M. Night Shyamalan could cheese ball it. I hope all the best for it though.
  • Water and Fire=Peace
Dont worry it will be a chessy movie!!!! juat wait and c !!!!!
  • HahahahaHa...
No amount of good music will save this movie. The Last Air Bender would be such a bad ass movie, just like dragon ball would be such a bad ass film. But no matter how many effects and sounds you put in this, there will be no difference. You can put bells and whistles on shit and throw it down a hallway, it will sound pretty but it will still smell and look like shit.

The "Last Air Bender", "Hitman", "Dragon Ball", all these films should be testaments to the studio executives too stop rushing into projects and green-lighting movies to terrible directors with even worse track records.

M.Night is going to kill, absolutely destroy this franchise. Just like Bryan Singer killed Superman. They will spend millions to make a terrible film. Have we seen M.Night do action yet? No. I've only seen him try and push a twist into the end of every movie. No offense to Unbreakable or The Sixth Sense. Those movies were awesome. I just think Shamalyan needs to stop writing his scripts. Just direct. I think visually he has a good sense to him, it's just his writing, story telling.... is stale like 8 month old milk... chunky and leaves a shitty taste in your mouth.
  • FuFu CuddlyPoops
"I think visually he has a good sense to him"
Well, visually he is seeing all the leading roles as white characters.
  • Blue
U r so right!!!! The movie is goin 2 suck!!!!
  • Dani G
I'm bummed that they aren't bringing the Track Team to do the movie score! Their work on the show was phenomenal! However, James Newton Howard is a genius. I love his work. When it comes to the casting for this film, I'm apprehensive about Zukartney, but the rest of the cast I can deal with. I don't have an opinion of Noah Ringer because I have yet to see a picture. I'm wondering what Mike and Bryan are thinking of all of this!
  • Blue
No matter how great the music is the actors suck! And if they suck everything else will to!!!
  • CubbyBunny152
They shouuld've hired at least on person with color!!!! But no the movie is now screwed!! So whenever ppl think of The Avatar:The Last Airbender, they'LL THINK OF THE WORSE MOVIE IN HISTORY!!!!!!!
  • Elizabeth
So? Big deal. They're probably going to make the soundtrack sound whitewashed Asian anyway, since they've already told all of us that they don't care at all about staying true to Asian/Inuit cultures by casting white actors to play Asian/Inuit characters.
